Nowadays, taking a year out to live or study abroad is becoming increasingly popular. For many
people, especially young adults, the chance to spend an extended period of time overseas is an

Task 6: Read a sample essay about the pros and cons of online learning. Circle the thesis
statement. Underline the topic sentence in each body paragraph.
Online education in its various modes has been growing rapidly worldwide thanks to the global
adoption of the Internet. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of e-learning in
detail.

On the one hand, there are a number of benefits of learning on the internet. Firstly, it is very
convenient to learn online. We can learn anywhere anytime on our devices with internet access.
Busy learners can study at home, in a café or even at their workplace during lunchtime. Secondly,
online courses are much cheaper than formal education. In fact, learners attend virtual classrooms
without any requirement for modern facilities; therefore, the average tuition fee is much lower.
Also, we can save our budget because we do not have to travel back and forth to attend online
classes.

On the other hand, there are also certain drawbacks of e-learning. Firstly, learning on the
internet is not suitable for certain groups of learners such as young children and the elderly who
tend to be unfamiliar with using modern devices such as smart phones or computers for online
learning. Also, it is common that our online learning is interrupted due to power loss or unstable
internet connection. Furthermore, online learners can easily get distracted by online games, movies
or social networks, as a result, their concentration on the lessons is much lower than in face-to-face
classes.

In conclusion, everything has two sides and online learning is not an exception. I believe that its
advantages outweigh its disadvantages. (251 words)
