Rules - Simple and Advanced
• Text
Channels that have rules assigned to
them, can be processed as either Rich or
special-Fast
• Special-Fast is described in the next pages
22
Optimized - a new job type
Rich
• Variable data is processed on the Mac/PC and is embedded in the
output file.
• Longer processing time on Mac/PC and on Press/DFE.
• All of InDesign attributes can be used for designing the channels.
23
Optimized - a new job type
Optimized job includes:
• Rich Image channels
• Rich and special-Fast Text channels
– Designer automatically processes any Text
channel that can be Fast as special-Fast, and
if not, as Rich
• Special-Fast:
– Same as in Fast, with one difference:
Designer sets the exact position of every word
on the page, and the exact position of every
character on the page (for large point sizes)
– Results are more accurate
– Text positioning is more exact (in Fast, this
positioning is set by the press)
– Processing time is faster than Rich, but not as
fast as Fast
– The attribute list for special-Fast is the same as
for Fast type

2. In the Image Channel window,
select Dynamic Image
and Barcode Studio
3. Click Setting
4. In the window that opens,

Dynamic Personalization with MindFire
• Usersof HP SmartStream Designer and MindFireInc’s (MFI)
product, LookWho’sClicking (LWC), can now benefit from both
applications by creating variable data collaterals within Adobe
InDesign and add personalized URLs via a plug-in software
developed by MFI. These personalized campaigns can then be
tracked and measured using MFI’s LWC product
• An HP SmartStream Designer user creates an image Channel and
adds personalized URLs, using Dynamic Personalization with Mind
Fire. The MindFire software generates EPS files that contain
personalized URLs
• Same as with any other external applications, the customer needs
to purchase the MindFire application and get trained with it using
MindFire training tools
33
Dynamic Personalization with MindFire -
Example
1. A Text channel
applies “Dear First
Name” to “Please 3
click” a
personalized URL
2. An Image channel is
located on top, and
it contains the
MindFire
personalized URL
EPS files as
variable images
3. MindFire is selected 4
in the Image
Channel window 2
4. In the Settings 1
window, the
MindFire template
file is selected:
“Settings.txt” and
in Mapping
Variables pane, the
MindFire Variables
are mapped to the
Designer data fields (in this example: FirstName and LastName)
34
Dynamic Personalization with MindFire -
Example
• Once mapping is complete, you can use the Preview
palette to see the results
35
Dynamic Personalization with Rules –
An advanced option
• Dynamic Personalization can now be controlled by rules, which are used
to map the variable information
• The same Designer workflow steps are followed, with one change only:
the mapping process
1. Define an Image Channel
2. In the Modify Image channel window select:
– Type: Dynamic Image
– Application: any external application from the list
3. Click Setting. In the window that opens, browse to and select the external
application template file you have created (for example with Photoshop:
“File.psd”)
4. Map the variables of the external application, not to the database fields
of your job, but to rules that you have created
5. Click OK
6. See an example in the next pages
36
Dynamic Personalization with Rules -
Example
37
Dynamic Personalization with Rules -
Example
38
Dynamic Personalization with Rules -
Example - Photoshop steps
• Inthe Photoshop side,
after the 6 variable
layers are designed, two
variables need to be
defined or each layer,
and each variable needs
to be named
• Select
Image > Variables
> Define. Each layer is
defined with:
– Visibility: named va,
vb…vf
– Text Replacement: named
a,b…f
• Inthe example screen on
the right, see the 6th
layer variables,
definition, and name
39
Dynamic Personalization with Rules -
Example - Designer Substring rule
• Thisrule is 1 of 6
Substring rules, it is for
fence-board 2, rule name
is “B”:
– If the “name” field has
more than 1 character
– Then from the “name”
field, start with the 2nd
character and write 1
character only
“THEN(SUBSTRING(FIELD(
“name”),”2”, “1”))
• Thisrule and the other 5
Substring rules are
assigned to the
Photoshop variables in
the Dynamic
Personalization Setting
window
40
Dynamic Personalization with Rules -
Example - Simple rule for visibility
• ThisSimple Rule is also 1 of
6 rules that were defined
for the visibility of the 6
layers to be “false” or
“true”
• This
rule is for the second
fence-board character
named VB (VA for the first,
VB…VF)
– If the “name” field length is
bigger than 1, then the text is
“true” else text is is “false”
• Thisrule and the other
similar 5 rules are assigned
to the Photoshop variables
in the Dynamic
Personalization Settings
window (see next page)
41
Dynamic Personalization with Rules -
Example - Designer next step
• In
the Image Channel
window
– Type is Dynamic Image
– Application is Photoshop
42
Dynamic Personalization with Rules -
Example - Designer Settings (Mapping)
– Each Photoshop layer (1,2…6) has 2
variables, see Variables column:
• 1 for character (text replacement) (a,b…f)
• 1 for visibility (va, vb…vf)
– The rules appear in the Data Fields
column
• The Substring rules were named the same: “A”,
“B”…”F”
• The Simple Rules for visibility were also named
the same: VA, VB…VF so that mapping is easy
– The mapping of the Photoshop layers to
the substring rules determines that the 1st
character of a name will appear in the
layer of the first fence-board, and so on,
up to 6
– The mapping of the Simple Rules for
visibility determine that visibility is true or
false for each Fence-Board character
according to the name length 43
Dynamic Personalization with Rules –
An advanced option
• Once mapping is complete, you can use the Preview palette to
see the results

number of sheets comparing to number of
records (see the Total information line)
– Range of sheets
– Splitting to several output files every specific
number of sheets
– “Impose and then split” 45

49
Hot Folder automation workflow within the
Designer (Windows only)

should be placed in the
Template Hot Folder is not the
“indd” but a “ZIP” or “HPD” file

Pack Job option
50
Fix missing links
• Same as in previous version, when opening an existing
document, Designer checks its *links, and if broke, issues
a message with the option to re-link
• In the new version 4.0 there is an option to actively open
the Fix Missing Links message at any time: open
SmartStream>Tools>Fix Missing Links
– If all links are OK, an indication message appears
– If links are broken, details appears and the option to re-link
– After re-linking the green icon replaces the red
51
