Learning Math: Make it a Game PROBABILITY OF AN EVENT

By: Mrs. Babylyn V. Bolotano

I. TOPIC: PROBABILITY OF AN EVENT

II. OBJECTIVES:

a. Recall the definition of basic terms in probability ( experiment, outcome, sample space, sample
point, probability and event)
b. Find the probability of an event.
c. Solve problems involving probabilities.

III. MATERIALS:

Projector, laptop, mini board, flags, spinner (powerpoint game)

IV. PRELIMINARIES:

A. DRILL (Activity No.1): “4 Pics 1 Word”

Mechanics:

 Look at the four pictures and guess what the word is in common.

B. REVIEW(Activity No.2): “Last One Standing”

Mechanics:

 The game will start with 30 students/players answering a series of multiple choice questions
(A-Probability, B-Experiment, C-Outcome, D-Event, E-Sample Space, F-Sample Point),
hoping to eliminate all others until only one remains. Use the basic concepts of probability.

 If two people remain in the game and both choose the correct answer, the first person to
arrive at his/her choice is declared the winner.

Group Activity

1. The class will be divided into 6 groups.

2. Each group will be given a set of problems to work on.
3. Members of the group will discuss and answer among themselves the problem and write it on a
cartolina.
4. The representative of group will explain their work.

5. Formula:
Group 1 and 2

Get a 5-peso coin.

Toss the coin twice.
a. How many possible outcomes are there? _____
b. What are those possible outcomes? _____
c. What is the probability of both tails turning up? _____
d. What is the probability of getting a head and a tail? ______

Group 3 and 4

Roll the die once.

a. How many possible outcomes are there? _______
b. What are those outcomes? _______
c. What is the probability of a 3 on the top face? _______
d. What is the probability of an even number on the top face? _____

Group 5 and 6

Suppose you select, without looking, one marble from a bag containing 4 green marbles, 6 red marbles
and 5 blue marbles. What is the probability of selecting:
a. green _____
b. red _____
c. blue _____
d. yellow _____

NOTE: Teacher may give the following examples for the students to understand the lesson
better.

1. What is the probability of getting a HEART from a deck of cards?

13 1
P (heart) = =
52 4
2. There are 20 marbles in a container: 4 are red, 5 are blue and 11 are yellow. What is the probability
that a blue marble will be picked?
5 1
P (blue marble) = =
20 4
3. A bag contains 10 red marbles, 8 blue marbles and 2 yellow marbles. Find the theoretical probability of
getting a blue marble.
Solution:
There are 8 blue marbles. Therefore, the number of favorable outcomes = 8.
There are a total of 20 marbles. Therefore, the number of total outcomes = 20

4. Find the probability of rolling an even number when you roll a die containing the numbers 1-6. Express
the probability as a fraction, decimal, ratio and percent.
Solution:
The possible even numbers are 2, 4, 6. Number of favorable outcomes = 3.
Total number of outcomes = 6

The probability = (fraction) = 0.5 (decimal) = 1:2 (ratio) = 50% (percent)

VI. ANALYSIS:

Activity No.5: “My Love from the Star”

(powerpoint presentation)

Mechanics:
1. The class will be divided into 6 groups.
2. Each group will be given a board which they will use in
answering the question.
3. The teacher will read the question twice.
4. The students will only be given 3o seconds to answer.
5. Each group with a correct answer will be given a star,
number of stars will depend on the difficulty of the
questions.
6. Group with the most number of stars will win the game.

_____ 10. Numbers greater than or
equal to 35

VII. ABSTRACTION:

The probability of an event, P (event), is a number from 0 to 1 which tells how likely the event is to
happen.

Probability Rules

1. The probability of any event is a number (either a fraction, a decimal or a percent) from 0 to 1.

2. If an event will never happen, then its probability is 0.

3. If an event is sure to happen, then the probability is 1.

4. The sum of the probabilities of all the outcomes in the sample space is 1.

VIII. APPLICATIONS:
Activity No. 7: “ See My Prob-ability”

Solve the following carefully, then write the correct answer on the space provided before each number.

_____ 1. Earl Darenz is asked to choose a day from a week. What is the
probability of choosing a day which starts with S?
_____ 2. Choosing a month from a year, what is the probability of selecting a month with 31 days?
_____ 3 . If a letter is chosen at random from the word PERSEVERANCE, what is the probability that
the letter chosen is E?
_____4. If one letter is chosen at random from the word TRUSTWORTHY, what is the probability
that the letter chosen is a consonant?
_____ 5. The sides of a cube are numbered 11 to 16. If Jan Renz rolled the cube once, what is the
probability of rolling a composite number?
_____ 6. A box contains 7 red balls, 5 orange balls, 4 yellow balls, 6 green balls and 3 blue balls.
What is the probability of drawing out an orange ball?
