Introduction

Analog multimeters use a micro ammeter with a moving pointer to

display readings. Digital multimeters (DMM, DVOM) have numeric
displays and have made analog multimeters virtually obsolete as they
are cheaper, more precise, and more physically robust than analog
multimeters. Multimeters vary in size, features and price. An
analog multimeter is a permanent magnet moving coil (PMMC) meter
type measuring instrument. It works on the principle of d’Arsonval
galvanometer. A digital multimeter (DMM) is a measuring
instrument used to measure various electrical quantities. A multimeter
is a measuring instrument that can measure multiple electrical
properties. A typical multimeter can measure voltage, resistance
and current, in which case it is also known as a volt-ohm-
milliammeter (VOM), as the unit is equipped with voltmeter, ammeter
and ohmmeter unctionality. Some feature the measurement of a
additional properties such as temperature and capacitance.
Analog multimeter:
An analog multimeter is a permanent magnet moving coil (PMMC)
meter type measuring instrument. It works on the principle of
D’Arsonval galvanometer. The analog multimeter has an analog
display that uses the deflection of a pointer on the scale to indicate the
level of measurement being made. The pointer deflects from its initial
position increasingly as the measuring quantity increase.

Working:
Since, the analog multimeter is a PMMC types instrument, so when a
current is passed through its coil, the coil moves in a magnetic field
produced by the permanent magnet. A pointer is attached with the
coil. When current flows in the coil, a deflecting torque acts on the
coil that will rotate it by an angle, so the pointer moves over a scale.
A pair of hairsprings is attached to the spindle to provide the
controlling torque.
Specification of analog multimeter:
1.Isolated – DC/AC Voltage, current, resistance diode voltage, diode
continuity,

2.non-isolated - capacitance, inductance function.

3.Isolated level - function isolation.

4.Resolution - 4.5 digitals.

5.Input impedance - 10 MΩ.

Digital multimeter:
A digital multimeter (DMM) is a measuring instrument used to
measure various electrical quantities. The standard measurements that
are performed by a DMM are current, voltage and resistance. Apart
from these, a digital multimeter can also measure temperature,
frequency, capacity, transistor gains etc.

Working:
 Display − The DMM has an illuminated display screen for better
visualization. Most DMM have four-digit display, the first of
which can only be either a 0 or 1 and a + / - indication as well.
There may also be some more indicators like AC / DC etc.
 Connection Ports − There are three or four ports available on
the front of the DMM. However, only two are needed at a time.
Typical ports of the DMM are −
 Dial (Selection Knob) − There is a rotary switch to select the
types of measurement to be made and range that is needed.
 Additional Connections − There are some additional
connections in DMM for other measurements like temperature,
transistor gains etc.
 Additional Buttons and switches − There are a few additional
buttons are present in a DMM. The main one is ON/OFF button.

Specification:

Isolated- DC /AC Voltage, current, resistance, diode voltage, diode

continuity.

Non-isolated- Capacitance, induction function.

Resolution- 4.5 digital.

Input impedance- 10MΩ.

Applications:
For Analog Multimeter:

1. Used to measure and test different electrical quantities.

2. Used in engines/chassis with limited space
3. To test battery
4. Measurement of time and frequency

For Digital multimeter:

1. Low battery indicator.

2. Electrical maintenance and troubleshooting of appliances
3. Measuring output at motor terminals
4. Troubleshooting simple circuits

Conclusion
Overall, digital multimeters are much easier to read and
provide more accurate readings. These days many
analog multimeters are a thing of the past, and many
professionals choose to use digital multimeters. Digital
multimeter beginner-friendly is also the reason why
many colleges and universities learn toward this route.
Hopefully, this article has explained the difference
between the two multimeters and will be helpful when
shopping for a multimeter.
