Geographic Midpoint of Metro Manila
If two friends that reside on
both ends of Metro Manila
meet, which part of Metro
Manila is convenient for
both parties?

Distance and Midpoint Formula
DISTANCE Formula
Given two points P(x1, y1) and Q(x2, y2), then the
distance between P and Q is given by the formula
𝐏𝐐 = 𝐱𝟐 − 𝐱𝟏 𝟐 + 𝐲𝟐 − 𝐲𝟏 𝟐
DISTANCE Formula
Use this link to understand the distance formula:
https://www.geogebra.org/m/gdzqhay9
Example #1 (x1, y1) (x2, y2)
Determine the distance between J(-5, 1) and W(3, 7).
JW = 8 2 + 6 2
Simplify.
JW = 64 + 36
JW = 100
JW = 10 The distance between J
and W is 10 units.
Example #2
(x1, y1) (x2, y2)
Determine the distance between H(5, -1) and C(-3, 3).
2 2
Use the distance formula. d= x2 − x1 + y2 − y1
HC = −8 2 + 4 2
Simplify.
HC = 64 + 16
HC = 80
The distance between H
𝐇𝐂 = 𝟒 𝟓 and C is 𝟒 𝟓 units.
MIDPOINT Formula
Given two points P(x1, y1) and Q(x2, y2),
the midpoint M of PQ is given by the formula
𝐱 𝟏 + 𝐱 𝟐 𝐲𝟏 + 𝐲𝟐
M𝐏𝐐
ഥ = ,
𝟐 𝟐
−5 +3 1 +7
Substitute the coordinates of J midpoint = ,
2 2
and W for (x1, y1) and (x2, y2).
−2 8
Simplify. midpoint = ,
2 2
midpoint = −𝟏, 𝟒
5 +(−3) −1 +3
Substitute the coordinates of H midpoint = ,
2 2
and C for (x1, y1) and (x2, y2).
2 2
Simplify. midpoint = ,
2 2
midpoint = 𝟏, 𝟏
The midpoint between H and C
has coordinates 𝟏, 𝟏 .

DISTANCE and MIDPOINT Formula
Instructions:
• The class will be divided into 7 groups. Each group will
be assigned a group number.
• Using a randomizer, the first group will choose a
category. The question will be opened, and all groups
will answer the question.
• The students will raise their answer to the question
using their iPad/whiteboard/paper after the set time.
DISTANCE and MIDPOINT Formula
Instructions:
• The next group (after the group called first) will choose
the next category.
• For every correct answer, the group member will get a
corresponding recitation point. The total score of the
group, divided by 100, will be the recitation point each
group member will get.
Miriam Ideal in Focus
A line, having no beginning or end, can be used to
represent harmony. This harmony can be achieved
once selflessness is applied to oneself and others.
