ABSTRACT
The Seyo-Shenan-Guder Road Construction Project presents a critical case study for

of heavy equipment performance and its impact on project outcomes. The results reveal
efficient utilization of excavators and bulldozers, with opportunities for improvement in

need for targeted training and performance management initiatives. Schedule variances
underscore the importance of proactive project management and contingency planning.
Ultimately, this research informs strategies for enhancing heavy equipment utilization

1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background Information

The Seyo-Shenan-Guder Road Construction project is a significant infrastructure initiative


undertaken by the Ethiopian Construction Works Corporation (ECWC) in collaboration
with the Ethiopian Roads Administration. This project aims to upgrade and widen a
91.77km stretch of road in the Western region of Ethiopia, specifically in the Oromia
Regional State, West-Shoa zone. The altitude of the project area ranges from 1550m to
2575m above sea level. The primary objective of this road construction endeavor is to
enhance transportation links, facilitate trade, and promote socio-economic development by
providing better vehicular access between various woredas and supporting investment
initiatives in the region.

Heavy equipment plays a pivotal role in the execution of road construction projects like
Seyo-Shenan-Guder. Equipment such as asphalt pavers, road rollers, excavators, and dump
trucks are essential for tasks like excavation, pavement laying, compaction, and material
transportation. Efficient utilization of heavy equipment is critical for meeting project
deadlines, ensuring productivity, and optimizing resource allocation. However, managing
heavy equipment poses various challenges, including procurement, maintenance, and
operational logistics. Understanding the utilization practices of heavy equipment in the
context of Seyo-Shenan-Guder Road Construction is crucial for identifying areas of

1.2 Problem Statement

The Seyo-Shenan-Guder Road Construction project faces challenges in effectively utilizing


heavy equipment, which impacts project efficiency and performance. These challenges
include suboptimal equipment utilization, inadequate maintenance practices, logistical
constraints, and resource allocation issues. The inefficient utilization of heavy equipment
leads to delays, reduced productivity, increased costs, and potential safety risks, hindering

This chapter mainly consists of the paper methodology applying for the study specifically,
on the paper heavy equipment utilization, explanation of the paper design, participants and
subjects, data collection procedures and statistical methods have been explained.

And also, the findings obtained from the survey questionnaire and additional information
regarding security-related disruptions in the Seyo-Shenan-Guder Road Project will be
presented.

The incidents of equipment damage caused by unknown armed forces mentioned as below:

1. Sino Truck low bed with plate number 4-14839

2. Toyota Pick-Up Double Cabin with plate number 04-14515

3. One dozer and one loader with plate numbers 65310 and LD-0158

4. Komatsu excavator with serial number 46058

These incidents of equipment damage highlight the severity of security-related disruptions


faced during the project. The destruction of valuable project assets not only hinders
progress but also adds significant costs and delays.

5 DISCUSSION

5.1 Interpretation of Results

In interpreting the results of the evaluation of heavy equipment utilization practices in the
Seyo-Shenan-Guder Road Construction Project, several key insights emerge. Firstly, the
high utilization rates of excavators and bulldozers across all construction phases indicate
efficient deployment and effective use of these heavy equipment types, contributing to
