– Insert battery in battery tray -1- in such a way that battery base
strip makes contact at bottom and side of stop -arrows-.
• It should no longer be possible to move battery towards rear
or sides.

– Store the ignition key outside the vehicle to prevent the ignition

– Remove lock carrier trim ⇒ General body repairs, interior;
Rep. gr. 70 ; Luggage compartment trims; Removing and in‐
stalling lock carrier trim .
– Loosen nut -2- a few turns.
– Pull battery clamp -1- of earth wire off negative battery termi‐
nal.

– Place battery - A- into battery tray -1- so that battery base strip
lies against stops at bottom and sides -arrows-.
• It should no longer be possible to move battery - A- towards
rear or sides.

Disconnecting
– Switch off ignition and all electrical consumers.
– Keep the ignition key outside the vehicle to prevent the ignition
from being switched on unintentionally.
– Open cover -1- on battery negative terminal.
– Loosen nut -3- a few turns.
– Pull battery clamp -2- of earth wire off battery terminal.
Connecting
Observe the following when connecting the battery:

Note
After the voltage supply has been switched back on, the vehicle
must travel several meters before the ESP warning lamp goes
out.

rear.
– Loosen nut -2- a few turns.
– Pull battery clamp -1- of earth wire off negative battery termi‐
nal.
Connecting

Removing
– Remove battery - A- ⇒ page 7 .
– If necessary, remove air filter housing ⇒ Rep. gr. 23 ; Air filter;
Removing and installing air filter housing or ⇒ Rep. gr. 24 ;
Air filter; Removing and installing air filter housing .
– Lay wiring harness on battery tray -arrows A- to one side.
– If fitted, release fastener -arrow B- on water separator for dual
clutch gearbox -1-, and unclip water separator -1- upwards
from battery tray.
– If fitted, release fasteners -arrows C- on bracket for control unit
for NOx sender - J583- -2-, and pull bracket for control unit for
NOx sender - J583- -2- upwards off battery tray.
Removing

– Separate electrical connector -2- on battery monitor control
unit - J367- -3-.

Make sure that bushes slide freely and are not too tight (loosen,
if necessary) because otherwise the clamping force of a stiff bush
will be insufficient even when the correct torque is applied.

Removing
– With ignition switched off, disconnect earth cable from battery
⇒ page 14 .
– Remove radiator cowl ⇒ Rep. gr. 19 ; Radiator/radiator fan;
Removing and installing radiator cowl .
– Remove poly V-belt ⇒ Rep. gr. 13 ; Cylinder block, pulley end;
Removing and installing poly V-belt .
– Unscrew bolts -1- and -2-.
– Release hose clips -1- and -2- and remove air intake hose.
– Seal open lines and connections using clean plugs from en‐
gine bung set - VAS 6122- .
Caution
Removing
– With ignition switched off, disconnect earth cable from battery

Make sure that bushes slide freely and are not too tight (loosen,
if necessary) because otherwise the clamping force of a stiff bush
will be insufficient even when the correct torque is applied.

Removing

– Release and disconnect connector on headlight -4-.
– Guide out headlight -4- towards front. When doing this, detach

Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal, observing the following:
– Press headlight into bumper guide.

– Turn ignition key to “Ignition ON” position. This will align the
recess in trim -arrow- with hole in ignition lock.
WARNING
Note
– Press lock cylinder -1- together with reader coil into steering
lock housing -3-.
– Remove locking pin - T40011- from hole -2-.
– Press in lock cylinder tightly until locking mechanism can be
heard to engage.
– Release retaining clip -arrow A-, and pull ignition key with‐
drawal lock solenoid - N376- -2- off steering lock housing -1-
-arrow B-.
– The electrical connection will be disconnected automatically.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal.

in zero position.

steering column switch base until it securely engages.
– Push preassembled unit consisting of steering lock housing,
base for steering column combination switch and steering col‐
umn combination switch - E595- as far as it will go onto
steering column, and align it with threaded holes.
– Secure steering lock housing -3- to steering column using new
shear-head bolts -1-.
– Tighten new shear-head bolts -1- until bolt heads shear off.
Further installation is performed in reverse sequence.
