TRANSDUCERS AND ITS APPLICATIONS
Paper–ECO-8A

Time : Three Hours] [Maximum Marks : 75

Note : Attempt five questions in all, selecting at least one

question from each Unit.

UNIT–I

1. (a) Draw the block diagram showing the basic functional

elements of instrument and explain the function of each.
7
(b) Explain how an instrument is calibrated. Explain in detail
calibration technique and draw the calibration curve in
general. 8

2. (a) Explain selection criteria of transducer. 8

(b) Explain Hall effect. What does polarity of Hall effect
voltage indicate? Explain any two applications of Hall
effect as sensors. 7

UNIT–II

3. (a) What are force summing devices? Briefly explain any

three. 7
(b) Explain with neat diagram absolute pressure, Gauge
pressure, Atmospheric Pressure and Vacuum pressure.
Explain different pressure measurement using U-tube
Manometer. 8

4. Write the working principle of thermistor. Explain NTC type
semiconductor thermal resistor. A platinum thermometer has
a resistance of 100 W at 25°C. Find its resistance at 65°C if
platinum has a resistance temperatre coefficient of
0.00392/°C. If the thermometer then has a resistance of 150
W, calculate temperature. 15

UNIT–III

5. Explain how capacitive transducers can be used for

displacement measurement? Also mention advantages and
disadvantages of capacitive transducers. A capacitive
transducer uses two quartz diaphragms of area 750 mm2
separated by a distance of 3.5 mm. A pressure of
900 kN/m2 when applied to the top diaphragm produces a
deflection of 0.6 mm. The capacitance is 370 pF when no
pressure is applied to the diaphragms. Find the value of
capacitance after the application of a pressure of 900
kN/m2. 15

6. (a) With neat figure explain LVDT for displacement

measurement. 7
(b) Explain the working principle of photoelectric
tachometer. 8

UNIT–IV

7. (a) Draw a neat and clean diagram showing use of strain

guage as load cell. Explain the principle. 7

(b) What is LVDT transducer? How can it be used to
measure force? Describe with the help of diagram. 8

8. (a) Explain the working principle of inductive transducer.

How can it be used for torque measurement ? 8
(b) What is a torque meter? How does it work? 7
