LECTURE 9 OUTLINE

The Service Area is where the family perform activities such as cooking, laundry or working tools in the
storage or garage.

The main room in the Service area is the Kitchen.

The kitchen is the place or area where

1. Meals are prepared and cooked


2. Food are preserved
3. Food and utensils are stored
4. It’s also a place for eating.
5. Can even be extended to a place for storage or laundry

The kitchen is the most expensive area of the house per square meter.

Has the most active use of any room.

Comparable amount of trip in the preparation of food

1. Kitchen sink 43 to 48%


2. Range 14 to 18%
3. Mixing 12 to 13%
4. Refrigerator is 7 to 8%
5. Dining room is 7 to 8%
6. Dish storage is 6 to 8%
7. Serving is 3 to 6%

For the arrangement, keep in mind :

1. To keep basic working area compact even if the kitchen is of the large type
2. Always consider the possibility that more than one person will be working in the kitchen
3. The arrangement varies according to the size and shape of the space available
4. Remember he relationship as to functions of the different unit area in the kitchen.

For the traffic :

1. Good planning avoid traffic lane at the working areas


2. Plan properly the service entrance to the storage so that traffic that is not essential to food
preparation like servicing or storing can bypass the area.
As for the storage :

1. Kitchen storage design should be functional to minimize reaching up and stooping down.
Storage facilities should be accessible to be reached out by a woman standing both feet on the
floor.
2. Provide sufficient space to store items that are easily seen, reached, grasped and taken down
and returned without excessive strain.
3. With proper planning ,stored items should be located closer to where they are first used.
4. Storage space should be flexible to allow its adjustment to supplies, kinds of food, sizes and
utensils.
5. Shelving must be adjustable.

For counters and working surface :

1. The height of counter and working surfaces should invite comfortable working posture.
2. The worker could sit if she likes to while doing certain kitchen work.
3. Continuous line of the working surfaces provides ease of movement and cleansing of the area.

As for the materials,

The materials and finishes of a kitchen should be properly selected to minimize maintenance and
cleaning. Walls and ceilings should be light in color because it creates a pleasant working atmosphere.

For lighting,

1. Good lighting helps minimize fatigue


2. Good lighting promotes safety and comfortable working place
3. Lighting should be mounted at comfortable level. It should be properly positioned to minimize
shade and shadows throughout the kitchen area.
4. An adequate natural light or artificial lighting will make the room comfortable and attractive
than a poorly lighted room

For ventilation,

The kitchen should be well ventilated and provided with exhaust fan to remove odor.

And for safety and accessibility,

1. All flammable items should be designed out of the kitchen.


2. Sharp corners, exposed handles and control knobs in the kitchen equipment should be avoided.
3. Doors and drawers should be provided with safety catches.
4. Provide accessibility to front and back door, laundry area, telephone and bathroom,

So when designing kitchens, always keep in mind the WORK TRIANGLE

- The work triangle consists of the distance between the refrigerator, sink and range or stove.
- Perimeter of triangle should be less than 670cm.

Laundry Room is for washing, drying, pressing, folding, storing and mending clothes.

Floors should be water resistant

Often located in the basement if there is one because of noise. Some newer houses also build laundry
rooms on the 2nd floor.

Laundry rooms should be provided with :

Sorting table

Heating surface and storage facilities for soiled clothes

Washing supplies and basket

Washing machine and dryer

Ironing board

Laundry tray with 30 centimeters deep for pre-washing soaking or stretching some items.

GARAGE, or a CARPORT.

The difference between the GARAGE and the CARPORT is that the GARAGE is a fully enclosed structure
that include a door and a large shutter that gives you and the vehicle access. While a car port is a
structure that has at least two open sides.

Dimension for one car is 250cm x 500cm or 2.5m by 5meters.
