4c Date:

Aim: To determine co-ordinates of ground points using Global Positioning System and preparing
map using any Geographic Information System (GIS) / GPS software.

Procedure: To capture coordinates of ground locations using GPS and prepare a map, follow
these general steps:

1. Equipment and Software:

A reliable GPS device capable of capturing accurate coordinates.

Computer with mapping software installed, such as Google Earth Pro or GIS (Geographic
Information System) software like Quantum GIS (QGIS) or any GPS software.

2. Determine Your Objectives:

Decide the purpose of creating the map and the specific ground locations to be captured.

Define the area to be covered and the level of detail required.

3. Familiarize Yourself with GPS Device:

Read the user manual and understand the features and functionality of the GPS device.

Ensure the device is properly charged and configured before starting.

4. Set Up GPS Device:

Turn on the GPS device and allow it to acquire satellite signals.

Set the GPS device to the desired coordinate system and datum (e.g., WGS84).

Configure any additional settings, such as logging frequency or accuracy requirements.

5. Capture Ground Coordinates:

Visit the first ground location to be captured.

Wait for the GPS device to stabilize and display accurate coordinates.

Record the latitude and longitude coordinates displayed on the GPS device for that location.

Repeat this process for each ground location to be captured.

6. Transfer GPS Data to Computer:

1
Connect the GPS device to the computer using the appropriate cable or wireless connection.

Use the software provided with the GPS device to transfer the captured coordinates to the
computer. Ensure the data is saved in a compatible format, such as GPX or CSV.

7. Import GPS Data into Mapping Software:

Open the mapping software on your computer.

Import the GPS data file containing the captured coordinates into the mapping

software. Check the imported data for accuracy and adjust any necessary settings.

8. Create and Customize the Map:

Use the mapping software's tools and features to create and customize your map.

Add any additional layers or data you want to include, such as labels, symbols, or other
relevant information.

Adjust the map's scale, orientation, and layout according to your requirements.

9. Save and Export the Map:

Save your map project file in the native format of your mapping software.

Export the map as a file format suitable for your needs, such as PDF, JPEG, or PNG.

Choose the appropriate resolution and settings for the exported map file.

10. Review and Verify the Map:

Carefully review the map to ensure all ground locations are accurately represented.

Verify that the map meets your objectives and requirements.

Make any necessary adjustments or edits before finalizing the map.

Conclusion :-

We have successfully captured the Co- ordinate points from Bhavan’s Campus in GNSS app and
with help of excel (.csv) file imported in Google earth and prepared map out of it. It can be used for
generation of maps for the points which co ordinates are known to us.
