Topic: Unit II - Friction
Deadline for submission: 18 January 2022, 11:59 pm.

These are a total of 23 problems for your practice. It covers the Friction topic of Unit II of this course. Out of
these, pick up those problems that are NOT discussed in the classroom, online lectures. Submit the solutions
to those problems as your Assignment II. Please upload your assignment on your course team assignment
page by the given deadline. This assignment will be counted to your CWS.

Q1. Determine the range of values which the mass m0 may


have so that the 100-kg block shown in the figure will
neither start moving up the plane nor slip down the plane.
The coefficient of static friction for the contact surfaces is
0.30.
[Ans: Maximum m0 = 62.4 kg, Minimum m0 = 6.01 kg]

Q2. The homogeneous rectangular block of mass m, width b,


and height H is placed on the horizontal surface and subjected
to a horizontal force P which moves the block along the surface
with a constant velocity. The coefficient of kinetic friction
between the block and the surface is µk. Determine (a) the
greatest value which h may have so that the block will slide
without tipping over and (b) the location of a point C on the
bottom face of the block through which the resultant of the
friction and normal forces acts if h = H/2.
[Ans: h = b/2 µk, x = µk H/2]

Q3. The three identical rollers are attacked on a horizontal surface as


shown. If the coefficient of static friction μs is the same for all pairs of
contacting surfaces, find the minimum value of μs for which the rollers
will not slip.

block. If the coefficient of static friction between the
cylinder and the block is 0.50, determine (a) the friction
force F acting on the cylinder at each side before force P
is applied and (b) the value of P required to start sliding
the cylinder up the incline.

Q6. The two blocks are placed on the incline with the
cable taut. (a) Determine the force P required to
initiate motion of the 15 kg block if P is applied down
the incline. (b) If P is applied up the incline and slowly
increased from zero, determine the value of P which
will cause motion and describe that motion.
[Ans: (a) P = 56.5 N (b) When T goes slack:
P=162.0 N, When T does not go slack: P=157.3 N]

Q7. The strut AB of negligible mass is hinged to


the horizontal surface at A and to the uniform 24-
kg wheel at B. Determine the minimum couple M
applied to the wheel which will cause it to slip if
the coefficient of static friction between the wheel
and the surface is 0.40.
[Ans: 19.81 N-m]
Q8. The 20-kg steel ring A with inner and outer radii of 50 mm and
60 mm respectively, rests on a fixed horizontal shaft of 40-mm
radius. If a downward force P=150 N applied to the periphery of
the ring is just sufficient to cause the ring to slip, calculate the
coefficient of friction μ and the angle θ.
[Ans: μ=0.609; θ=31.3o]

Q9. The 30 kg homogeneous cylinder of 400 mm diameter rests


against the vertical and inclined surfaces as shown. If the coefficients
of static and kinetic friction between all contacting surfaces are 0.30,
calculate the applied clockwise couple M which would cause the
cylinder to slip.
[Ans: NB=312 N, NA=237 N, M=32.9 N-m]

Q10. A clamp is used to hold two pieces of wood together as


shown. The clamp has a double square thread of mean diameter
equal to 10 mm with a pitch of 2 mm. The coefficient of friction
between threads is µs = 0.30. If a maximum torque of 40 N*m
is applied in tightening the clamp, determine (a) the force
exerted on the pieces of wood, and (b) the torque required to
loosen the clamp.
[Ans: (a) W=17.97 kN, Torque = 14.87 N-m]

Q11. Determine the distance s to which the 90-kg painter can climb without
causing the 4-m ladder to slip at its lower end A. The top of the 15-kg ladder
has a small roller, and at the ground the coefficient of static friction is 0.25.
The mass center of the painter is directly above her feet.
[Ans: (a) s = 2.55 m]
Q12. A 6.5-m ladder AB leans against a wall as shown. Assuming that the
coefficient of static friction µs is zero at B, determine the smallest value of
µs at A for which equilibrium is maintained.
[Ans: µs = 0.2083]

Q13. The coefficient of static friction between the 100-kg


body and the wedge is 0.20. Determine the magnitude of
the force P required to begin raising the 100-kg body if
(a) rollers of negligible friction are present under the
wedge, as illustrated, and (b) the rollers are removed and
the coefficient of static friction applies at this surface as
well.
[Ans: (a) P = 485 N, (b) P= 681 N]

Q14. If the coefficient of friction between the steel wedge and


the moist fibers of the newly cut stump is 0.20, determine the
maximum angle α which the wedge may have and not pop out of
the wood after being driven by the sledge.
[Ans: α = 22.6o]

Q15. Calculate the horizontal force P on the light 100 wedge


necessary to initiate movement of the 40.kg cylinder. The
coefficient of static friction for both pairs of contacting surfaces is
0.25. Also determine the friction force FB at point B. (Caution:
Check carefully your assumption of where slipping occurs.)
[Ans: P = 98.6 N, FB = 24.96 N]
Q16: A flat belt is wrapped around a pulley. The angle of contact of the belt over the pulley is β.
If T2 is the tension on the tight side, T1 is the tension on the slack side of the belt, and μ is the
coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley show that T2 = T1eμβ.

Q17. A flexible cable which supports the 100-kg load is


passed over a fixed circular drum and subjected to a force P
to maintain equilibrium. The coefficient of static friction μ
between the cable and the fixed drum is 0.30. (a) For α = 0,
determine the maximum and minimum values which P may
have in order not to raise or lower the load. (b) For P _ 500
N, determine the minimum value which the angle α may
have before the load begins to slip.
[Ans: (a) Pmax= 1572 N, Pmin = 612 N (b) α = 38.7o]

Q18. The 80 Kg tree surgeon lowers himself with the rope over a
horizontal limb of the tree. If the coefficient of friction between the
rope and the limb is 0.60, compute the force which the man must exert
on the rope to let himself down slowly.
[Ans: 103.45 N]

Q19. The block of weight W is supported by a rope that is wrapped


one-and-one-half times around the circular peg. Determine the range of values
of P for which the block remains at rest. The coefficient of static friction
between the rope and the peg is 0.2.
[Ans: 0.152W ≤ P ≤ 6.59W]

Q20. What is the minimum coefficient of friction µ between the rope


and the fixed shaft which will prevent the unbalanced cylinders from
moving?

Q21. A steel cable supporting a 60-kg mass is run a quarter of
the way around a steel cylinder and supported by a pulling force
as shown in the diagram below. The static coefficient of friction
between the cable and the steel cylinder is 0.3.
a) What is the minimum pulling force required to lift the mass?
b) What is the minimum pulling force required to keep the mass
from falling?

[Ans: Fpull = 942.9 N (to lift), Fpull = 367.4 N (to keep from
falling)]

Q22: A flat belt connects pulley A to pulley B. The coefficients of


friction are µs = 0.25 and µk = 0.20 between both pulleys and the belt.
Knowing that the maximum allowable tension in the belt is 3 kN,
determine the largest torque which can be exerted by the belt on pulley
A.
[Ans: 0.245 kN.m]

Q23. What is the maximum height ‘h’ of the step so that the
force P will role the cylinder of weight 25 kg over the step
without impending slippage at the point of contact A. Take the
coefficient of friction to be equal to 0.3.

[Ans: hmax = 0.248 m]
