Introduction
Welcome to your second 30 credit module on the Foundation Program in Art, Media and
Design at UWE. This module aims to introduce you to a broad range of creative materials,
processes and ways of making. Through step by step instruction and hands on participation
you will follow six one day briefs, producing a range of images, objects and digital artefacts.
By the end of the module you will have expanded your practical and technical skills, and
experimented with different ways to communicate meaning, engage an audience and express
your own concepts and themes.
You will be supported in fully and professionally documenting your learning, making and
experimentation, and you will be provided with multiple opportunities to reflect on your own

progress, evaluate your skills and making, and expand your understanding through further
investigation and research.

Please note that this electronic version of the handbook will be kept up to date and you will
be notified of any significant changes. If you have taken a hard copy of any information
please remember to refer back to the electronic version to ensure that you are working with
the most up to date information.

2. Module Enhancement

In response to student feedback, we have enhanced this module by:

 Re-integrating a Field Trip at the beginning of the module.

 Dedicating a week to drawing activities to kickstart the module.
 Tutor Group sessions will return during the Elective modules
 Integrating more activities for creative acquisition.

 Staggering assignments submission within the module journey.

 More opportunities for open studio access.

3
 More collaborative opportunities to work with students from the different programme
specialisms.

 Embedding link tutor sessions throughout the term.

3. Module Specific Information

This module builds on the practical and intellectual skills introduced during the “Observation
and Making” introductory module. Continuing in a similar style to Module 1: Tuesdays and
Thursdays are studio and/or project days on a Wednesday and Friday you will maintain the
same tutor group and lead tutor. The work developed from these projects will provide the
student with the initial “Creative Acquisition” skills and understanding to develop a proposal
and produce a body of work which gives them scope to acquire skills in the following:

· How to initiate and develop ideas.

· How to identify and pursue a line of enquiry.

· How to solve problems.

· How to develop a proposal – and follow a brief.

· How to use reflection to move forwards.

· How to use evaluative and analytical skills to fulfil creative ambition.

To help structure this assignment, we have set four distinct tasks to be completed and
presented on your Online Digital Journal (Weebly) by the module deadline.

All four tasks must be completed, and your project work must show that you have achieved
the learning outcomes presented on the previous page.

The tasks are as follows:

1. Acquisition Tasks
2. Developmental Projects (Elective No.1)
3. Developmental Projects (Elective No. 2)
4. Self-initiated project and supporting project proposal

You will be prompted by your tutor to engage in a range of themes, processes, and creative
approaches to develop your creative enquiry.

4
More information on the projects and module tasks can be found in Blackboard under
“Umbrella Assignment”

4. Assessment
Assessment will be through a portfolio of practical work, with scope for both Digital/Virtual
outputs and Traditional/physical artefacts built in to the submission process.

Working from your main “Umbrella” assignment you will build a portfolio body of work
over the module run, responding to four distinct project project tasks and utilising and
evidencing your newly acquired skills and growing understanding.

You will be supported in documenting and presenting for assessment all aspects of your
making and production on each project, including ongoing reflection on your experience and
performance and personal evaluation of your growing body of work. At the Assessment point
you will export your online Portfolio journal to a PDF and upload it to an online Submission
folder for Assessment. In addition to clearly presenting your creative decision making and
experimentation you will complete and present connected and contextualized research
activity, ongoing reflective comments and a summative (final) evaluative statement of 500
words.

Students are assessed on a Pass/Fail basis according to their fulfilment of the learning
outcomes in respect of the agreed criteria. The Pass/Fail Assessment Strategy for this module
has been designed to:

1) Establish a more authentic and subject appropriate approach to the

Assessment process which is more aligned to the iterative nature of
creative practice.
2) Establish a less marks driven approach to assessment, providing you
with an opportunity to build confidence and develop individual
approaches to iterative practice and creative risk taking.
3) Remove the emphasis from final Marks, making explicit the role of
feedback in your future learning and progression.

Please access the “Umbrella Assignment” for Developmental Projects which is a separate
document on Blackboard. Here you will find all essential details regarding submission
requirements and relevant information, including an outline of the project briefs and module
tasks which will form the bulk of your submitted portfolio (Alongside technical workshop
reflections, evidence of tutor group activity and your final 500 word evaluative statement)

All work to be assessed must be placed in an organised and logical way on your Foundation
Digital Journal (Weebly).

5
You will then save your Journal pages as a series of PDF’s and upload them to the correct
OneDrive submission folder in advance of the 2pm deadline.
All work to be graded must be uploaded, the links must be all functioning and your final
version must be published in advance of the 2pm deadline on March 14th, 2024.

Further guidance will be provided by your tutor. From 2pm on the date of submission and
you will not be able to access this folder, edit or add content until all student projects
submitted for assessment on this module have been marked by the teaching team.

Submission Date
Formal assessment of this module will take place from 2pm on the 14th of March 2024.

5. Feedback
You will receive informal feedback verbally through all teaching sessions – ensure you listen
carefully. We have placed a mid-module review point in the module schedule – and every
student will be invited to attend a tutorial during which they will receive verbal feedback on
the documentation of projects and tasks undertaken so far and developing project.

Each assessment you submit will be returned to you with written feedback and consists of
comments made by tutors on students’ assessed work which enables students to understand
how they have met the defined assessment criteria and identifying areas for further
improvement. The period for providing feedback will not normally exceed twenty working
days (excluding University closure days) following the deadline for submission of the
assessment concerned. This period may be shorter or longer for some forms of assessment.
Where the period is greater than twenty working days, students will be informed of the
deadline and the rationale for the extension. Outcomes which have not been confirmed by an
examining board shall be considered as unconfirmed.

Date of submission feedback

W/C 22nd April

7. Communication

Throughout your time with us, you will receive regular communication from your module
leaders, and administrative staff. It is your responsibility to ensure that you read everything
that you are sent, and act upon it where appropriate.

The main communication channel used is the Blackboard for all the modules you are
currently studying. Blackboard provides the main communication channel for module
specific information and these too should be checked regularly for new content and
announcements. The recommended amount of time an individual student should spend
accessing learning resources on Blackboard is 3 hours (For a 30-credit module at Level 0). As
part of your module feedback your tutor will provide you with the average time spent on
Blackboard across the full cohort on this module run, and the time you have spent

7
independently accessing material, watching video tutorials, and reading through guides and
toolkits.

Program staff will contact you regularly using your UWE e-mail. Please check your UWE e-
mails at least once a day and respond when necessary.

Please see http://info.uwe.ac.uk/myUWE/guidance/default.asp for further information on all

aspects of your myUWE portal.

8. Advice and Support

There are a range of facilities and services available to go to for advice and support
depending on what the issue is. Remember - asking for help at the earliest possible stage will
help you in the long run. Your first point of call should always be your Academic Personal
Group Tutor, as they will be able to sign post you to the right services and will be able to deal
with specific matters relating to teaching and learning. If you are not able to contact your
Academic Personal Group Tutor for any reason, go to an Information Point, details of which
can be found at http://www1.uwe.ac.uk/students/informationpoints.aspx

Student Support Advisers are available and can also be contacted through the Information
Points, see http://www1.uwe.ac.uk/students/academicadvice/studentadvisers.aspx for
information on how they might be able to help.

However, you are more than welcome to talk to other members of UWE staff depending on
who you feel most comfortable talking to.
