Paragraphs are essential units of written communication that help

organize and structure ideas within a piece of writing. A paragraph is a

group of sentences that revolve around a central theme or topic. It is
characterized by its coherence, unity, and logical progression. Each
paragraph contributes to the overall flow and clarity of a written piece.
Let's explore the different elements that constitute a paragraph:
Topic Sentence:
The topic sentence serves as the main idea or central point of the
paragraph. It introduces the topic or theme that will be discussed and
sets the tone for the rest of the sentences within the paragraph. The
topic sentence often appears at the beginning of the paragraph,
providing a clear focus and guiding the reader's understanding.
Supporting Sentences:
Supporting sentences follow the topic sentence and provide additional
information, evidence, examples, or explanations to support the main
idea. These sentences elaborate on the topic sentence, presenting
relevant details and arguments. They help to develop and expand upon
the central idea, making the paragraph more coherent and convincing.
Concluding Sentence:
A concluding sentence provides closure to the paragraph by summarizing
the main points or restating the central idea. It helps to reinforce the
paragraph's main message and prepares the reader for the transition to
the next paragraph or section. The concluding sentence should not
introduce new information but rather provide a concise summary or final
thought.
Four basics of Paragraph writing

1. Unity:
Unity in a paragraph means that all sentences within it are focused on
the same central idea or topic. Every sentence should contribute directly
to the development and support of the main idea presented in the topic
sentence. Unity ensures that the paragraph remains concise, focused,
and relevant.
2. Order:
Order in paragraph writing refers to the logical progression of ideas.
Sentences randomly written on a particular topic will not make it a
paragraph. This will be random jotting and won’t make any sense till they
are joined together in manner that makes it sound like an argument.
Therefore, it can be said that order is essential in a particular way so that
the paragraph makes sense to the readers.
3. Coherence:
Coherence refers to the logical and orderly connection between
sentences within a paragraph. It ensures that ideas are presented in a
clear and organized manner, allowing the reader to follow the writer's
thoughts easily. Coherence is achieved through the use of appropriate
transition words, maintaining consistent verb tenses, and employing
logical sequencing of ideas.
4. Completeness:

An idea or an argument should be fully developed within a paragraph. In

other words, the topic sentences should be justifiably given supporting
sentences for the topic sentence to stand upright
