CHAPTER 2: DESIGN WAREHOUSE

2.1. Warehouse location

In the southern region, Acecook has 7 manufacturer plants in Binh Duong, Ho Chi
Minh City and Vinh Long. After careful consideration and research on the location to
place Vina Acecook's warehouse under the assumption of the situation, the location that
we choose is: Tan Tao Industrial Zone (Tan Tao A Ward, Tan Binh District, Ho Chi
Minh City).
Reasons for choosing Tan Tao Industrial zone:
 Because it is located in an industrial park, it is supported with labor costs and
leased land to build a factory to help reduce investment costs.
 Only about 8km from the cluster of 3 factories in the HCM area, so it is quite
convenient for transporting goods from the factory to the warehouse.
 It is an area with the most convenient traffic conditions in the southern key
industrial region.
+ Located on the highway connecting the southwestern provinces
+ Near the Asian highway – the trade road in the Southeast provinces and ASEAN
region.
+ 15 km from Saigon Port
+ 12 km from Tan Son Nhat International Airport
+ 14km from Saigon station
 Besides, around Tan Tao industrial park, there are many wholesale markets,
hospitals, schools, residential areas, shopping centers and neighboring industrial
zones.
=>Therefore, placing Acecook's warehouse here will bring a lot of great benefits to the
company instead of being located in other areas.
1. Receiving area + Shipping area

Assuming there are 9 10-ton trucks arriving to distribution center daily basis. The 10-ton
load vehicle is a winged tank and can carry 15 pallets of 1200mm x 1000m x 150mm,
therefore, each shift have 3 trucks come (15 * 3= 48 pallets) The job is from 8am - 17pm
and temporarily stored in the receiving area.

Description of calculations

Number of received goods per day 1500 boxes

Number of received goods per shift 500 boxes
Number of shifts 3 shifts
Number of pallets for each shift 500/ 12= 42 pallets
Number of rotations 1 time
Number of temporarily-storage pallets 42/1 = 42 pallets
Area of temporarily-storage pallets (1.2 * 1) * 42 =50.4 ~51 𝑚2
The area aisles and that of the goods 51*40% = 20.1~ 21 m2
inspection (were set to be 40% of the area of
the temporary-storage pallets)
Area of backup area (10% of the area of the 51*10% = 5.1~ 6 m2
temporary-storage pallets)
Receiving area space 51+ 21+ 6 = 78 m2
Shipping area space = Receiving area space 78 m2

2. Storage area: Goods are arranged according to FIFO rules.

Because we build the warehouse as a distribution center, therefore, goods are only stored
for a short time before being shipped to customers. We will assume the received goods’
in one-day will be shipped out in the next 14 days. We will use the total number of pallets
received in 1 day and then multiply it by 14 to get the maximum number of pallets that
need to be stored. This assumption is consistent with the high turnover rate of a
distribution center as well as the saving of warehouse space.

Description of calculations
The total number of pallets received in 1 day 42*3=126 pallets

The number of pallets received in 14 days 126*14 = 1764 pallets

Number of racks required for storage area when 1764/ (5*10) = 36 racks
using Flowing rack 5 level
Area for the required number of racks 36* [1.5*(1.15*10)] = 594
m2
We will install a conveyor belt connecting between sorting area and storage area in
both receiving area and storage area to serve store and handle cargo in the
distribution center. Besides, we use pallet live storage system to minimize storage
area and increase productivity in handling goods.

Because we use pallet live storage system cooperating with conveyor belt to store
goods, aisles in storage area are eliminated, we just need main aisles to make room
for reach trucks operating, loading, and unloading cargo into the pallet live storage
system in both receiving area and shipping area. Pallet live storage system has 10
rows, each rows 5 floors, and the capacity of a racket is 50 pallets.

3. Sorting area:

Sorting and shipping area is set to be 20-25% of total warehouse space, width of
sorting and shipping area is 20 m. Space for sorting area: 20%* (594+ 78*2) = 150
m2. We will divide this space into two separate spaces. This means that sorting
area will display in two area: receiving area and shipping area to ensure that RFID
and bar codes technic can be easy to manage and control flow of goods.

In the middle of the sorting area, we will install a conveyor belt which connect to
pallet live storage system in storage area. This area occupies 2.4m* 5m = 12m2.
Therefore, total area for conveyor belt in both sides of sorting area is 24 m2.

Total space for sorting area: 150+ 24= 174 m2.

4. Main aisle:

We just use reach trucks to load and unload goods from conveyor belt to pallet live
storage systems as reach trucks can reach to 12.5 m.

We have 3 main aisles cover around storage area, each main aisles occupy 4 m to
help reach trucks can be easy to operate, load and unload goods. The space for
main aisles is 4*3= 12m2
5. Truck staging area

We use trucks and 20’ containers to transport and delivery goods, the truck berth
needs an approximately 7 m of width, and space for a truck staging area is 7*30=
210 m2.

Total truck staging area is 210*2= 420 m2.

6. Other space and amenities:

- Rest space: 1500- (78*2)- 594-174- 12-420= 144 m2

- Office space: 64 m2

- Equipment room: 50 m2

- WC room: 15 m2

- Electricity room: 15 m2
