ATW115 INTRODUCTION TO DATA ANALYTICS SEMESTER 2

ASSIGNMENT BRIEF 2023/2024


TITLE: Data Visualisation Using Excel for Analysis

In this assignment, you will need to apply your Excel skills to analyse and visualise data
related to a specific company. Through this assignment, you will gain practical experience in
data manipulation, visualisation, and interpretation, which are essential skills for business
analysis and decision-making.

Objective:
To develop students' analytical skills in using Excel for data visualisation to represent key
trends and derive meaningful insights to support business decision-making.

Tasks:
1. Dataset Selection: Download a dataset containing financial, operational, or other
relevant data related to a company from Kaggle.com. Register the dataset using the
link provided in eLearn to avoid duplication of dataset. Familiarise yourselves with
the dataset and understand the variables in them.
2. Data Cleaning and Preparation: Import the dataset into Excel and review data for
inconsistencies, missing values, or errors. Clean the data by addressing any issues
identified, such as removing duplicates, filling missing values, or correcting errors.
Organise the data into appropriate columns and rows to facilitate analysis. You can
trim the dataset, but it must consist of at least 200 observations.
3. Data Analysis and Visualisation: Using Excel functions and tools, perform basic
calculations and analysis on the dataset to derive meaningful insights. Create a
variety of visualisations to represent key trends and patterns in the data.
§ Design a retrieval application using a combination of VLOOKUP / MATCH /
INDEX functions.
§ Create THREE different charts, e.g. bar chart, line chart, pie chart, scatter
plot, etc.
§ Design a PivotTable, and use this Table to show/extract information. Visualise
this information using PivotChart.
§ Create data visualisation using ONE of the following methods: data bars,
colour scales, or customised icon sets.
§ Statistical measures using the Descriptive Statistics Tool of one of the
variables.
§ Build a linear regression model. Use this model for a prediction. Show all the
steps involved.
4. Interpretation and Insights: Analyse the visualisations to identify trends, outliers,
and areas of concern or opportunity. Interpret the findings and draw conclusions
about the company’s performance based on the data analysed. Discuss any insights
or recommendations for improvement that can be inferred from the analysis.
5. Presentation of Findings: Prepare a report summarising your analysis and findings.
Provide explanations and interpretations for each task to aid understanding. Clearly
communicate insights and recommendations in a concise manner.

Format of Assignment Report:


The report should be in A4 size, Times New Roman 12pt font, 1.5 line spacing, and one-inch
margins throughout. Please ensure that your report is between 20 to 30 pages, all inclusive.

Deadline:
Upload your Assignment Report and Excel spreadsheet to eLearn by Friday 5pm 21st June
2024. 30% marks will be deducted for late submission!
Upload your Assignment Report and Excel spreadsheet (data and analyses) on eLearn. Save
your report as <Assignment_Grp#.pdf>, and your Excel spreadsheet as <Data_Grp#.xlsx>.
