Exam Question

The document discusses a survey course and provides questions related to surveying terms, instruments, branches of surveying, leveling procedures, sources of errors, and principles of map production. Students are asked to define terms, distinguish between instruments, reduce levels from staff readings, and perform calculations related to linear measurements and map scales.

REDEEMER COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT (RECTEM)

COURSE: BASIC PRINCIPLES OF SURVEYING I SUG 101 TIME: 2hrs

Instruction: Answer 3 Questions. (Question 1 and Question 3 is Compulsory)

1a. Briefly explain the following terms in Survey.

(i) Working from whole to part

(ii) Accuracy and Precision
(iii) Reconnaissance
(iv) Linear measurement

bi. Mention 5 survey instruments you know and their functions.

ii. Distinguish between a Total Station and Theodolite.

c. Define the following branches of surveying:

(i) Cadastral Surveying

(ii) Topographical Surveying

(iii) Engineering Survey

(iv) Photogrammetory (Aerial Surveying)

2a. A chain of nominal length 30.00 is found to be 0.10m long. If the chain was used to carry
out a perimeter survey of a 100hectares piece of land, find the true area.

b. A base line known to be precisely 100m long was measured with a norminal 20m tape.
The observed length of the base was found to be 99.925m. What is the actual length of
the tape?

c. A surveyor decided to suspend the tape above the ground because the ground were the
survey was carried out is uneven identify two possible errors in taking linear
measurement.
3a. The following staff reading were taken along a straight length of a railway track. Reduce
the level and check the accuracy of the using instrument height method.

b. Highlight sources of errors due to natural causes in leveling and state precautional
measures you will take to avoid them.

4.

Identify the parts of the electronics theodolite labeled 1, 4, 7, 12 and 13

ai. Convert 30o17' 22'' to radiance.
b. Define map scale.
(i) A field plan of area of 17.436 hectares covers 27900mm2 on paper. What is the scale?
(ii) A plan plotted to a scale of 1:250 was found to have stretched by 2%. A line scale on the
plan produced a distance of 227.5m. What is the true distance.
c. State the principles of plan production.
