Why is this significant in traffic engineering and road design?
(4 marks )

(e) Using either of the formulae below, calculate the difference in stopping
distance for vehicles travelling at 50 km/h and at 60 km/h on a level road.
Assume the value of the coefficient of longitudinal deceleration to be 0.50
and reaction time to be 2.0 seconds. What is the significance of the
additional stopping distance?
SD = RTv + v2 / 2 gd or
SD = RT V/ 3.6 + V2 / 254 d
(4 marks)

(f) What is the desirable level of service to achieve on opening day when
designing a signalised intersection? What level of service would it be
desirable to still have after the intersection has been functioning for 10
years? In an intersection design, which of the two levels is more important
to be designing for and why?

QUESTION 2 GEOMETRIC DESIGN (Total 20 marks)

(a) A right-turning SCS curve is to be fitted between two straights with a

deviation angle of 40o.. The spiral (transition) length is 70 m and the
radius of the circular portion approximately 600 m.
The route mileage (station distance) of the intersection point of the
two straights is 2,794.670 m.

(i) Determine the unit chord length in metres.

(1mark)

(ii) Express the spiral length in terms of unit chords.

(1 mark)

(iii) From the Unit Chord Chart supplied Figure 2.3

select appropriate data and calculate the following
properties in metres
Radius R
Shift Distance K
Shift P
Spiral Angle θ (4 marks)

(iv) Calculate the total Tangent distance and length of

the Circular Curve.
Hence or otherwise determine the Route mileage of
the key points TS, SC.CS & ST for the curve.
(6 marks)

(v) If the rate of application of superelevation is 2.5 % / sec

and design speed is 100 km/hr, what is design
superelevation for this curve . (2 marks)

(b) A summit vertical curve joins a grade of +4.6% to a grade of

-2.5%. The Gradients intersect at Route Distance 3,500m and
Reduced Level 150.00m.
(i) If the Vertical Curve parameter K is 210, determine the length
of the curve and hence the route distances and levels at the (3 marks)
start and end of the curve.

(ii) A footbridge crosses the line of the road at route distance =

3,600 m . Determine the level of the footbridge deck if
a 6m vertical clearance from curve level is required.

(b) Name and briefly describe FOUR key components that make up
an Urban street Drainage system (4 marks)

(c ) A culvert under the road has a headwater level of 2.2m, if the catchment
area is 12 ha, with a average runoff co=efficient C of 0.75 and rainfall
intensity of 95 mm/hr, using the rational method determine the peak flow
