SYNOPSIS
A mime in Mumbai lives a cyclical, lonely, and monotonous life due to his mute condition. He enjoys
performing and reading books, and has a friend who lends him books to read. He lives a routine life where
he performs and travels throughout the day. One day, a man criticizes his performance and calls it too
fictitious, but he decides to ignore it. After this interaction, he finds a chit in his collected cash. This chit
is a signal that someone is trying to talk to him. This is the first time something like this has ever happened
to him. For the first time someone has shown interest in him.
Later, he sees a strange man in a black coat who is reading the same book as he was, from which he
devised his mime act for today. He decides to follow this man as he believes he is trying to talk to him
and might have some answers for him. This small decision leads him on a journey where he witnesses
events that change his view of the world. The mime finds chits dropped by this mysterious stranger that
contain lessons about the events he witnesses, including a flashback to his own life where he wears a
happy mask to cover his inner feelings. He meets an old man who helps him out of trouble and later learns
that he is a puppeteer who makes kids laugh with a joyous puppet act. Though that is only as it seems on
the surface as he later discovers that behind this old street performer’s happy mask, lays a frowning face
not much different than his own.
Through all the events of his journey, he is bought back to the same place where he began his life as a
performer. It completes an old memory for him which reminds him why he started in the first place.
Through all the events of the story, he realises that he must break through his monotonous cycle and start
his artistic journey anew.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Inspired by the work and life story of legendary French mime artist Marcel Marceau, Chits is a human
story about making a change. The film is treated incorporating the ideas of the "Theatre of the Absurd",
pointing out how absurd day to day life can be and yet how we can still find beauty in it.
Similar to the story’s protagonist, we often feel stuck as if in a cyclical loop yearning for a change or a
restart. In some way or the other, all of us can empathise with each other asserting that we all go through
life in a similar fashion, facing struggles and fighting our way to reach our destination or said purpose.
The film is not just the story of one person but the story of a whole city where if you pay attention, you
can find infinite fascinating stories all around you. Just like Marceau’s art, this film is all about the idea
that simple events have all the answers that one needs, there is just the need to look.
