Initial Phase 1. To build insight and motivate her for change by:
 Developing therapeutic alliance with client by establishing rapport
through reflecting empathy, genuineness and unconditional positive regard.
 Assess the client’s level of insight
toward the “presenting problems”
 Educating client about nature of psychological problems and how
therapy works.
 Clarifying misconceptions regarding psychotherapy
 Formulating goals of therapy

2. Increase emotional modulation and decrease emotional reactivity by:


 Teaching ABC model about how distorted cognitions lead to
Middle Phase unhealthy emotions which in turn result in maladaptive
behaviors.
 Learning to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy
emotions.
 Learning to modulate emotional control by teaching Core
Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance
techniques.
 Introducing deep breathing to teach relaxation. Recording
thoughts, feelings, and emotions that elicit while aggressive
situations and understanding phases of anger and strategies to
control it.

3. Stabilize interpersonal relationships by:


 explore the themes of rejection and distancing
 encouraging client to examine her own emotions about how fear
of abandonment contributes to the distancing and reduction of
intimacy in interpersonal relationships.
 Challenge and dispute the client’s irrational beliefs regarding the
fear of abandonment and replacing extreme reactions with less
extreme ones.
 Teaching ways to accurately empathize with and validate feelings
of another person.

4. Increase respect for self by:


 Changing dysfunctional self-image by restructuring unhelpful
dysfunctional thoughts.
 Increasing self-esteem and self-confidence by positive self-talk,
self-compassion and self-esteem enhancing exercises.
5. Increase problem-solving skills i.e., Increase realistic judgment while
decreasing crisis-generating behavior by:
 Challenging client’s distorted cognitions that hinder problems solving in
stressful situations. (For example: catastrophizing, ideas, mind reading,
minimization and maximization etc.).

6. Increase communication skills by:


 Teaching assertive training to enhance interpersonal relationships.
(Through role playing and behavioral reversal).

 Assessing effectiveness of therapeutic interventions.


 Checking the goals achieved that were set for therapy.
Termination Phase  Preparing client for termination and helping her to practice techniques
taught in the therapy sessions.
 Scheduling follow up sessions and teaching the client strategies to
prevent relapse.
