Personal Statement

I am writing to apply for the program MSC Rural Land and Business Management at the
University of Reading. For my future career I chose land management and in particular I would
like to focus on management of rural lands. The reason of my career choice is abundance of
fertile lands in Ukraine and it is one of the main resources of the country. Development of
agriculture sector is the primary objective for the national economy and I chose this profession
because I see a lot of opportunities for my country exactly in this field.

I received Master`s degree in Land Management and Cadastre from National University of Life
and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine in Kiev. For my further specialization I would like to
focus on rural business and enterprise. Although, I took different subjects related to land
management we did not have concentration on rural areas. For my Master thesis I researched
land market in Ukraine, in particular land assessment and evaluation in small cities. Although
my thesis was focused on non-agricultural lands, some parts of my analysis were closely related
to rural areas. I realized that we have very few specialists who work on rural land development
in Ukraine, although this is a highly potential resource in the country. It became my main
motivation why I choose this specific concentration for my future studies. While studying at
Bachelor program I got a great theoretical knowledge, but the meaning and specificity of work in
this industry, I have come to realize through my first internship. During my study at University I
had internships related to land planning. I was responsible for preparation of technical
documentation, issuing acts on land ownership and other land surveying works. I took part in the
evaluation of land, issued and registered state documents and treaties. During practice I got skills
on the state land cadastre and familiarized with the legal and regulatory base concerning land
relations and the state land management. Practical experience has helped me to realize the
importance of theoretical knowledge and motivated me to study academic subjects in more
profound way at the university that significantly improved my academic performance.

I’m very interested in studying at the University of Reading, because it has a high ranking in
land management area and I believe this will give me necessary experience for successful career
as the land planner in my country. The program on Rural Land and Business Management
provides great opportunity to learn from the UK experience of rural land management and
enterprise. In particular, I would like to concentrate on rural policy, planning and land valuation
in order to contribute to development of rural lands in my home country. I believe that
University of Reading provides supportive environment for international students to acquire new
knowledge and share the experience in the field. It will be honor to join this program and study
at the University of Reading. Thank you for your consideration of my application.
