Unit Assignment

We have now finished looking at World War 1, Canada’s contribution to the war, and the
ways in which both Canada and the world were impacted by the war. To complete the unit, you
will need to complete a research assignment that will deepen your understanding of a part of
the war that you have a personal interest in. There is so much to this event in history and we
have really only scratched the surface, and I want to allow you to pursue what ever it is about
this conflict that you are interested in learning more about. I have listed some appropriate
topics below. You may do this assignment individually, in pairs, or as a group of three.

A. Topics:
Argumentative/Opinion Topics:
1. What is the biggest cause of the war?
2. Who was truly at fault for causing/starting the war?
3. Was the treaty of Versailles fair?
4. Considering both the human costs Canada suffered, the controversies that abounded in
Canada throughout the war, and the ways in which Canada benefitted from its
participation, was Canada’s active involvement in the war a good idea?
5. What was the most important impact of the war on Canada?
6. What was the most important technological development related to the war (consider
developments both before and during the war)?
7. What was the most significant development that led to the end of the war?
8. Why were the Canadians so much more effective as a fighting force than other groups?

Profiling the War:


9. Research another one of the fronts in the war
a. The Italian Front
b. The Serbian Front
c. The Eastern Front
d. The Caucasus Front
e. The Middle East
f. China
10. Do in-depth research on any specific battle of interest to you throughout the war
11. Do in-depth research on the development and use/application of any technology or
weaponry throughout the war
12. Research the participation of any colonial group/former colony in the war. Options may
include, but are not limited to:
a. Indigenous Canadians
b. Newfoundlanders
c. ANZAC forces (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps)
d. Indian and other South Asian regiments
e. South African regiments
f. Any of the French-African colonial forces
g. Arab tribal groups
13. How did war financing work, and what were the global economic impacts of that?
14. What was field medicine like during the war, and how was it different from previous
conflicts?

17. General Sir Arthur Currie (most-senior Canadian officer)

20. Any Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross (the highest possible military award for
bravery)

B. Topical Expectations:
1. If you are doing an argumentative topic, you need to follow argumentative structures
2. If you are profiling another front of the war, a battle, or a specific event or wartime
development, then please tell me:
a. Where it happened
b. What were the main developments throughout the battle/war?
c. What happened that was significant?
d. What was its contribution to the development of the war, or what was the
lasting impact of this following the war?

3. If you are profiling a technology, then please tell me:


a. When it was first developed
b. What country it was developed by, and any of the significant people involved in
its development and what their contributions were
c. What were the main developments and changes/improvements throughout the
war?
d. How did it contribute to the development of the war?

4. If you are profiling an individual, then please tell me:


a. Their early life (date and place of birth, parents, any important, relevant
information of childhood and early adulthood)
b. In what capacity they were involved in the war
c. How they contributed to the war effort of their country and how their
contributions were significant
d. How we have continued to remember and perhaps memorialize them today for
their contributions

C. Presentation Options:
As usual, you will have the option of presenting your ideas and research in any one of the
following ways:

1. A written presentation which can be either:


a. An essay which follows argumentative structures
 4 pages long, double-spaced and 12 pt. Calibri, Arial or Times New Roman
fonts
b. A report which follows reporting structures
 4 pages long, double-spaced and 12 pt. Calibri, Arial or Times New Roman
fonts
2. Create a visual presentation of some kind
a. Powerpoint, poster, flow chart, art gallery, etc.
b. At least 10 pictures to help the reader understand your ideas.

3. An oral presentation
a. Must include a visual element to help communicate your ideas
b. Approx 10-15 mins long

4. Create a multi-media presentation of some kind such as a prezi presentation, video,


website, etc.

D. Assignment Expectations:
1. You should be using a minimum of 5 good academic sources
2. You must properly reference any information that you use from various sources with
BOTH in-text referencing and a properly formatted reference list that follows the
Chicago-Turabian format. Please see the referencing guide posted on Moodle under
Resources
3. Argumentative topics may be done individually or in pairs. I will allow groups of 3 for the
other topics.
4. Please see the attached rubrics for how the assignment will be marked
5. This assignment will be due on Friday, November 10th.
