companies in a variety of industries are using the SAP Product Lifecycle Management (SAP PLM) application to achieve significant, solid results. Here are two examples. Clariant Germany, a global leader in the specialty chemicals industry, ensures safe and compliant handling of potentially hazardous goods with SAP PLM. Viola Meisterling, head of process teams, says, SAP software provides clariant a more transparent view of its business and processes. We can get information easily out of the system, and SAP software strengthens our market position because we are more flexible with our harmonized processes. The company benefits from the full integration of laboratory processes with supply chain functionality. in addition, information requested by customers is easily distributed, leading to higher customer satisfaction, increased efficiency, and improved data quality.

Arla Foods amba, a dairy cooperative owned by 11,600 milk producers in Denmark and Sweden, is europes largest dairy company. With top-quality support from the SAP consulting organization, the company implemented a project portfolio solution based on the SAP resource and Portfolio Management (SAP rPM) application and collaboration Projects (cProjects) application. (An implementation of SAP PLM can include these applications.) Business process manager Sune Slemming states, We needed one integrated solution to support well-structured and systematic project and portfolio management. The SAP solution allows us to view the status of all initiatives at once, support sound decisions to go, hold, or kill projects, manage resources more effectively, and ensure proper alignment of projects with Arlas overall business strategy. The new project and portfolio management solution supports two main areas of business processes: day-to-day tactical project management enabled by cProjects and high-level project portfolio management enabled by SAP rPM. SAPs solution enables Arlas management to quantify the actual business benefits of projects. Slemming adds, We wanted to know whether or not we actually received the business benefits we expected from our projects.

SAP software provides Clariant a more transparent view of its business and processes. We can get information easily out of the system, and SAP software strengthens our market position because we are more flexible with our harmonized processes.

Business processes dictate business performance. They help you differentiate yourself from the competition and serve as one of the primary means of creating business value. consistently, leaders across industry sectors are characterized by constant business process innovation and an ability to strip out inefficiencies involved with the management of product development, service, and compliance. Winning enterprises know how to orchestrate business processes to delight their customers and collaborate more effectively with partners and suppliers. They know how to bring innovative products to market in the shortest time and at the lowest cost. And these successful companies know how to instill confidence in stakeholders and regulators with fully transparent product development and production processes. in a fast-changing world where business success is so tightly correlated to business process success, companies like yours need a core product life-cycle management (PLM) solution that goes far beyond simple support for generic transactions. rather, your PLM foundation should provide robust functionality specific to the challenges you face in your industry while supporting the flexibility and scalability you require to respond to rapid change as your business grows. At the same time, it must be intuitive

enough for employees to master and powerful enough to leverage enterprise information so that they can make informed decisions on a day-to-day basis that align with corporate strategy. This is why so many of the worlds best-run companies rely on SAP PLM the market-leading product life-cycle management application that provides you with a single, integrated foundation to master your product business. Manufacturers, to survive in an everchanging global environment, must focus more time and energy on their competitive market differentiation. What made a company competitive and market viable in the past will certainly be challenged tomorrow. Ultimately, the ability of companies to invent and deliver to market new and innovative products faster than their competitors will enable them to succeed and grow. This concept and urgency of creating and delivering innovative and market-differentiating products and services is driving SAPs development efforts. SAP is committed to providing 360-degree support for all product-related processes from the first product idea to manufacturing to product service. This is what SAP calls product and service leadership. fundamentally, it is an acknowledgment that to deliver innovative products and thereby differentiate your company in targeted markets, you must view your

products in the context of your complete business environment: processes, people, and solutions. Major challenges for manufacturers today can be categorized into three categories: product innovation, product and process synchronization, and business acceleration. Within each of these categories are significant challenges that vary in applicability and priority depending on the specific industry a business is in. SAPs strategy for PLM is based on three dominant business trends: creation and delivery of innovative products that fulfill or create market demand end-to-end optimization of product-developing processes and solutions to speed products to market while ensuring compliance with industry, quality, and regulatory standards Business acceleration to become more agile than competitors and take advantage of market and competitive opportunities across business networks of strategic partners and suppliers

Product Innovation
in order to survive, companies need to create and deliver innovative products that fulfill or generate market demand. But the innovation process is often slow or broken; information is stored in silos within the company, making it very hard to build an innovative network and capture and translate ideas into innovative products. Tracking innovation is almost impossible. Product innovation requires effective product and portfolio planning with powerful tools for idea management, portfolio management, and requirements management in the early stages of the innovation process. All employees involved in product development and manufacturing need to have access to the same up-to-date product data in order to avoid time- and moneyconsuming errors and delays.

efficiently instruments that are easy to use and reliable. They need an end-to-end optimization of product development processes, solutions to speed products to market, and analytic functions that enable a product-centric view. compliance with industry, quality, and regulatory standards is also vital for the success of a globally acting company.

Business Acceleration
Many companies face declining market shares and stronger competition, and optimizing the results of single departments within a company is no longer enough to address these challenges. What makes you more agile than your competitors is the ability to leverage the advantages of integration and networking. if you are able to profit from the people, new technologies, and synchronized processes of acquired companies, you can react more quickly and take advantage of market and competitive opportunities across your business networks. With the integration of your PLM solution with the SAP Business Suite family of business applications, you can globalize your operations: design, manufacture, and support anytime, anywhere.

Product and Process Synchronization

Day-to-day processes need to run smoothly. And nothing will reduce the motivation of your employees more than missing or inconsistent data, or a disconnected design chain and supply chain. Your employees need the right instruments to help them manage their daily tasks in product development

With the move to enhancement packages, SAP is the first and only enterprise software provider to leverage enterprise SoA to deliver new features and functionality.

SAP remains deeply committed to supporting your industry-specific needs. for all discrete manufacturing sectors, as well as consumer products, process, and utilities industries, PLM solutions are a must to stay in business and remain competitive.

Consumer Products, Process, and Utilities Industries

The consumer products, process, and utilities industries parallel the discrete manufacturing industry in many respects. for example, these industries involve development, manufacture, assembly, support, and maintenance processes. However, other factors influence the PLM needs of process industries, such as compliance with ever-changing government regulations, operational documentation, and extensive functionality testing that must be completed before production can begin. These industries can use SAP PLM to address these and other essential needs.

Discrete Manufacturing Industry

The discrete manufacturing sector is strongly engaged in implementing PLM. in addition to overall market forces, these industries face special challenges, including global competition, complex supply chain management issues, intense cost pressures, and time-tomarket demands that can make or break a companys profitability. Many discrete manufacturers have implemented SAP PLM to help them create innovative products that distinguish them from their competitors. Their enterprises and employees have become more productive and efficient, and they can now effectively collaborate with and leverage the resources of their worldwide business partners.
