LABORATORY SHEET: 2D Machining

TITLE : CNC Water Jet Cutting

OBJECTIVE :

The objectives of the experiment are as follows;

a) To design a basic NC program for CNC water jet cutting.
b) To produce a part using CNC water jet cutting.
c) To investigate the part quality of CNC water jet cutting.

MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT :

The related equipment, machines, accessories, and materials involved during the demostration must be listed in
the report. A brief description of the instrumentation/set-up may be included if necessary.

1. Cutting equipment
2. Working platform
3. Control panel

INTRODUCTION/THEORY:

A water jet cutting is an industrial tool capable of cutting a wide variety of materials using a very high-pressure
jet of water, or a mixture of water and an abrasive substance. Water jet cutting uses high pressure jets of water
provided by pressurizing pumps that deliver a supersonic stream of water to cut and shape various types of
materials. The water is pressurized in water jet cutting and projected using a small precision nozzle. As the
water leaves the nozzle, it reaches speeds that are three times the speed of sound. A high pressure supply line
directs the pressurized water from the pump to the cutting head. When the pressurized water comes out from the
orifice, a water jet is created. The result is a very thin, extremely high velocity (approx. 900 m/s) water jet.
Then, solid abrasive particles are added and mixed with the water jet. Resulting abrasive water jet is focused to
the material through abrasive nozzle. Figure 1 (a) shows example of two cutting heads, which are water only
and water with abrasive. The difference between the two types can be seen in the red tube carrying the abrasive
to the water stream. Figure 1 (b) shows the diagram of water with abrasive jet meachining.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE :

The students will be briefed on how to experiment with water jet cutting. Please take note of the procedures for
cutting the workpiece by using this machine. Method of approach as followed:
i. Students are required to design a product using CAD such as CATIA.
ii. Students have to analyse and discuss the preparation of the workpiece and the machine setup based on
the programming code.
iii. Students also required to describe the cutting processes of the product using a water jet cutting
machine.

EXPERIMENTAL FINDINGS :

At the end of the lab session, students should be able to explain and describe the following key finding: -
• Programming code of the design product.
• Identify the significant parameters setting in WJC.
• Observation and evaluation of the product quality (surface finish) after WJC.

LAB REPORT PREPARATION :

Each student should submit a standard lab/technical report following the PO (Program Outcome) format. Actual
pictures of the machine, process, etc. would definitely make your report writing more impressive. The report
shall be a computer written, using Times New Roman font, font size in 12 and 1.5 spacing.
