Internet, Intranet and Extranet
The internet is the largest computer network system in the world. It consists
of many smaller networks connected together by a global public network.

An Intranet is a private network that belongs to an organization, and is


designed to be accessible only by the organization’s members, employees, or
other with authorization.

Extranet is an intranet (or part of) that has been selectively opened to strategic
allies (including customers, suppliers and other associates)
THE WORLD WIDE WEB (WWW)
The WWW is often referred to as the Web. It is a part of the internet. It is a
huge collection of text, documents called web pages. These web pages are
grouped into websites, stored on web servers, downloaded and displayed on a
user’s computer by a web browser.
A Web Page is a document, written in Hyper Text Markup Language
(HTML), that may contain text, sound, images, video clips, hyperlinks and
other components.
A Website is a group of web pages that belong together and are linked to
each other using hyperlinks. Each website has a Home Page. This is an
initial page designed to greet viewers to a website.
THE WORLD WIDE WEB (WWW) – Cont’d
Web browser - Web browser is a program that is used to view web pages.
Examples:
Microsoft internet explorer
Mozilla Firefox.
Google Chrome

A web server is a computer that is dedicated to storing web sites (collection of


web pages). When a request is made to access a web site, the request is sent to
web server.
A hyperlink is an icon, information object, underlined or otherwise emphasized
word or phrase that displays another document when clicked on with a mouse.
Uniform Resource Locater (URL)
URL - is a unique address for a web page.

Example of an URL:
Electronic Mail (E-mail)
Electronic Mail (E-Mail) is mail that is sent and received electronically over a
network.

Advantages and Disadvantages of E-Mail

Advantages Disadvantages
• It is a fast way of sending and • It cannot be used to sent parcels

• It is cheaper to send than normal who do not have an e-mail
mail account

OTHER TERMS ASSOCIATED WITH
THE INTERNET
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) and Instant Messaging – A messaging systems that

allows users to ‘chat’ with other people on the Internet using text messages.

Common IRC applications include Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk and

Whatsapp.

Bulletin Board – an electronic forum that hosts post messages and articles

related to a common subject.

Newsgroup – an online discussion group or forum specifically focused on a

particular area of interest.


BLOGS VS PODCASTS

A blog or web log is a diary maintained by its author on the world wide web. It
allows people to comment on the posts. It is a personal web page similar to a
journal where you record your thoughts, the events in your life and any other
information you want to share with people.

A podcast is an audio broadcast using the internet that can be played back on an
iPod or similar device. Podcasts have become very popular with radio
broadcasters, making their programs available online so listeners can catch up
with any program they might have missed.
E-Learning
E-Learning – A computer-based learning done over the internet. Students
download notes and materials from a website. They join online discussions with
tutors and other students in forums and chat rooms.

Advantages of e-learning include:

✔You can take a course in your own time and not obliged to attend classes

✔You can choose from a wide range of courses and they are often cheaper than
courses held in a classroom

✔You can study at your own pace

✔You can study from home


Social Networking
Social networking sites allow people to set up their own personal space on

the internet. You can upload your photographs, write notes and post
information about yourself. These sites usually require you to have other
sites users with whom you network. Some popular social networking sites
are MySpace, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
