Update Proposal Salam 30.10.2019

The document outlines the proposal for a student's master's thesis project on designing, fabricating, and analyzing the performance of a model hydraulic turbine. The objectives are to select the optimal blade width and shape through experimentation. The methodology will involve constructing a water channel, designing a model turbine with adjustable blades, and measuring performance metrics like speed, power, and pressure.

7. Tentative Title: DESIGN, FABRICATION AND PERFORMANCE STUDY OF A MODEL

HYDRAULIC TURBINE.

8. Background and present state of the problem:

Hydroelectric is one of the most mature renewable forms of energy, providing about 20% of the world’s
electricity consumption [1]. Hydro-power is considered as one of the most desirable source of electrical
energy as it is environmental friendly. In recent years there is increasing research in the field of small
hydro-electric power plants. Several types of small hydropower turbines include radial, axial, and
propeller type turbines. There are many sites which are suitable for low head hydro turbines [2]. As
Bangladesh is an under-developed country in the third world. So power and energy is must for the
development of our country. The most common method of producing electricity in Bangladesh is with
using gas. But with the scarcity of gas, fuel and the high price of them, it is now important to think
another alternative way of producing electricity. The alternative way is using renewable energy like
hydropower, as after all Bangladesh is a land of river. A huge amount of energy is wasted throughout the
world in river and stream flows with low head. In Bangladesh most of the potential sites for hydro power
have low head [3]. Hydraulic or water Turbines are the machines which use the energy of water
(hydropower) and convert it into mechanical energy. In general a water turbine consists of a wheel called
runner (or) rotor, having a number of specially designed vanes or blades or buckets. The water processing
a large amount of hydraulic energy when strikes the runner, it does work on the runner and causes it to
rotate. The mechanical energy so developed is supplied to the generator coupled to the runner, which then
generates electrical energy. The selection of the best turbine for any Particular hydro site depends upon
the site characteristics, the dominant ones being the head and flow available. Selection also depends on
the desired running speed of the generator or other device loading the turbine [4]. This project will be
positive impact on hydropower system in Bangladesh and then comes to a solution that what is the
prospect and possibility of hydropower in country.

9. Objectives with specific aims and possible outcome:
Objective(s):

1. The primary goals of this project are to select and identify the optimum blade width and shape of
the model water turbine.

2. Development/modification and Performance analysis of the model water turbine.

Possible outcome:
After successful implementation of this project, the model water turbine will be used in the Hydraulics
Lab to provide the Polytechnic students with an opportunity to acquire knowledge and skill in the area of
Power Plant engineering and Fluid Mechanics.
10. Outline of Methodology/ Experimental Design:

Following steps will be taken to complete the project work -

1. Water Channel- The water Channel will be constructed with frictionless materials on inner wall
for ensuring the smooth flow.
2. A close loop water channel will be constructed in which water will be circulated by using a pump.
3. Model water turbine will be made with having the ability to change the shape and size of blades to
figure out the optimum blade configuration for best performances.
4. Tachometer, ammeter and voltmeter, pressure gauge will be coupled with flow circuit to ensure
the reading of each observation during the performance evaluation.
