Case-Study Questions (Application of Derivatives)

1. A man has an expensive square shape piece of golden board of size 24 cm is to be made
into a box without top by cutting from each corner and folding the flaps to form a box.

(i) Find the volume of open box formed by folding up the flap?
(ii) What should be the side of the square piece to be cut from each corner of the board to
behold the maximum volume?
(iii) What should be the maximum volume of open box?
2. A telephone company in a town has 500 subscribers on its list and collects fixed charges
of 300 per subscriber per year. The company proposes to increase the annual
subscription and it is believed that for every increase of 1 one subscriber will discontinue
the service.

(i) If x be the annual subscription then what is the total revenue of the company
after increment?
(ii) How much fee the company should increase to have maximum profit?
(iii) Find the maximum profit that the company can make if the profit function is
given by P(x) = 41 + 24x – 18x2.
(iv) Find both the maximum and minimum values respectively of 3x4 – 8x3 + 48x + 1
on the interval [1, 4].

whole floor including the semi-circular ends. For this to happen find the valve of x ?
(iv) Find the extra area generated if the area of the whole floor is maximized ?
7. Dr. Ritam residing in Delhi went to see an apartment of 3BHK in Noida. The
window of the house was in the form of a rectangle surmounted by a semi-
circular opening having a perimeter of the window 10m as shown in figure.

Based on the above information answer the following.

(i) Find the area of the window (A) expressed as a function of x?


(ii) For maximum area A, find the breadth of rectangular part of window?
(iii) In order to get the maximum light through the whole window, find the area of
the semi-circular opening of the window.
