7 MUST KNOW QUESTIONS TO CONQUER

HCF & LCM

1 (a) Express the numbers 198 and 264 as a product of their prime factors.
(b) Find the largest integer which is both a factor of 198 and 264.
(c) Find the smallest positive integer value of 𝑛 for which 198𝑛 is a multiple of 264.

Ans: (a) 198 = 2 × 32 × 11, 264 = 23 × 3 × 11 (b) 66 (c) 𝑛 = 4

2 The numbers, A and B, expressed as products of their prime factors are given below.
𝐴 = 25 × 32 × 5 × 172 𝐵 = 24 × 33 × 72 × 173
(a) Find the LCM of A and B in index notation
(b) Find the smallest integer C such that 𝐵 × 𝐶 is a perfect square.
(c) Find the smallest integer D such that 𝐵 × 𝐷 is a multiple of A.

Ans: (a) 𝐿𝐶𝑀 = 25 × 33 × 5 × 72 × 173 (b) 𝐶 = 51 (c) 𝐷 = 10

3 (a) Express 132 and 42 as product of prime factors

(b) Find the smallest integer, 𝑘, such that 132𝑘 is a perfect cube.
(c) Find the smallest positive integer, 𝑛, such that 42𝑛 is a multiple of 132.

Ans: (a) 132 = 22 × 3 × 11, 42 = 2 × 3 × 7 (b) 2178, (c) 𝑛 = 22

4 (a) Express 4200 as the product of its prime factors.

(b) Find the smallest integer 𝑛 such that 4200𝑛 is a perfect square.
(c) Written as products of their prime factor, the HCF and LCM of the numbers 4200 and 𝑥 are given
below.

HCF = 22 × 3 × 5 and LCM = 23 × 33 × 5 × 11

Express 𝑥 as the product of its prime factors.

Ans: (a) 23 × 3 × 52 (b) 𝑛 = 42 (c) 22 × 33 × 5 × 11

5 When written as a product of their prime factors,

1500 = 22 × 3 × 53
