communicate effectively in Malaysia. This emphasizes the need of cultural awareness
in cross-cultural relationship. “Language politeness is a key aspect of Malay culture in
Malaysia and young people should practice it as impoliteness represent identity

and pragmatics, which are indicative of cultural nuances. Sentence structure is
arranged by syntax, which also affects word order for emphasis and clarity. Words are
given meanings by semantics, which is enhanced by context and cultural meanings.
When navigating social encounters, pragmatics takes cultural norms and inferred
meanings into account. Family names like “mak” (mother), for instance, imply respect
and affection and strengthen the bonds within the family. Gaining an awareness of

unease and conflict. For instance, “lah” is a colloquial marker with multiple meanings
depending on context, its usage in Malaysian English may be misinterpreted by
outsiders. Furthermore, in Malaysian culture, certain gestures like pointing with index
finger can be interpreted as impolite, whereas in other cultures, they could be
regarded harmless or even courteous. Ignorance of these subtleties may cause
unintentional offence or confusion. Therefore, in Malaysia’s diverse community,
cultural sensitivity and knowledge are essential for promoting mutual understanding
and successful communication.
