CLAUSES
What is a Clause?
a group of words containing a subject and predicate.

1.The Main Clause is also known as the independent clause. It is a clause that can
stand on its own.It expresses a complete thought.
Example- Raj pressed the button.
Raj - Subject
Pressed the button- Predicate
2.The subordinate Clause is also known as the dependent clause. It is a clause
that can’t stand on its own. It does not express a complete thought.
Example- This is Adi who won the first place in the race.
Concept Check:
State whether the highlighted portion in the following sentence is dependent or
independent.
1. I was working when the fire alarm rang.
2. When I was in London, I liked to visit museums.
3. Although I was scared, I crept inside.
4. Since you say so, I must believe.
5. Our dog will run away if the gate is left open.
