CE3025 - Traffic Engineering: Assignment – 1

Due date: Total Marks: 60

Instructions;
1. Any missing values or parameters shall be assumed as per suitable engineering
judgement and shall be clearly stated.
2. Any assumptions made whilst answering the questions shall be clearly stated.

Questions:

1. Speed data collected on an urban roadway yielded a standard deviation in speeds of 4.8
km/h. (5 marks)

a) If an engineer wishes to estimate the average speed on the roadway at a 95%

confidence level so that the estimate is within +/-2 km/h of the true average, how
many spot speed observations should be collected?
b) If the estimate of the average must be within +/-1 km/h, what should the sample
size be?
2. The traffic data were collected at two point x and y which are 1500ft apart. Six vehicles
(A, B, C, D, E and F) passed section x-y at intervals between each two successive vehicle of
3, 4, 3, 6, and 5 sec respectively. Vehicles speeds are 50, 45, 40, 35, 35 and 45mph
respectively and observed that vehicles are not moving at uniform speed.
(5 marks)
a) Draw a schematic showing the locations of the vehicle entered the section x
during the 20 sec after the first vehicle passed this section.
b) Time mean speed
c) Flow
d) Density

3. The results of a speed study are given in the form of a frequency distribution table. The
time mean speed and space mean speed respectively are____? Also, find the coefficient of
variation in speed. (5
marks)

Frequency
Speed range (mps)
(pcu/hr)

2.5 1

7.5 4

11.5 0

15.5 7
4. The traffic engineer wants to analyze the distribution of vehicle speed on a certain stretch
of highway. The speed data of 200 vehicles with observed frequencies are given in the table
below. Using the chi square test check whether the data follow normal distribution at 95%
confidence level. (10
marks)

Speed range (km/hr) Frequency

0-50 20

51-60 30

61-70 50

71-80 40

81-90 30

91-100 20

101-110 10

5. Figure below shows a 100m road stretch, where the speeds of the vehicles in this stretch
were identified as shown below. Calculate the flow, density, space mean speed, time mean
speed and average time spent by a vehicle on this stretch. (5
marks)

6. From a traffic study, it was observed that there are 18 vehicles on a 380m section of an
urban road and an average time headway of 6 sec is observed. Calculate: (5
marks)

a) Density
b) Flow
c) Space mean speed
d) If the standard deviation of the spot speeds of the vehicles is calculated to be
22 km/h, calculate the time mean speed.
7. Using the data given below, draw the histogram frequency distribution and cumulative
percentage distribution for each set of data. Also, determine (10
marks)
a) Average speed
b) 85th percentile speed
c) 15th percentile speed
d) Mode
e) Median

8. a) Define the following terms

I. Parking volume
II. Parking accumulation
III. Parking load
IV. Parking duration
V. Parking turnover

b) Data collected at a parking lot indicate that a total of 200 cars park between 8 a.m. and 5
p.m. 10% of these cars are parked for an average of 2 hr, 15% for an average of 3 hr, 25 %
for an average of 4 hr and the remaining cars are parked for an average of 9 hr. Determine the
space-hours of demand at the lot. If 10% of the parking bays are vacant on average (between
8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.) at the parking lot, determine the number of parking bays in the
parking lot. Assume an efficiency factor of 0.90. (5
marks)
9. Below Table shows data obtained in a travel time study on a section of highway using the
moving-vehicle technique. Estimate (5 marks)

a) Travel time
b) Volume in each direction at this section of the highway.

10. During a 60 sec period, a detector is occupied by vehicles for the following time
intervals of 0.34, 0.38, 0.4, 0.32 and 0.52. Estimate % occupancy, flow, density and
average speed. Assume loop detector length and vehicle length as 2m and 5m
respectively. (5 marks)
