NARRATIVE REPORT
BIRTHDAY GIFT
It was a hot afternoon at school. I was at the oval taking a nap beneath the shade of a
far-off tree. I woke up by the sound of my phone ringing, it's a call from my supervisor
teacher, Ma'am Taryn Kay S. Tabing. At first, I got confused, it's really rare for a
supervisor teacher to call their student teacher on the phone. Besides, why would a
supervisor teacher call their student teacher on the phone? Nevertheless, I picked up
my phone and answered the call perhaps on the third or fourth rung. I greeted my
teacher a good afternoon and ask her why she called. Ma'am Taryn spoke and said,
"Happy Birthday! This is my gift to you. Come here in La Union National Highschool
(LUNHS). This will be the school where you will be deployed for your out-campus
teaching internship, I will wait for your arrival here." I am gladdened by what she said
because the school is just around the City of San Fernando, La Union. The city where
I'm living in. I thank my teacher and she said "welcome" before she ended the call. I
wasted no time celebrating, I immediately get up and called my boys to drive me to
school where my supervisor teacher said because I don't know where the school is. As
usual, my boys are reliable as ever, they drove me to the school, they were like the
ones who sent me off or should I say deployed me to La Union National Highschool.
When I arrive at the place, I met with Ma'am Taryn who is waiting for me at the big
gates of the school. I personally thank her again and she told me to go straight inside
and meet with the other student teacher who also just arrived. Again, I thank my
supervisor teacher and proceeded to do exactly what she instructed. As I entered the
school, I saw how wide the school is. At my North view, I saw the school's big covered
court called the "Amphi Theatre. From my West view, I saw the school's clinic just
behind the guard house. From my East View, I saw the school's canteen where I also
saw the other student teacher. From there, we head straight to the HR office to
register. After we registered, we just took a picture with our La Union National
Highschool team and went home.
WELCOME
The following day, I arrived at La Union National Highschool along with thirteen
student teachers from the Bachelor of Secondary Education in the College of
Education of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU). Although we
are from the same department, we have different majors. There are six English
Majors, four Social Studies Majors, two Math Majors, one Filipino Major, and one
Science Major. The fourteen of us waited downstairs of the principal's office as we are
yet to meet the school's principal and our cooperating teacher. While we were
waiting, we chatted with each other, the normal kind. Something like wishing that the
cooperating teacher is kind and understanding. Time went by like that until the
principal's secretary called us to go upstairs to meet with the principal. Most of us got
really excited, but me, I just wanted the teaching internship to be finished. When we
got upstairs the secretary led us to the guest room and instructed us to wait for the
principal. After a minute or two the principal arrived and gave us a warm smile and
welcomed us. The principal has powerful aura around her but she is really humble.
The way she speaks is kind of like intimidating, perhaps because of her voice, but the
words that comes out of her mouth is soothing. I guess it's true that power is only
given to those people who are willing to lower themselves to pick it up. Going back,
she introduced herself and gave us a wonderful orientation, after which, she called
the cooperating teachers and introduced them one-by-one to us. After the orientation
and introduction, we followed our respective cooperating teacher. My cooperating
teacher is Sir Ferdinand Marc P. Sandoval, he is really kind and understanding, he
doesn't really require me to check the activity sheets of his students, but most of all,
he is brilliant, intelligent, and creative that's why I really look up to him, I really do.
He gave me a tour around the school and to his classes. While we were walking, we
were also talking and introducing ourselves to each other. When we were done
touring, we rest in one of the sheds at the school. My CT told me to just keep calm
and relax before he leaves to attend his classes so that's what I did all through-out the
day.
We are gathered in a wide space just in front of the principal's office building
together with the teachers, OJT students of LUNHS, and, of course, us, the student
teachers of DMMMSU. Everyone is looking so fresh and positive. Each exchange their
greetings with one another with a big smile on their faces. It's the school's culture.
The bell rung and everyone became silent and became snappy-looking. The merry
moment disappeared and a serious moment appeared. I can see from everyone their
respect and love for the country as we begin our flag ceremony. We sung, pledged,
and exercised. The flag ceremony was long but even though it's that long, everyone
remained snappy looking. After the flag ceremony, we went to our respective
departments. I search for my CT in the English department because it is the start of
my observation. I found him and let him know that I will be observing his classes
starting today for one week as instructed. My CT who is always calm told me to keep
calm and just wait for him in front of the classroom room of his class five minutes
before the starting time. It is almost time for my CT's class so I went and wait for him
in front of the classroom of his class. We entered the class together and the students
greeted us. As soon as we sat down, I immediately grab my pen and paper so I could
take note of my observations of my cooperating teacher. While observing my
cooperating teacher, I noticed that there is a big difference of how my cooperating
teacher handle the class like how his PowerPoint Presentation contains a lot of clues.
After we are done with his classes, we sat again in one of the sheds at the school. We
had a little conversation of my observations. I said what I learned from him today
from observing him and he asked me to send him some lesson plans and PPT that I
made so that's what I did when I got home.
TERRIFIC TUESDAY
It's early in the morning. I was waiting for my teacher in front of the faculty of the
English department. When he was settled on his table, I ask him about the lesson plan
and PPT that I sent him. He told me that the lesson plan and PPT that I sent him were
alright so he asked me to write a lesson plan. He will send the topics later, he added.
After we were done talking, I thanked my CT and went out of the faculty to prepare
my things because today is the second day of my observation. Just like yesterday, I
observed how my CT handled his classes in the morning. In the afternoon, my CT sent
me all the topics that I could teach, then, I spent the rest of the day doing my LP.
WEEK 2 DAY 3 (WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6)
WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY
Today I printed out my first LP that I have sent to my CT at 3:12 A.M. I'm so sure that
he was not able to check it at that time, well, I it's my fault for sending it to him at
dawn. Anyway, my topic is about Social Issues. During that time, I feel kind of nervous
to show my LP to my CT because he's so great at teaching. He set the standard to his
classes. His students are always excited for his class and I don't want to lower
that/their excitement. When I got the chance to talk to my CT, I showed him my LP.
He told me to just keep calm, he will call back after he finished reading my LP. I went
to our respective place just in front the faculty room of the English department and
prepared myself. After like 30 minutes, my CT called inside the faculty to tell his
feedback about my LP. We sat on the meeting table. I remembered my CT told me
that my is good. However, it is not for Grade 8 students. "Haan mo met ah parigaten
dagijay ubbing unay." Those were the exact words that he told me. Put some clue like
pictures or jumbled letters on the questions that you want them to answer and
present them on the PPT, he suggested. While he's telling me his feedback, I told him
that I was used to making my lesson plan for senior high school students. There, he
advised me and gave me suggestions on how will I revise my LP and make my PPT.
When were done, I thanked him and started revising my LP and passed it immediately
to him. He approved my LP and told me to have my first demonstration teaching on
the following day. In the afternoon, I used the remaining time to browse my
observations on how he teaches. I also used the time to learn his style and visualize
myself on his shoes when he's teaching. Another day went by just like that.
TRANQUIL THURSDAY
NORMAL DAY
These two days were just a normal day at La Union National High school. In fact, I had
no particular things to do... That is what I would like to say. However, that is not the
case. In the evening of March 12, 2024, I received a message from my CT informing
me all advisors will have a meeting at 9:00 A.M. onwards so he rescheduled my third
teaching demonstration on Thursday because my first class is 9:15 A.M. to 10:05 and
my second class is 10:05 to 10:55. I replied to him agreeing to what he said and asked
him what should I do tomorrow. He replied saying I will just facilitate all of his classes
tomorrow. In addition, he also said that he will leave the activities for his classes on
his table tomorrow. "That's all for the flashback." Going back, I did what my CT had
told me to do. I attend to all of his classes and facilitated them doing their activity
that my CT prepared for them. It is a wonderful experience to me because I was
really able to see that there is a diversity in each classroom and diversity among
students. Meanwhile, in my free time, I would open my laptop and review my next LP
and practice. That's how my day went. The following day, my CT had was away. He
accompanied the contestant of the school to a competition because he is their coach.
Like what I did yesterday, I just facilitated his classes and did my CT's daily corridor
duty. Just like that, a Terrific Tuesday and a Wonderful Wednesday is once again
finished.
A NORMAL WEEK
EXAMS
Today is the start of the two days exam of the students, it's also the start of
the "Holy Week," Today, there's no particular things that my CT told me to do.
However, since I'm a ST I must keep myself busy. This time I no longer go to our
respective space to do my business. With the addition of UCC and SLC, the space
become crowded and loud so I adjusted. I choose to go to the library because it I'm
not really a people person and since the library is a much quiet place than in front of
the library. Ever since, I go straight immediately to the library when I'm done with my
biometrics. The library is the place where I do my things like LP, book, and research.
Just like that, Monday and Tuesday went by.
On this day, the students didn't do anything that much that also includes us,
STs. The exam has just finished. Most students are just checking their test papers.
Since my CT doesn't really require me to check students' test-papers I got more time
to prepare again for my next lesson. At 9:00 A.M, we conducted an earthquake drill.
All of us, students, teachers, and staffs. gathered in the school oval even though it's
hot. We stayed for like five minutes before we returned back to our respective places.
After that, I just did my research and finish my LP. That's how my day went.
WEEK 6 DAY 1 - 2(MONDAY - TUESDAY, APRIL 1 - 2)
A NEW DAY
A new day for the start of the month. Today is somehow special, why? It is April
1, Monday, It also "April Fool's Day." Just like every Mondays we gather to attend our
flag ceremony. This time we conducted the flag ceremony at the Amphi Theatre and
not in the school ground. This day I focused on just doing preparing and doing my LP
all throughout the day since my CT didn't require or ask me to check papers. The
following day, I also had no particular things to do but since I'm an ST I must keep
myself busy so I just continued on my book and action research. Just how my days
went these past two days.
ANOTHER ONE
Among the lessons I have thought, this one is the lesson that I am most nervous
of. Today is my fourth teaching demonstration and I'm feeling nervous. This is my first
time to teach grammar. I'm not saying that I don't know my grammar. It's just that I
don't really know how to teach grammar. I'm wondering how can I teach grammar.
What approach should I do? Anyway, even though I was nervous I was able to
successfully deliver my lesson the only problem is that my PPT failed to load in my
second class because the internet is slow at school. Nevertheless, I was able to finish
the lesson. This time I felt that I failed teaching because of what happened and I'm
correct. During my pros and con my CT asked me what happened. I told him my PPT
failed to load because I was using CANVA. He told me to use PPT if not I will have to
do some traditional IMs so I agreed to what he suggested. After the pros and con, I
spent time learning how to use PPT for my next lesson. Just like that, another day is
finished.
TIRED
On this day, my CT once again asked me to facilitate his classes so it's what I
did for the day. I also did my corridor duty at the English building. When I'm not doing
something, I'm at the library doing my things. Being a graduating student is really
hard, you won't have time to eat your breakfast. Most of the time, you're even willing
not to eat dinner just to finish your staffs. I remember when I was at the library, I
didn't notice that I drunk my one liter of water in one go because of how hungry I was.
That's when I realized that what I'm doing is not healthy, but what can I do? what can
a normal man do? all my homies started asking what's the matter with me and my
body? Perhaps getting thin is just normal for graduating students. No cap. I'm starting
to feel stomach aches during this time. Anyway, that's how my day went.
ONE DAY
For this week, we didn't have any classes for three days starting from Monday
to Wednesday, that's from April 8 to April 10. We on only went to the school on
Thursday because there's a lot of celebration on the past days that's why we didn't
have any classes. Unfortunately, when I went to school that Thursday, my CT is not
there but he left me some activities for the students to do while he was away.
Therefore, all I did this day was to facilitate the students after I give them their
activities. In addition, I also finished my daily corridor duty.
ASYNCHRONOUS LEARNING
For the first two days of week 8, we don't have class face-to-face because of
the high heat index. In other words, it's a suspension of face-to-face classes as
announced by DepEd. We don't have any choice but to comply so my cooperating
school decided to have an asynchronous learning and since my CT didn't ask me to do
anything these two days of asynchronous learning, I used this time to do my other
school activities at my school. I continued doing my portfolio, narrative, and
research. That's what I did for these two days.
GETTING ALONG
Yesterday, in the evening my CT had already that he's on leave today. This
means that I will be facilitating all of his classes today again. Of course, that's fine
with me. It's not really that of a burden to facilitate his classes, it's actually the
opposite because my CT always prepares everything that the students will need to do
before filing a leave or even if his presence is needed somewhere. One thing that I
also like is I'm starting to build rapport with the students of all of his classes since I
often meet them when my CT is not at school. One time two teachers form the
faculty of the English department approached me and said "We were shocked when
we pass over Sir Ferdinand's advisory class because the students were surprisingly
quiet despite without Sir Ferdinand's presence, we are surprised when we saw you
facilitating his classes." Anyway, all I did today is facilitate the classes and do my
other school activities.
Starting yesterday we had a new class schedule. Today I had to come to school
two hours earlier than before due to the high heat index. Getting up early is not a
struggle for me at all. As matter of fact, I only sleep 3-2 hours a night. Sometimes, I
don't even sleep at all. The problem is getting water the water that I will use to bath
myself. Well, since the weather is really hot it's expected that the well will be dry. I'm
just asking for water from the neighbors but it didn't last long since their well is also
starting dry up and the water inside is just enough to supply them. That is my
problem to solve. Nevertheless, I'm still managing to go to school despite the
situation. Today, my team and me begun plotting the schedule of our final teaching
demonstration. After our meeting, I did my lesson plan for my next demo teaching
and continue where I left of on my other school activities. That's how I spent the day.
SORE EYES
Last week Friday, I visit the clinic at DMMMSU because my eyes felt very
strange when I woke up. My eyes felt like it's bulky and I can't open it and when I look
at the mirror it's really red, there's a many big pieces of white "muta" in my eyes. I
panicked so I went straight to the sink to try to wash it off but there's no water so I
used the drinking water to wash it off but even after I washed it off, It's still really
hard to open it and It still feels bulky. I still went to school. When I'm at school I
decided to go to the clinic to just to get some eye patch. That is just what's on my
mind. However, when I arrived at the clinic the doctor said I have a sore eyes and
advised me to go home. I talk to My ST and went straight home after. Therefore, I was
absent these two days. My guess is I had the sore eyes because there's no abundant
water to wash myself and it's hot.
CAREFUL
I felt a little better now. My eyes isn't that much red and bulky anymore. I felt
relief on my eyes so I already went back to school, of course, with the approval of the
school doctor at DMMMSU. Although I felt a little better, I'm still careful not to get in
contact with other people at school, especially the students so I just stayed at one
place to avoid contact. Most of the time I spend my time at the library doing my
lesson plan and other school activities. That's what I did for the whole day. Just like
that, another day is done.
After I recovered from my sore eyes, I'm ready to teach again. Probably today is
the last time I'm going to teach because we are scheduling our final demo and the
dates are not pretty not sure so anytime we will have our final demo teaching
because the supposed date that we planned was not followed because of some issues
that's how we got into this situation. Since it's probably the last day of my demo
teaching I informed my CT beforehand to get permission to gather data again for my
action research and he approved. I also asked my CT if my groupmates could come
and join and he also agreed. I executed my demo teaching while my groupmates
gather data. After my demo teaching, I thanked my CT and get back on working on my
action research. Just like that, another day is finished.
HELP
This week we only went to school once because the DepEd announced that
April 29 and 30 will Asynchronous learning that's why we had no in-person class and
May 1 is labor day, it's a national holiday that's why we also have no classes. On May 2,
Thursday, that's the only time we went to school. We helped in preparing for an
upcoming event and a one week seminar for teachers. That's what we did for the
whole day. Just like that, another day is finished.
LAST WEEK
This week is our last week at La Union National Highschool. However, we are
more worried than excited or sentimental because we still have no date for our final
demo. These two days we spend our time talking with our cooperating school and our
school to meet at an available time where we could execute our final demonstration
teaching. On the last week, that is the only time where we were able to finalize the
date for our final demo which is on May 8. After we secured that date my team and
me spent the time preparing for our final teaching demonstration. That's what we did
these two days. Just like that, these two days is finished.
FINAL
Day I'm I've been expecting is finally here. It's been a long time coming. When I
arrived at school us, STs, were all busy. I put down my things and double checked my
things, especially the instructional material that I had prepared. After, I put down my
things I secured the simple meal I prepared for my panels and started to prepare my
things. I haven't got enough sleep, I've been preparing for this. The only thing that's
on my mind is "I hope I could sleep after this." I'm so tired. Not in the saddle, but in
the mind. I can feel that my journey at La Union National Highschool is about to be
finished yet the battle in my mind is far from finished. I know that there's a lot of
work that needs to be done after this. Before I entered the classroom one last time, I
clear up my mind and focused on what's about to happen. Just after I finished setting
up my IM's my panel arrived. Without having to wipe my sweat and pull down my
shirt, I started immediately right after they sat down without any hesitation. I applied
all the things I have learned and heed my CT's advices. The rest is history. After my
final teaching demonstration, we just had a little group picture with my students and
with my panel including my CT. I was so grateful to my students. One last time, before
I leave the room I looked at my students and thanked them from the bottom of my
heart. When we are now settled together, I had my last pros and con with my CT. It's
his congratulations that made me feel that I'm finally finished. With just one word, I
felt so much rest. I slept the rest of the day.
