How to 4x your productivity w/o

burning out (3-3-3 Method):
Dr. Christian Poensgen

The book I’ve gifted most often is Four

Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman.

And his 3-3-3 Method is one of my

favorite productivity tools.

It’s a wonderful way to win your days

with less stress – in 3 simple steps:
Dr. Christian Poensgen

1) Spend 3 hrs a day on your #1 thing

Spend 180 mins of deep work daily on

your most important project. To do so,
put 2 90-min sessions on your calendar.

Time it when motivation & focus peak

– 30 mins, 3 hrs or 11 hrs after waking.

For 75% of us, that’s in the morning. If

you’re a night owl, do it later in the day.
Dr. Christian Poensgen

- Why it works -

90 mins of daily deep work doubles your

overall productivity, McKinsey found.

180 mins, it turns out, quadruples it… so

you’ll 4x your daily output in just 3 hrs!

3 hrs is also the limit of deep work most

of us can do in a day. So get these in and
you’ll be golden.
Dr. Christian Poensgen

2) Timebox 3 shorter tasks

Put 3 shorter tasks into your calendar,

notably urgent meetings and email.

If there are appointments with others on

your calendar, you’re already timeboxing
your meetings. Congrats!

Yet, don’t stop there. Timebox some 3

daily email sessions – and turn email
off in between to avoid multitasking.
Dr. Christian Poensgen

- Why it works -

Avoiding multitasking (aka rapid task

switching) is vital to accomplish more
with less stress.

It can take 23 mins to refocus after task

switching. This decreases productivity by
50%, so work will take twice as long.

Lastly, multitasking sends your stress

levels through the roof. Bad idea.
Dr. Christian Poensgen

3) Plan 3 maintenance activities

Make time for 3 things in other life areas,

notably health & relationships.

Go to the gym. Get in that run. When

there’s no time, take a brisk walk.

Get lunch with a loved one or coffee with

a friend. Short on time? Give ‘em a call.
Dr. Christian Poensgen

- Why it works -

Maintenance activities require daily

attention to keep life running smoothly.

Health & relationships are the biggies.

Your body is a house you live in for
80+ yrs (or Four Thousand Weeks).

Your relationships make (or break) your

happiness, according to Harvard’s
85-year study. So choose wisely.
Dr. Christian Poensgen

TL;DR:

1. Use the 3-3-3 Method to 4x your

productivity without burning out.

2. Spend 3 hrs (or 2 90-min deep work

sessions) a day on your #1 thing.

3. Timebox 3 shorter tasks, notably

email to avoid multitasking.

4. Plan 3 maintenance activities in other

life areas, notably health & relationships.
