THE THREE ANGEL’S MESSAGE, THE EVERLASTING GOSPEL

WHAT IS THE GREATEST WORK OF MOST SOLEMN IMPORT OF SDA

In a special sense Seventh-day Adventists have been set in the world *as watch men and light
bearers*. To them has been entrusted the last warning for a perishing world. On them is shining
wonderful light from the Word of God. They have been given a work of the most solemn import--
*the proclamation of the first, second, and third angels' messages*. There is no other work of so
great importance. They are to allow nothing else to absorb their attention.--9T 19 (1909). {LDE

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO US IF WE PROVE UNFAITHFUL TO THIS GREAT WORK

*When a church proves unfaithful to the word of the Lord*, whatever their position may be,
*however high and sacred their calling*, the Lord can no longer work with them. *Others
are then chosen to bear important responsibilities*. But, if these in turn do not purify their lives
from every wrong action, if they do not establish pure and holy principles in all their borders,
then the Lord will grievously afflict and humble them and, unless they repent, will remove them
from their place and make them a reproach.--14MR 102 (1903). {LDE 59.2}
The Lord Jesus will always have a *chosen people to serve Him*. When the Jewish people rejected
Christ, the Prince of life, He took from them the kingdom of God and gave it unto the Gentiles. * God
will continue to work on this principle with every branch of His work*. {LDE 59.1}
ARE WE PREACHING THE THREE ANGES MESSAGE TODAY?

The first and second messages were given in 1843 and 1844, and we are now under the
proclamation of the third; but all three of the messages are still to be proclaimed. It is just as essential
now as ever before that they shall be repeated to those who are seeking for the truth . By pen and
voice we are to sound the proclamation, showing their order, and the application of the
prophecies that bring us to the third angel's message. There cannot be a third without the first and
second. These messages we are to give to the world in publications, in discourses, showing in the
line of prophetic history the things that have been and the things that will be. {2SM 104.3}

WHAT IS THE EVERLASTING GOSPEL

REV 14:6-7 6And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to
preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people.

Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come:
and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
ECC 12:13-14. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his
commandments: for this [is] the whole [duty] of man.14 For God shall bring every work into
judgment, with every secret thing, whether [it be] good, or whether [it be] evil.

WHAT IS TO FEAR GOD?

Prob 8:13. The fear of the LORD [is] to hate evil: PRIDE, and ARROGANCY, and the evil way,
and the froward mouth, do I hate.
Prov 16:6. By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD [men] depart from
evil.
PRIDE A DEADLY DISEASE AMONG GOD’S PEOPLE

Now pride and envy closed the door against the light. If the reports brought by the shepherds and
the wise men were credited, they would place the priests and rabbis in a most unenviable
position, disproving their claim to be the exponents of the truth of God. These learned teachers
would not stoop to be instructed by those whom they termed heathen. It could not be, they said, that
God had passed them by, to communicate with ignorant shepherds or uncircumcised Gentiles. They
determined to show their contempt for the reports that were exciting King Herod and all Jerusalem.
They would not even go to Bethlehem to see whether these things were so . And they led the
people to regard the interest in Jesus as a fanatical excitement. Here began the rejection of Christ by
the priests and rabbis. From this point their pride and stubbornness grew into a settled hatred of the
Saviour. While God was opening the door to the Gentiles, the Jewish leaders were closing the door to
themselves. {DA 62.4}
There is to be in the [Seventh-day Adventist] churches a wonderful manifestation of the power of
God, but it will not move upon those who have not humbled themselves before the Lord, and
opened the door of the heart by confession and repentance. In the manifestation of that power
which lightens the earth with the glory of God, they will see only something which in their
blindness they think dangerous, something which will arouse their fears, and they will brace
themselves to resist it… Because the Lord does not work according to their ideas and expectations
they will oppose the work. "Why," they say, "should we not know the Spirit of God, when we
have been in the work so many years?“ … The third angel's message will not be comprehended,
the light which will lighten the earth with its glory will be called a false light, by those who
refuse to walk in its advancing glory. {Last Day Events, p. 210}
HOW CAN WE LEARN TO FEAR GOD?

Prov 2:1-5, 10-12. 1My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;

So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, [and] apply thine heart to understanding; 3Yea, if thou
criest after knowledge, [and] liftest up thy voice for understanding; 4If thou seekest her as silver,
and searchest for her as [for] hid treasures; 5Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and
find the knowledge of God.10When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant
unto thy soul; 11Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:12To deliver thee from
the way of the evil [man], from the man that speaketh froward things;

The book that was sealed was not the book of Revelation, but that portion of the prophecy of Daniel
that related to the last days. . . . When the book was opened, the proclamation was made, “Time shall
be no longer.” The book of Daniel is now unsealed, and the revelation made by Christ to John is to
come to all the inhabitants of the earth. By the increase of knowledge a people is to be prepared to
stand in the latter days. {CTr 338.4}
WHEN DOESTHE INCREASE OF KNOWLEDGE COME TO GOD’S PEOPLE?

Daniel 12:4.But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, [even] to the time of the end:
many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased
Daniel12:9And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words [are] closed up and sealed till the time
of the end.10Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do
wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.
“No such message has ever been given in past ages. Paul, as we have seen, did not preach it; he
pointed his brethren into the then far-distant future for the coming of the Lord. The Reformers did not
proclaim it. Martin Luther placed the judgment about three hundred years in the future from his day.
But since *1798 the book of Daniel has been unsealed*, knowledge of the prophecies has
increased, and many have proclaimed the solemn message of the judgment near. {GC88 356.2}

HOW DOES GOD TEACH US KNOWLEDGE AND DOCTRINE?

Isaiah 28:9-13.9Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine?
[them that are] weaned from the milk, [and] drawn from the breasts. 10 For precept [must be]
upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, [and] there a
little: 11For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. 12To whom he said,
This [is] the rest [wherewith] ye may cause the weary to rest; and this [is] the refreshing: yet
they would not hear.
WEANED FROM THE MILK, [AND] DRAWN FROM THE BREASTS

STAMMERING LIPS AND ANOTHER TONGUE

Isaiah 28:11. For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
Stammering lips=Uneducated=Common people. (Fishermen, farmers etc)
For the carrying on of His work, Christ did not choose the learning or eloquence of the Jewish
Sanhedrin or the power of Rome. Passing by the self-righteous Jewish teachers, the Master Worker
chose humble, unlearned men to proclaim the truths that were to move the world. These men He
purposed to train and educate as the leaders of His church. They in turn were to educate others and
send them out with the gospel message. That they might have success in their work they were to be
given the power of the Holy Spirit. Not by human might or human wisdom was the gospel to be
proclaimed, but by the power of God. {AA 17.1}
It was the cross, that instrument of shame and torture, which brought hope and salvation to the world.
The disciples were but humble men, without wealth, and with no weapon but the word of God;
yet in Christ's strength they went forth to tell the wonderful story of the manger and the cross, and to
triumph over all opposition. Without earthly honor or recognition, they were heroes of faith. From
their lips came words of divine eloquence that shook the world. {AA 77.1}
It was by cherishing a humble, teachable spirit that these men gained the experience that
enabled them to go out as workers into the harvest field. Their example presents to Christians a

lesson of great value. There are many who make but little progress in the divine life because they are
too self-sufficient to occupy the position of learners. They are content with a superficial knowledge
of God's word. They do not wish to change their faith or practice and hence make no effort to obtain
greater light. {AA 283.2}
WHICH KIND PEOPLE WILL GOD USES IN THESES LAST DAYS

As the time comes for it [the message of the third angel] to be given with greatest power, the Lord
will work through humble instruments, leading the minds of those who consecrate themselves to
His service. The laborers will be qualified rather by the unction of His Spirit than by the
training of literary institutions. Men of faith and prayer will be constrained to go forth with holy
zeal, declaring the words which God gives them. The sins of Babylon will be laid open. The fearful
results of enforcing the observances of the church by civil authority, the inroads of Spiritualism, the
stealthy but rapid progress of the papal power,--all will be unmasked. By these solemn warnings the
people will be stirred. Thousands upon thousands will listen who have never heard words like these.--

Unless those who can help in ________ are aroused to a sense of their duty, they will not recognize
the work of God when the loud cry of the third angel shall be heard. When light goes forth to
lighten the earth, instead of coming up to the help of the Lord, they will want to bind about His
work to meet their narrow ideas. Let me tell you that the Lord will work in this last work in a
manner very much out of the common order of things, and in a way that will be contrary to any
human planning… There will be those among us who will always want to control the work of God,
to dictate even what movements shall be made when the work goes forward under the direction of the
angel who joins the third angel in the message to be given to the world. God will use ways and means
by which it will be seen that He is taking the reins in His own hands. The workers will be surprised
by the simple means that He will use to bring about and perfect His work of righteousness . TM
300.

We should know for ourselves what constitutes Christianity, what is truth, what is the faith that we
have received, what are the Bible rules—the rules given us from the highest authority.” The 1888

the same plan that Father Miller adopted. In the little book entitled Views of the Prophecies and
Prophetic Chronology, Father Miller gives the following simple but intelligent and important rules
for Bible study and interpretation: Review and Herald, November 25, 1884.

Jeremiah 6:16. Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths,
where [is] the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said,
We will not walk [therein].
MILLERS RULES, THE OLD PATH OF SDA

RULE I- Every word must have its proper bearing on the subject presented in the Bible. PROOF:
Matthew 5:18.
RULE II- All Scripture is necessary and may be understood by a diligent application and study.
PROOF: 2 Timothy 3:15–17.
RULE III- Nothing revealed in the Scripture can or will be hid from those who ask in faith, not
wavering.
PROOF: Deuteronomy 29:29; Matthew 10:26, 27; 1 Corinthians 2:10; Philippians 3:15; Isaiah
14:11; Matthew 21:22; John 14:13–4; 15:7; James 1:5, 6; 1 John 5:13–15.
RULE IV- To understand doctrine, bring all the scriptures together on the subject you wish to know,
then let every word have its proper influence, and if you can form your theory without a
contradiction, you cannot be in an error.
PROOF: Isaiah 28:7–29; 35:8; Proverbs 19:27; Luke 24:27, 44, 45; Romans 16:26; James 5:19; 2
Peter 1:19, 29.
RULE V- Scripture must be—its own expositor, since it is a rule of itself. If I depend on a teacher to
expound it to me and he should, guess at its meaning, or desire to have it so on account of his
sectarian creed or to be thought wise, then his guessing, desire, creed or wisdom is my rule, not the
Bible.
PROOF: Psalm 19:7–11; 119:97–105; Matthew 23:8–10; 1 Corinthians 2:12–16;
Ezekiel 34:18, 19; Luke 11:52; Malachi 2:7, 8.
RULE VI- God has revealed things to come, by visions, in figures and parables, and in this way the
same things are often time revealed again and again, by different visions, or in different figures, and
parables. If you wish to understand them, you must combine them all in one.
PROOF: Psalm 89:19; Hosea 12:10; Habakkuk 2:2; Acts 2:17; 1 Corinthians 5:6; Hebrews 9:9, 24;
Psalm 78:2; Matthew 13:13, 34; Genesis 41:1–32; Daniel 2, 7, 8; Acts 10:9–16.
RULE VII- Visions are always mentioned as such.
PROOF: 2 Corinthians 12:1.
RULE VIII- Figures always have a figurative meaning, and are used much in prophecy, to represent
future things, times and events; such as mountains, meaning governments; beasts meaning kingdoms.
Waters, meaning people. Lamp, meaning Word of God. Day, meaning year.
PROOF: Daniel 2:35, 44; 7:8, 17; Revelation 17:1, 15; Psalm 119:105; Ezekiel 4:6.

RULE IX- Parables are used as companions to illustrate subjects, and must be explained in the same
way as figures by the subject and Bible. Mark 4:13. See also; the explanation of the ten virgins:
Miller’s Lectures, Number 16.
RULE X- Figures sometimes have two or more different significations, as day is used in a figurative
sense to represent three different periods of time.
PROOF: Ecclesiastes 7:14.
1. Indefinite.
2. Definite, a day for a year.
3. Day for a thousand years.
If you put on the right construction it will harmonize with the Bible and make good sense, otherwise
it will not.
PROOF: Ezekiel 4:6; 2 Peter 3:8.
RULE XI- How to know when a word is used figuratively. If it makes good sense as it stands, and
does no violence to the simple laws of nature, then it must be understood literally, if not, figuratively
PROOF: Revelation 12:1, 2; 17:3–7.
RULE XII- To learn the true meaning of figures, trace your figurative word through your Bible, and
where you find it explained, put it on your figure, and if it makes good sense you need look no
further, if not, look again.
RULE XIII- To know whether we have the true historical event for the fulfillment of a prophecy. If
you find every word of the prophecy (after the figures are understood) is literally fulfilled, then you
may know that your history is the true event.
But if one word lacks a fulfillment, then you must look for another event, or wait its future
development. For God takes care that history and prophecy doth agree, so that the true believing
children of God may never be ashamed.
PROOF: Psalm 22:5; Isaiah 14:17–19; 1 Peter 2:6; Revelation 17:17; Acts 3:18.
RULE XIV- The most important rule of all is, that you must have faith. It must be a faith that
requires a sacrifice, and, if tried, would give up the dearest object on earth, the world and all its
desires, character, living, occupation, friends, horns, comforts, and worldly honors. If any of these
should hinder our believing any part of God’s word, it would show our faith to be vain. Nor can we
ever believe so long as one of these motives lies lurking in our hearts. We must believe that God will
never forfeit his word. And we can have confidence that he that takes notice of the sparrow, and
numbers the hairs of our head, will guard the translation of his own word, and throw a barrier around
it, and prevent those who sincerely trust in God, and put implicit confidence in his word, from erring
far from the truth, though they may not understand Hebrew or Greek.
OTHER GUIDING PRINCIPLES/RULES

PRINCIPLE ONE: God’s dealing With Men Is Ever The Same.
Hebrew 13:8. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
Malachi 3:6. For I [am] the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
The work of God in the earth presents, from age to age, a striking similarity in every great
reformation or religious movement. The principles of God's dealing with men are ever the same.
The important movements of the present have their parallel in those of the past, and the experience of
the church in former ages has lessons of great value for our own time. {GC88 343.1}
PRINCIPLE TWO: History Repeats Itself
ECC 1:9. The thing that hath been, it [is that] which shall be; and that which is done [is] that which
shall be done: and [there is] no new [thing] under the sun.
Ecc 3:15. That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth
that which is past.
The Old and New Testaments are linked together by the golden clasp of God. We need to become
familiar with the Old-Testament Scriptures. The unchangeableness of God should be clearly seen; the
similarity of his dealings with his people of the past dispensation and of the present, should be
studied. Under the inspiration of the Spirit of God, Solomon wrote, "That which hath been is now:
and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past." In mercy God
repeats his past dealings. He has given us a record of his dealings in the past. This we need to
study carefully; for history is repeating itself. We are more accountable than were those whose
experience is recorded in the Old Testament; for their mistakes, and the results of those mistakes,
have been chronicled for our benefit. {RH, April 20, 1897 par. 14}
PRINCIPLE THREE: GOD DECLARES THE END OF SOMETHING FROM ITS
BEGINNING.
Isaiah 46:9. Remember the former things of old: for I [am] God, and [there is] none else; [I am]
God, and [there is] none like me, 10. Declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient
times [the things] that are not [yet] done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my
pleasure:
Isaiah 41:21.Produce your cause, saith the LORD; bring forth your strong [reasons], saith the King
of Jacob. 22 Let them bring [them] forth, and show us what shall happen: let them show the former
things, what they [be], that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare
us things for to come.
The great work of the gospel is not to close with less manifestation of the power of God than marked
its opening. The prophecies which were fulfilled in the outpouring of the former rain at the
opening of the gospel are again to be fulfilled in the latter rain at its close. Here are "the times of
refreshing" to which the apostle Peter looked forward when he said: "Repent ye therefore, and be
converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the
presence of the Lord; and He shall send Jesus." Acts 3:19,20. {Great Controversy, p. 611}

PRINCIPLE FOUR: ALL PROPHET SPOKE ABOUT THE END OF THE WORLD
1 Cor 10:11. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our
admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
1 Peter 1:12 Not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported
unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from
heaven; which things the angels desire to look into.’
All the prophets were speaking about the end of the world, and therefore all the prophets were
identifying the same prophetic history—the prophetic history of the end of the world. All the prophets
were therefore telling the identical story.
“Each of the ancient prophets spoke less for their own time than for ours, so that their
prophesying is in force for us. ‘Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they
are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.’ 1 Corinthians 10:11.
‘Not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by
them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which
things the angels desire to look into.’ 1 Peter 1:12. . . . Selected Messages, book 3, 338

Christ presented before them an outline of the prominent events to take place before the close of time.
His words were not then fully understood; but their meaning was to be unfolded as his people should
need the instruction therein given. The prophecy which he uttered was twofold in its meaning:
while foreshadowing the destruction of Jerusalem, it prefigured also the terrors of the last great
day. {GC88 25.4}
“The Bible has accumulated and bound up together its treasures for this last generation. All the great
events and solemn transactions of Old Testament history have been, and are, repeating
themselves in the church in these last days.” Selected Messages, book 3, 339.
“These men of the Old Testament spoke of things transpiring in their day, and Daniel, Isaiah, and
Ezekiel not only spoke of things that concerned them as present truth, but their sights reached down
to the future, and to what should occur in these last days.” Selected Messages, book 3, 419, 420.
PRINCIPLE FIVE: GOD USES NATURE TO TEACH US SPIRITUAL TRUTH
Romans 1:20. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being
understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are
without excuse:
The things of nature are the Lord's silent ministers, given to us to teach us spiritual truths. They speak
to us of the love of God and declare the wisdom of the great Master Artist. {AH 146.3}
The great Teacher brought His hearers in contact with nature, that they might listen to the voice
which speaks in all created things; and as their hearts became tender and their minds receptive, He
helped them to interpret the spiritual teaching of the scenes upon which their eyes rested. The

parables, by means of which He loved to teach lessons of truth, show how open His spirit was to the
influences of nature, and how He delighted to gather the spiritual teaching from the surroundings of
daily life. {CG 51.3}
PRINCIPLE SIX: FIRST THE NATURAL AND THEN THE SPIRITUAL
1 Corinthian 15:46. Howbeit that [was] not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and
afterward that which is spiritual.

PROPHECY CAN BE TRACED ON LINE

There are those now living who, in studying the prophecies of Daniel and John, received great light
from God as they passed over the ground where special prophecies were in process of fulfillment in
their order. They bore the message of time to the people. The truth shone out clearly as the sun at
noonday. *Historical events*, showing the *direct fulfillment of prophecy*, were set before the
people, and the *prophecy was seen to be a figurative delineation of events leading down to the
close of this earth’s history*. - 2SM 102.1

1. First draught of a thing; outline; representation of a form or figure by lines; sketch; design.
Prophecy is a representation of future events through Biblical symbols (figurative) which can be
traced on/upon lines (delineation) having a specific order and direction, i.e., they are leading to the
close of this earth’s history.
Prophecy has been fulfilling, line upon line. The more firmly we stand under the banner of the third
angel’s message, the more clearly shall we understand the prophecy of Daniel; for the Revelation is
the supplement of Daniel. The more fully we accept the light presented by the Holy Spirit through the
consecrated servants of God, the deeper and surer, even as the eternal throne, will appear the truths of

 WHAT IS THE REFRESHING?
At that time, while the work of salvation is closing, trouble will be coming on the earth, and the
nations will be angry, yet held in check so as not to prevent the work of the third angel. At that time
the "latter rain," or refreshing from the presence of the Lord, will come, to give power to the
loud voice of the third angel, and prepare the saints to stand in the period when the seven last
plagues shall be poured out. {EW 85.3}
I heard those clothed with the armor speak forth the truth with great power. It had effect.
Many had been bound; some wives by their husbands, and some children by their parents. The honest
who had been prevented from hearing the truth now eagerly laid hold upon it. All fear of their
relatives was gone, and the truth alone was exalted to them. They had been hungering and thirsting
for truth; it was dearer and more precious than life. I asked what had made this great change. An
angel answered, "It is the latter rain, the refreshing from the presence of the Lord, the loud cry
of the third angel." {CET 177.2}
The *latter rain is to fall upon the people of God*. A mighty angel is to come down from heaven,
and the *whole earth is to be lighted with His glory*. Are we ready to take part in the glorious
work of the third angel? Are our vessels ready to receive the heavenly dew? Have we defilement
and sin in the heart? If so, let us cleanse the soul temple, and prepare for the showers of the latter rain.
*The refreshing from the presence of the Lord* will never come to hearts filled with impurity.
May God help us to die to self, that Christ, the hope of glory, may be formed within! - YRP 296.3
There is to be in the [Seventh-day Adventist] churches a wonderful manifestation of the power of
God, but it will not move upon those who have not humbled themselves before the Lord, and opened
the door of the heart by confession and repentance. In the manifestation of that power which
lightens the earth with the glory of God, they will see only something which in their blindness they
think dangerous, something which will arouse their fears, and they will brace themselves to resist it…
Because the Lord does not work according to their ideas and expectations they will oppose the work.
"Why," they say, "should we not know the Spirit of God, when we have been in the work so many
years?“ … The third angel's message will not be comprehended, the light which will lighten the
earth with its glory will be called a false light, by those who refuse to walk in its advancing glory .

THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE THIRD ANGEL MESSAGE

“The book of Revelation must be opened to the people. Many have been taught that it is a sealed
book; but it is sealed to those only who reject light and truth. The truth that it contains must be
proclaimed, that people may have an opportunity to prepare for the events which are so soon to take
place. The third angel’s message must be presented as the only hope for salvation of a perishing
world. The perils of the last days are upon us, and in our work we are to warn people of the danger
that they are in. Let not the solemn scenes, that prophecy has revealed are soon to take place, be
left untouched. If our people were awake, if they realized the nearness of the events portrayed by
John, such a reformation would be made in our churches that many more would believe our
message. We are God’s messengers, and we have no time to lose, for He calls upon us to watch for
souls as they that must give an account. Advance new principles, and crowd in clear-cut truth. It
will be as a sword cutting both ways. But do not be too ready to take a controversial attitude. There
will be times when we must stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. Present the truth as it is in
Jesus. Let Daniel speak, let Revelation speak, and tell what is truth . But whatever phase of the
subject is presented, uplift Jesus as the center of all hope, “the root and the offspring of David, and
the bright and morning star.”” – {Pacific Union Recorder, January 14, 1904 Par. 5, 6}
To John were opened scenes of deep and thrilling interest in the experience of the church . He saw
the position, dangers, conflicts, and final deliverance of the people of God. He records the closing
messages which are to ripen the harvest of the earth , either as sheaves for the heavenly garner or
as fagots for the fires of destruction. Subjects of vast importance were revealed to him, especially for
the last church, that those who should turn from error to truth might be instructed concerning the
perils and conflicts before them. None need be in darkness in regard to what is coming upon the earth.

THIRD ANGEL'S MESSAGE TAKES UP THE FIRST AND SECOND’S MESSAGE
ANGELS
The theme of greatest importance is the third angel's message, embracing the messages of the
first and second angels. All should understand the truths contained in these messages and

demonstrate them in daily life, for this is essential to salvation. We shall have to study earnestly,
prayerfully, in order to understand these grand truths; and our power to learn and comprehend will be
taxed to the utmost. {Evangelism, p. 196}
The first and second messages were given in 1843 and 1844, and we are now under the
proclamation of the third; but all three of the messages are still to be proclaimed. It is just as
essential now as ever before that they shall be repeated to those who are seeking for the truth. By
pen and voice we are to sound the proclamation, showing their order, and the application of
the prophecies that bring us to the third angel's message. There cannot be a third without the first
and second. These messages we are to give to the world in publications, in discourses, showing in
the line of prophetic history the things that have been and the things that will be. {2SM 104.3}
“The truths that we received in 1841, ’42, ’43, and ’44 are now to be studied and proclaimed .
The messages of the first, second, and third angels will in the future be proclaimed with a loud voice.
They will be give with earnest determination and in the power of the Spirit.” Letter 75 - February

“All the messages given from 1840–1844 are to be made forcible now, for there are many people
who have lost their bearings. The messages are to go to all the churches. “Christ said, ‘Blessed are
your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear. For verily I say unto you, That many prophets
and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear
those things which ye hear, and have not heard them’ [Matthew 13:16, 17]. Blessed are the eyes
which saw the things that were seen in 1843 and 1844. “The message was given. And there should
be no delay in repeating the message, for the signs of the times are fulfilling; the closing work
must be done. A great work will be done in a short time. A message will soon be given by God’s

“My mind is clear, and I am able to do a great deal of writing. My mind is very much occupied just
now in the endeavor to present in the best way the facts in regard to our early experience in the
proclamation of the truth that we held. I do not wish to ignore or drop one link in the chain of
evidence that was formed as, after the passing of the time in 1844, little companies of seekers
after truth met together to study the Bible and to ask God for light and guidance . As we
searched the Scriptures with much prayer, many evidences were given us under the manifestation of
the Holy Spirit’s power. What deep importance was attached to every evidence that God gave us! The
truth, point by point, was fastened in our minds so firmly that we could not doubt. Men and women
came to the different places where meetings were appointed to be held, to see if they could not bring
in their false theories. But although they would advance erroneous and sometimes fanatical teachings,
we had the truth so firmly established in our minds that we had nothing to fear. And now, after half a
century of clear light from the Word as to what is truth, there are arising many false theories to
unsettle minds. But the evidence given in our early experience has the same force that it had then.
The truth is the same as it ever has been, and not a pin or a pillar can be moved from the
structure of truth. That which was sought for out of the Word in 1844, 1845, and 1846 remains

“The warning has come. Nothing is to be allowed to come in that will disturb the foundation of
the faith upon which we have been building ever since the message came in 1842, 1843, and
1844. I was in this message, and ever since I have been standing before the world, true to the light
that God has given me. We do not propose to take our feet off the platform on which they were
placed as, day by day, we sought the Lord with earnest prayer, seeking for light. Do you think that I
could give up the light that God has given me? It is to me as the Rock of Ages. It has been guiding

giving us a new message. We are to proclaim the message that in 1843 and 1844 brought us out

The burden of our work now is not to labor for those who, although they have had abundant light and
evidence, still continue on the unbelieving side. God bids us give our time and strength to the
work of preaching to the people the messages that stirred men and women in 1843 and 1844 .
We are now to labor unceasingly to get the truth before Jew and Gentile. Instead of going over and
over the same ground to establish the faith of those who should never have accepted a doubt
regarding the third angel's message, let our efforts be given to making known the truth to those who
have never heard it. God calls upon us to make known to all men the truths that have made us what

WHY SHOULD THESE FORMER MESSAGES BE GIVEN GAIN?

In every age there is a new development of truth, a message of God to the people of that
generation. The old truths are all essential; new truth is not independent of the old, but an
unfolding of it. It is only as the old truths are understood that we can comprehend the new.
When Christ desired to open to His disciples the truth of His resurrection, He began "at Moses and all
the prophets" and "expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself." Luke
24:27. But it is the light which shines in the fresh unfolding of truth that glorifies the old. He who
rejects or neglects the new does not really possess the old. For him it loses its vital power and
becomes but a lifeless form. COL 127.4
"Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and
walk therein." Let none seek to tear away the foundations of our faith,--the foundations that were laid at the
beginning of our work, by prayerful study of the Word and by revelation. Upon these foundations we have
been building for the last fifty years. Men may suppose that they have found a new way, and that they can lay a
stronger foundation than that which has been laid. But this is a great deception. Other foundation can no man
lay than that which has been laid. In the past many have undertaken the building of a new faith, the

establishment of new principles. But how long did their building stand?--It soon fell; for it was not founded
upon the Rock. Did not the first disciples have to meet the sayings of men? Did they not have to listen to false
theories, and then, having done all, to stand firm, saying, "Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid"?
So we are to hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end. Words of power have been
sent by God and by Christ to this people, bringing them out from the world, point by point, into
the clear light of present truth. With lips touched with holy fire, God's servants have proclaimed the

rejected the glorious truths which they once zealously advocated and had covered themselves
with mesmerism and all kinds of delusions. I saw that they were drunken with error and were
leading on their flock to death. Many of the opposers of God's truth devise mischief in their heads
upon their beds, and in the day they carry out their wicked devices to put down the truth and to get
something new to interest the people and divert their minds from the precious, all-important truth.

meeting, Brethren Charles Fitch and Apollos Hale, of Haverhill, presented the pictorial prophecies of
Daniel and John, which they had painted on cloth, with the prophetic numbers, showing their
fulfillment. Brother Fitch in explaining from his chart before the Conference, said, while examining
these prophecies, he had thought if he could get out something of the kind as here presented it would
simplify the subject and make it easier for him to present to an audience. Here was more light in our
pathway. These brethren had been doing what the Lord had shown Habakkuk in his vision 2,468
years before, saying, ‘Write the vision and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that

WERE THERE MISTAKES ON THE 1843 CHART?
“I saw that the old chart was directed by the Lord, and that not a peg of it should be altered without
inspiration. I saw that the figures on the chart were as God wanted them and that His hand was over
and hid a mistake in some of the figures so that none could see it until His hand was removed.”

I saw the people of God joyful in expectation, looking for their Lord. But God designed to prove
them. His hand covered a mistake in the reckoning of the prophetic periods. Those who were
looking for their Lord did not discover this mistake, and the most learned men who opposed the time
also failed to see it. God designed that His people should meet with a disappointment. The time
passed, and those who had looked with joyful expectation for their Saviour were sad and
disheartened, while those who had not loved the appearing of Jesus, but embraced the message
through fear, were pleased that He did not come at the time of expectation. Their profession had not
affected the heart and purified the life. The passing of the time was well calculated to reveal such
hearts. They were the first to turn and ridicule the sorrowful, disappointed ones who really loved the
appearing of their Saviour. I saw the wisdom of God in proving His people and giving them a
searching test to discover those who would shrink and turn back in the hour of trial. {EW 235.3}
WHAT WAS THE MISTAKE?
God intended to test His people. His hand covered a mistake in computing the prophetic periods.
The time expected passed and Christ did not appear. Those who had looked for their savior
experienced a bitter disappointment. Yet God was testing the hearts of those who claimed to be
waiting for His appearing. Many had acted from fear. These people declared that they had never
believed that Christ would come. They were among the first to ridicule the sorrow of the true
believers. But Jesus looked with love and sympathy on the faithful yet disappointed ones. If the veil
separating the visible from the invisible world could have been swept back, these loyal believer
would have seen angels drawing near to them and shielding them from Satan’s arrow. Lover under

Calculation of the time was so simple and plain that even children could understand it. From the date
of the decree of the king of Persia, found in Ezra 7, which was given in 457 before Christ, the 2300
years of Daniel 8:14 must terminate with 1843. Accordingly we looked to the end of this year for the

coming of the Lord. We were sadly disappointed when the year entirely passed away and the Saviour
had not come. {1T 52.2}
It was not at first perceived that if the decree did not go forth at the beginning of the year 457
B.C., the 2300 years would not be completed at the close of 1843. But it was ascertained that the
decree was given near the close of the year 457 B.C., and therefore the prophetic period must reach to
the fall of the year 1844. Therefore the vision of time did not tarry, though it had seemed to do so. We
learned to rest upon the language of the prophet. "For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at
the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not
tarry." {1T 52.3}
God tested and proved His people by the passing of the time in 1843. The mistake made in
reckoning the prophetic periods was not at once discovered even by learned men who opposed
the views of those who were looking for Christ's coming. Scholars declared that Mr. Miller was
right in his calculation of the time, though they disputed him in regard to the event that would crown
that period. But they, and the waiting people of God, were in a common error on the question of time.

WHAT DID GOD DO ABOUT THE “MISTAKE” AFTER HE HAD TESTED THEIR FAITH

“Those faithful, disappointed ones, who could not understand why their Lord did not come, were not
left in darkness. Again they were led to their Bibles to search the prophetic periods. The hand of the
Lord was removed from the figures, and the mistake was explained.” Spiritual Gifts vol.1 p.138

In the summer of 1844, Adventists discovered the mistake in their former reckoning of the
prophetic periods, and settled upon the correct position. The 2300 days of Daniel 8:14, which all
believed to extend to the second coming of Christ, had been thought to end in the spring of 1844; but
it was now seen that this period extended to the autumn of the same year, and the minds of Adventists
were fixed upon this point as the time for the Lord's appearing. Spirit of Prophecy vol.4 p.248.2
WHAT DID THE ADVENTISTS DISCOVER AFTER THEIR FIRST DISAPPOINTMENT
THAT HELPED TO EXPLAIN THE MISTAKE IN THEIR RECKONING?
“We date the "seven times" or 2520 years, from the captivity of Manasseh, which is, with great
unanimity, placed by chronologers B. C. 677. This date is the only one we have ever reckoned from,
for the commencement of this period; and subtracting B. C. 677 from 2520 years, there remained but
A. D. 1843. We, however, did not observe, that as it would require 677 full years B. C. and 1843 full
years A. D. to complete 2520 years, that it would also oblige us to extend this period as far into A.
D. 1844, as it might have commenced after the beginning of B. C. 677. The same was also true of
the other periods…the 2300 days, commencing with the 70 weeks B. C. 457, would respectively
require 1843 full years after Christ added to as many full years before Christ, as the years in which
we have always respectively commenced each period, to complete the number of years in each; and
as subtracting from each period the date B. C. of its commencement, there would remain A. D. 1843,
no reference whatever was made to the fraction of the year, which, in each case, had transpired from
its commencement, and which would require that each period should extend as much beyond the

expiration of A. D. 1843, as they respectively began after the commencement of the year B. C. from

GREAT DISSAPOINTMENT WAS NOT CUASED BY A MISTAKE IN THE PROPHETIC

“Jesus did not come to earth as the waiting, joyful company expected, to cleanse the Sanctuary, by
purifying the earth by fire. I saw that they were correct in their reckoning of the prophetic
periods. Prophetic time closed in 1844. Their mistake consisted in not understanding what the
Sanctuary was, and the nature of its cleansing. Jesus did enter the Most Holy place to cleanse the
Sanctuary at the ending of the days. I looked again at the waiting, disappointed company. They
looked sad. They carefully examined the evidences of their faith and followed down through the
reckoning of the prophetic periods, and could discover no mistake. Time was fulfilled, but where
was their Saviour? They had lost him.” Spiritual Gifts vol.1 p.148.
“The mistake had not been in the reckoning of the prophetic periods, but in the event to take place

feet and praised God with a loud voice; it was something as it was when the foundation of the
house of God was laid. The voice of weeping could not be told from the voice of shouting. It was a
triumphant time; all were strengthened and refreshed. I never witnessed such a powerful time before.
Our next Conference was in Fairhaven. Brother Bates and wife were present. It was quite a good
meeting. On our return to Brother Nichols’, the Lord gave me a vision and shewed me that the
truth must be made plain upon tables and it would cause many to decide for the truth by the
three angels’ messages with the two former being made plain upon tables.” Letter 28 -

“The chart is being executed in Boston. God is in it. Bro. Nichols has the charge of it.” 15MR 213
“I saw that God was in the publishment of the chart by Brother Nichols. I saw that there was a
prophecy of this chart in the Bible, and if this chart is designed for God’s people, if it [is] sufficient
for one it is for another, and if one needed a new chart painted on a larger scale, all needed it just as

“I saw that the charts ordered by God struck the mind favorably, even without an explanation.
There is something light, lovely, and heavenly in the representation of the angels on the charts. The
mind is almost imperceptibly led to God and heaven.”

MILLER’S JEWELS AND THE CASKET

There are glorious truths to come before the people of God. Privileges and duties which they do
not even suspect to be in the Bible will be laid open before the followers of Christ. As they follow
on in the path of humble obedience, doing God's will, they will know more and more of the oracles of
God, and be established in right doctrines. The baptism of the Holy Spirit will dispel human
imaginings, will break down self-erected barriers, and will cause to cease the feeling that "I am holier

than thou." There will be an humble spirit with all, more faith and love; self will not be exalted.
"Look and live." Christ's spirit, Christ's example will be exemplified in His people. We shall follow
more closely the ways and works of Jesus. The pulpit, the press, and the church will be more humble,
more forbearing, more patient and kind, and the love of Jesus will pervade our hearts. It is impossible
for me to picture before you the result of this influence. {1888 333.1}
“The dust and rubbish of error have buried the precious jewels of truth, but the Lord’s workers
can uncover these treasures, so that thousands will look upon them with delight and awe. Angels of
God will be beside the humble worker, giving grace and divine enlightenment, and thousands will be
led to pray with David, ‘Open thou mine eyes that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.’
Truths that have been for ages unseen and unheeded, will blaze forth from the illuminated pages of
God’s holy word. The churches generally that have heard, refused, and trampled upon the truth, will
do more wickedly; but ‘the wise,’ those who are honest, will understand. The book is open, and the
words of God reach the hearts of those who desire to know his will. At the loud cry of the angel
from heaven who joins the third angel, thousands will awake from the stupor that has held the world
for ages, and will see the beauty and value of the truth.” Review and Herald, December 15, 1885.
“In the time of the Saviour, the Jews had so covered over the precious jewels of truth with
the rubbish of tradition and fable, that it was impossible to distinguish the true from the false. The
Saviour came to clear away the rubbish of superstition and long-cherished errors, and to set the
jewels of God’s word in the frame-work of truth. What would the Saviour do if he should come to
us now as he did to the Jews? He would have to do a similar work in clearing away the rubbish of
tradition and ceremony. The Jews were greatly disturbed when he did this work. They had lost sight
of the original truth of God, but Christ brought it again to view. It is our work to free the precious
truths of God from superstition and error.” Review and Herald, June 4, 1889.
“The Scriptures are given for our benefit that we may have instruction in righteousness. Precious rays
of light have been obscured by the clouds of error, but Christ is ready to sweep away the mists of
error and superstition, and to reveal to us the brightness of the Father’s glory, so that we shall say
as did the disciples, ‘Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way?’”

“Mighty truths have been buried beneath the sophistry of error, but they will be found by the diligent
searcher. As he finds and opens the treasure house of the precious jewels of truth, it is no robbery;
for all who appreciate these jewels may possess them, and then they too have a treasure house to open
to others. He who imparts does not deprive himself of the treasure; for as he examines it that he may

“To hold yourselves aloof from an investigation of truth is not the way to carry out the Saviour’s
injunction to ‘search the Scriptures.’ Is it digging for hidden treasures to call the results of some
one’s labor a mass of rubbish, and make no critical examination to see whether or not there are
precious jewels of truth in the collection of thought which you condemn? Will those who have
almost everything to learn keep themselves away from every meeting where there is an opportunity to
investigate the messages that come to the people, simply because they imagine the views held by the
teachers of the truth may be out of harmony with what they have conceived as truth? Thus it was

that the Jews did in the days of Christ, and we are warned not to do as they did, and be led to
choose darkness rather than light, because there was in them an evil heart of unbelief in departing
from the living God. No one of those who imagine that they know it all is too old or too intelligent to

WILLIAM MILLER AND HIS DREAM OF THE CASKET
WHO WAS WILLIAM MILLER?
As John the Baptist heralded the first advent of Jesus and prepared the way for His coming, so
William Miller and those who joined with him proclaimed the second advent of the Son of God.
{EW 229.2}
Preachers and people have looked upon the book of Revelation as mysterious as and of less
importance than other portions of the Sacred Scriptures. But I saw that this book is indeed a
revelation given for the especial benefit of those who should live in the last days, to guide them in
ascertaining their true position and their duty. God directed the mind of William Miller to the
prophecies and gave him great light upon the book of Revelation. {EW 231.1}
God sent His angel to move upon the heart of a farmer who had not believed the Bible, to lead
him to search the prophecies. Angels of God repeatedly visited that chosen one, to guide his mind
and open to his understanding prophecies which had ever been dark to God's people. The
commencement of the chain of truth was given to him, and he was led on to search for link after
link, until he looked with wonder and admiration upon the Word of God. He saw there a
perfect chain of truth. That Word which he had regarded as uninspired now opened before his
vision in its beauty and glory. He saw that one portion of Scripture explains another, and when one
passage was closed to his understanding, he found in another part of the Word that which explained
it. He regarded the sacred Word of God with joy and with the deepest respect and awe. {EW 229.1}
MILLER’S DREAM IA ALL ABOUT A CASKET. WHAT IS CASKET?
*The Bible is a field where are concealed heavenly treasures and they will remain hidden until*,
by diligent mining, they are discovered and brought to light. *The Bible is a casket containing
jewels of inestimable value, which should be so presented as to be seen in their intrinsic luster*.
But the beauty and excellence of these diamonds of truth are not discerned by the natural eye. The
lovely things of the material world are not seen until the sun, dispelling the darkness, floods them
with its light. And so with the treasures of God's word; they are not appreciated until they are
revealed by the Sun of Righteousness. {CT 421.2}
MILLER’S CASKET HAD A KEY, WHAT IS THIS KEY?
“Connected with the Word of God there is a *key that unlocks the precious casket*, to our
satisfaction and delight.” Manuscript Releases, volume 17, 261.
Thoughtful investigation and earnest, taxing study are required in order for this word to be
understood. There are truths in the word which, like veins of precious ore, are hidden beneath the
surface. The hidden treasure is discovered as it is searched for, as a miner searches for gold and
silver. The evidence of the truth of God's word is in the word itself. *Scripture is the key that

unlocks scripture*. The deep meaning of the truths of God's word is unfolded to our minds by His
Spirit. {8T 157.1}
THE CASKET HAD JEWELS, WHAT ARE THESE JEWEL?
"The 'jewels, diamonds, precious stones,' etc., were the doctrines of the Bible, which, each
sparkling and bright like precious gems, glittered in the casket as they were unfolded to view .

JAMES WHITE’S UNDERSTANDING OF THE CASKET, KEY & RUBBISH

“The ‘casket’ represents the great truths of the Bible, relative to the second advent of our Lord Jesus
Christ which were given Brother Miller to publish to the world.
“The ‘key attached’ was his manner of interpreting the prophetic Word—Comparing scripture with
scripture—the Bible its own interpreter. With this key Brother Miller opened the ‘casket,’ or the great
truth of the advent to the world. . .
“The ‘dirt and shavings, sand and all manner of rubbish,’ represent the various and numerous errors
that have been brought in among Second Advent believers, since the autumn of 1844.” James White,
The Present Truth, May, 1850.
MILLER’S SECOND DREAM
I dreamed that God, by an unseen hand, sent me a curiously wrought [shaped] casket about ten
inches long by six square, made of ebony and pearls curiously inlaid. To the casket there was a key
attached. I immediately took the key and opened the casket, when, to my wonder and surprise, I
found it filled with all sorts and sizes of jewels, diamonds, precious stones, and gold and silver coin
of every dimension and value, beautifully arranged in their several places in the casket; and thus
arranged they reflected a light and glory equaled only to the sun. {EW 81.2}
I thought it was not my duty to enjoy this wonderful sight alone, although my heart was overjoyed at
the brilliancy, beauty, and value of its contents. I therefore placed it on a center table in my room and
gave out word that all who had a desire might come and see the most glorious and brilliant sight ever
seen by man in this life. {EW 81.3}
The people began to come in, at first few in number, but increasing to a crowd. When they first
looked into the casket, they would wonder and shout for joy. But when the spectators increased,
everyone would begin to trouble the jewels, taking them out of the casket and scattering them on the
table. {EW 82.1}
I began to think that the owner would require the casket and the jewels again at my hand; and if I
suffered them to be scattered, I could never place them in their places in the casket again as before;
and felt I should never be able to meet the accountability, for it would be immense. I then began to
plead with the people not to handle them, nor to take them out of the casket; but the more I pleaded,
the more they scattered; and now they seemed to scatter them all over the room, on the floor and on
every piece of furniture in the room. {EW 82.2}
I then saw that among the genuine jewels and coin they had scattered an innumerable quantity of
spurious jewels and counterfeit coin. I was highly incensed at their base conduct and ingratitude, and

reproved and reproached them for it; but the more I reproved, the more they scattered the spurious
jewels and false coin among the genuine. {EW 82.3}
I then became vexed in my physical soul and began to use physical force to push them out of the
room; but while I was pushing out one, three more would enter and bring in dirt and shavings and
sand and all manner of rubbish, until they covered every one of the true jewels, diamonds, and coins,
which were all excluded from sight. They also tore in pieces my casket and scattered it among the
rubbish. I thought no man regarded my sorrow or my anger. I became wholly discouraged and
disheartened, and sat down and wept. {EW 82.4}
While I was thus weeping and mourning for my great loss and accountability, I remembered God,
and earnestly prayed that He would send me help. {EW 83.1}
Immediately the door opened, and a man entered the room, when the people all left it; and he,
having a dirt brush in his hand, opened the windows, and began to brush the dirt and rubbish
from the room. {EW 83.2}
I cried to him to forbear, for there were some precious jewels scattered among the rubbish. {EW
83.3}
He told me to "fear not," for he would "take care of them". {EW 83.4}
Then, while he brushed the dirt and rubbish, false jewels and counterfeit coin, all rose and went out of
the window like a cloud, and the wind carried them away. In the bustle I closed my eyes for a
moment; when I opened them, the rubbish was all gone. The precious jewels, the diamonds, the gold
and silver coins, lay scattered in profusion all over the room. {EW 83.5}
He then placed on the table a casket, much larger and more beautiful than the former, and gathered
up the jewels, the diamonds, the coins, by the handful, and cast them into the casket, till not one was
left, although some of the diamonds were not bigger than the point of a pin. {EW 83.6}
He then called upon me to "come and see." {EW 83.7}
I looked into the casket, but my eyes were dazzled with the sight. They shone with ten times their
former glory. I thought they had been scoured in the sand by the feet of those wicked persons who
had scattered and trod them in the dust. They were arranged in beautiful order in the casket, every one
in its place, without any visible pains of the man who cast them in. I shouted with very joy, and that
shout awoke me. {EW 83.8}
“The enemy of souls has sought to bring in the supposition that a great reformation was to take place
among Seventh-day Adventists, and that this reformation would consist in giving up the doctrines
which stand as the pillars of our faith, and engaging in a process of reorganization. Were this
reformation to take place, what would result? The principles of truth that God in His wisdom has
given to the remnant church, would be discarded. Our religion would be changed. The
fundamental principles that have sustained the work for the last fifty years would be accounted
as error. A new organization would be established. Books of a new order would be written. A system
of intellectual philosophy would be introduced. The founders of this system would go into the cities,
and do a wonderful work. The Sabbath of course, would be lightly regarded, as also the God who
created it. Nothing would be allowed to stand in the way of the new movement. The leaders would

teach that virtue is better than vice, but God being removed, they would place their dependence on
human power, which, without God, is worthless. Their foundation would be built on the sand, and
storm and tempest would sweep away the structure.
“Who has authority to begin such a movement? We have our Bibles. We have our experience,
attested to by the miraculous working of the Holy Spirit. We have a truth that admits of no
compromise. Shall we not repudiate everything that is not in harmony with this truth?” Selected
Messages, book 2, 204–205.
There is to be no change in the features of our work. It is to stand as clear and distinct as prophecy
has made it. We are to enter into no confederacy with the world, supposing that by so doing we could
accomplish more. If any stand in the way, to hinder the advancement of the work in the lines that God
has appointed, they will displease God. No line of our faith that has made us what we are is to be
weakened. We have the old landmarks of truth, experience, and duty; we are to stand firmly in
defense of our principles, in full view of the world. {CTr 350.5}

WHEN WILLTHESE MESSGES BE REPEATED

Many who heard the first and second angels' messages thought they would live to see Christ coming
in the clouds of heaven. Had all who claimed to believe the truth acted their part as wise virgins, the
message would ere this have been proclaimed to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. But five
were wise and five were foolish. The truth should have been proclaimed by the ten virgins, but only
five had made the provision essential to join that company who walked in the light that had come to
them. The third angel's message was needed. This proclamation was to be made. Many who went
forth to meet the Bridegroom under the messages of the first and second angels, refused the
third angel's message, the last testing message to be given to the world. {16MR 269.3}
A similar work will be accomplished when that other angel, represented in Revelation 18,
gives his message. The first, second, and third angels' messages will need to be repeated. The
call will be given to the church, "Come out of her, My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins."
"Babylon, the great, is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every
foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the
wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the
merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. . . . Come out of her,
My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues: for her sins
have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities" [Revelation 18:2-5]. {16MR
270.1}
God has given the messages of Revelation 14 their place in the line of prophecy, and their work
is not to cease till the close of this earth’s history. The first and second angel’s messages are still
truth for this time, and are to run parallel with this which follows. The third angel proclaims his
warning with a loud voice. “After these things,” said John, “I saw another angel come down from
heaven, having great power, and the earth was lightened with his glory.” In this illumination, the
light of all the three messages is combined.” – {Ellen. G. White 1888 Materials, pg.804.3}

who lightens the earth with his glory. These messages all blend in one, to come before the people

THE ANGEL WHO LIGHTENS THE EARTH WITH HIS GLORY Rev 18:1-3

WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN THIS ANGEL COMES DOWN?

*“The angel who unites in the proclamation of the third angel’s message is to lighten the whole
earth with his glory*. A work of world-wide extent and unwonted power is here foretold. The
advent movement of 1840-44 was a glorious manifestation of the power of God; the first angel’s
message was carried to every missionary station in the world, and in some countries there was the
greatest religious interest which has been witnessed in any land since the Reformation of the sixteenth
century; *but these are to be exceeded by the mighty movement under the last warning of the
third angel*. The work will be *similar to that of the Day of Pentecost*. As the “former rain” was
given, in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at the opening of the gospel, to cause the unspringing of
the precious seed, so the “latter rain” will be given at its close for the ripening of the harvest. {Great
Controversy, pg.611.3}
"I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with
his glory." Then, as at the Pentecostal season, the people will hear the truth spoken to them,
every man in his own tongue. God can breathe new life into every soul that sincerely desires to
serve him, and can touch the lips with a live coal from off the altar, and cause them to become
eloquent with his praise. Thousands of voices will be imbued with the power to speak forth the
wonderful truths of God's word. The stammering tongue will be unloosed, and the timid will
be made strong to bear courageous testimony to the truth. May the Lord help his people to
cleanse the soul temple from every defilement, and to maintain such a close connection with him
that they may be partakers of the latter rain when it shall be poured out. {RH, July 20, 1886 par. 10}.
THIS MIGHTY ANGEL COMES WITH THE LATTER RAIN
The *latter rain is to fall upon the people of God*. A mighty angel is to come down from
heaven, and the *whole earth is to be lighted with His glory*. Are we ready to take part in the
glorious work of the third angel? Are our vessels ready to receive the heavenly dew? Have we
defilement and sin in the heart? If so, let us cleanse the soul temple, and prepare for the showers of
the latter rain. *The refreshing from the presence of the Lord* will never come to hearts filled with
impurity. May God help us to die to self, that Christ, the hope of glory, may be formed within! - YRP

THE COMING DOWN OF THE ANGEL OF REV 18 AND THE FALL OF THE TWIN TOWERS 11-
SEPTEMBER-2001 (9/11 EVENT)

Now comes the word that I have declared that *New York is to be swept away by a tidal wave*.
This I have never said. I have said, as I looked at the *great buildings going up there, story after
story*: ‘What terrible scenes will take place when the Lord shall arise to shake terribly the earth!
*Then the words of Revelation 18:1-3 will be fulfilled*.’ The whole of the eighteenth chapter of
Revelation is a *warning of what is coming on the earth*. But I have no light in particular in regard to
what is coming on New York, only I know that *one day the great buildings there will be thrown
down by the turning and overturning of God’s power*. From the light given me, I know that
destruction is in the world. One word from the Lord, one touch of His mighty power, and these
massive structures will fall. Scenes will take place the fearfulness of which we cannot imagine.” - LS

On one occasion, when in New York City, I was in the night season called upon to behold
buildings rising story after story toward heaven. These buildings were warranted to be fireproof,
and they were erected to glorify their owners and builders. Higher and still higher these buildings
rose, and in them the most costly material was used. Those to whom these buildings belonged
were not asking themselves: "How can we best glorify God?" The Lord was not in their thoughts.

I thought: "Oh, that those who are thus investing their means could see their course as God sees it!
They are piling up magnificent buildings, but how foolish in the sight of the Ruler of the universe is
their planning and devising. They are not studying with all the powers of heart and mind how they
may glorify God. They have lost sight of this, the first duty of man." {9T 12.2}
As these lofty buildings went up, the owners rejoiced with ambitious pride that they had money to
use in gratifying self and provoking the envy of their neighbors. Much of the money that they thus
invested had been obtained through exaction, through grinding down the poor. They forgot that in
heaven an account of every business transaction is kept; every unjust deal, every fraudulent act, is
there recorded. The time is coming when in their fraud and insolence men will reach a point that the
Lord will not permit them to pass, and they will learn that there is a limit to the forbearance of
Jehovah. {9T 12.3}
The scene that next passed before me was an alarm of fire. Men looked at the lofty and
supposedly fire-proof buildings and said: "They are perfectly safe." But these buildings were
consumed as if made of pitch. The fire engines could do nothing to stay the destruction. The firemen
were unable to operate the engines. 9T 12…

THE PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS AND THE THIRD ANGEL’S MESSAGE.

Matthew 25:1-12.1Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their
lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.2And five of them were wise, and five [were]
foolish. 3They that [were] foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: 4But the wise took oil
in their vessels with their lamps. 5While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept .

And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.

Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps . 8And the foolish said unto the wise, Give
us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. 9But the wise answered, saying, [Not so]; lest there be not
enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. 10And while they
went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and
the door was shut.11Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. 12But he
answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.
EXPLINATION OF THE PARABLE
As Christ sat looking upon the party that waited for the bridegroom, He told His disciples the story of
the ten virgins, by their experience illustrating the experience of the church that shall live just
before His second coming. {COL 406.2}

 The two classes of watchers represent the two classes who profess to be waiting for their Lord.
They are called virgins because they profess a pure faith. By the lamps is represented the word of
God. The psalmist says, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto may path." Psalm
119:105. The oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit…… {COL 406.3}
In the parable, all the ten virgins went out to meet the bridegroom. All had lamps and vessels for
oil. For a time there was seen no difference between them. So with the church that lives just before
Christ's second coming. All have a knowledge of the Scriptures. All have heard the message of
Christ's near approach, and confidently expect His appearing. But as in the parable, so it is now. A
time of waiting intervenes, faith is tried; and when the cry is heard, "Behold, the Bridegroom cometh;
go ye out to meet Him," many are unready. They have no oil in their vessels with their lamps. They
are destitute of the Holy Spirit. {COL 408.2}
Without the Spirit of God a knowledge of His word is of no avail. The theory of truth,
unaccompanied by the Holy Spirit, cannot quicken the soul or sanctify the heart. One may be familiar
with the commands and promises of the Bible; but unless the Spirit of God sets the truth home, the
character will not be transformed. Without the enlightenment of the Spirit, men will not be able to
distinguish truth from error, and they will fall under the masterful temptations of Satan. {COL
408.3}
The class represented by the foolish virgins are not hypocrites. They have a regard for the truth, they
have advocated the truth, they are attracted to those who believe the truth; but they have not
yielded themselves to the Holy Spirit's working. They have not fallen upon the Rock, Christ Jesus,
and permitted their old nature to be broken up. This class are represented also by the stony-ground
hearers. They receive the word with readiness, but they fail of assimilating its principles. Its influence
is not abiding. The Spirit works upon man's heart, according to his desire and consent implanting in
him a new nature; but the class represented by the foolish virgins have been content with a superficial
work. They do not know God. They have not studied His character; they have not held communion
with Him; therefore they do not know how to trust, how to look and live. Their service to God
degenerates into a form. "They come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as My
people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them; for with their mouth they show much
love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness." Ezekiel 33:31. The apostle Paul points out that
this will be the special characteristic of those who live just before Christ's second coming. He says,
"In the last days perilous times shall come: for men shall be lovers of their own selves; . . . lovers of
pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof." 2
Timothy 3:1-5. {COL 411.1}
This is the class that in time of peril are found crying, Peace and safety. They lull their hearts into
security, and dream not of danger. When startled from their lethargy, they discern their destitution,
and entreat others to supply their lack; but in spiritual things no man can make up another's
deficiency. The grace of God has been freely offered to every soul. The message of the gospel has
been heralded, "Let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life
freely." Revelation 22:17. But character is not transferable. No man can believe for another. No man
can receive the Spirit for another. No man can impart to another the character which is the fruit of the
Spirit's working. "Though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it [the land], as I live, saith the Lord God,

they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their
righteousness." Ezekiel 14:20. {COL 411.2}
It is in a crisis that character is revealed. When the earnest voice proclaimed at midnight, "Behold,
the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him," and the sleeping virgins were roused from their
slumbers, it was seen who had made preparation for the event. Both parties were taken unawares; but
one was prepared for the emergency, and the other was found without preparation. So now, a sudden
and unlooked-for calamity, something that brings the soul face to face with death, will show whether
there is any real faith in the promises of God. It will show whether the soul is sustained by grace. The
great final test comes at the close of human probation, when it will be too late for the soul's need to be
supplied. {COL 412.1}
The ten virgins are watching in the evening of this earth's history. All claim to be Christians. All
have a call, a name, a lamp, and all profess to be doing God's service. All apparently wait for Christ's
appearing. But five are unready. Five will be found surprised, dismayed, outside the banquet hall.
{COL 412.2}
At the final day, many will claim admission to Christ's kingdom, saying, "We have eaten and
drunk in Thy presence, and Thou hast taught in our streets." "Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in
Thy name? and in Thy name have cast out devils? and in Thy name done many wonderful works?"
But the answer is, "I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from Me." Luke 13:26; Matthew
7:22; Luke 13:27. In this life they have not entered into fellowship with Christ; therefore they know
not the language of heaven, they are strangers to its joy. "What man knoweth the things of a man,
save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of
God." 1 Corinthians 2:11. {COL 412.3}
In the parable the wise virgins had oil in their vessels with their lamps. Their light burned with
undimmed flame through the night of watching. It helped to swell the illumination for the
bridegroom's honor. Shining out in the darkness, it helped to illuminate the way to the home of the
bridegroom, to the marriage feast. {COL 414.1}
So the followers of Christ are to shed light into the darkness of the world. Through the Holy Spirit,
God's word is a light as it becomes a transforming power in the life of the receiver . By implanting in
their hearts the principles of His word, the Holy Spirit develops in men the attributes of God. The
light of His glory--His character--is to shine forth in His followers. Thus they are to glorify God, to
lighten the path to the Bridegroom's home, to the city of God, to the marriage supper of the Lamb.

It is the darkness of misapprehension of God that is enshrouding the world. Men are losing their
knowledge of His character. It has been misunderstood and misinterpreted. At this time a message
from God is to be proclaimed, a message illuminating in its influence and saving in its power. His
character is to be made known. Into the darkness of the world is to be shed the light of His glory, the
light of His goodness, mercy, and truth. {COL 415.3}
This is the work outlined by the prophet Isaiah in the words, "O Jerusalem, that bringest good
tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold

your God! Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and His arm shall rule for Him; behold,
His reward is with Him, and His work before Him." Isaiah 40:9,10. {COL 415.4}
Those who wait for the Bridegroom's coming are to say to the people, "Behold your God." The
last rays of merciful light, the last message of mercy to be given to the world, is a revelation of His
character of love. The children of God are to manifest His glory. In their own life and character
they are to reveal what the grace of God has done for them. {COL 415.5}
The light of the Sun of Righteousness is to shine forth in good works--in words of truth and
deeds of holiness. {COL 416.1}
THE PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS AND THE MILLERITE HISTORY
1. THE GOING FORTH OF THE VIRGINS
The coming of Christ, as announced by the first angel's message, was understood to be
represented by the coming of the bridegroom. *The widespread reformation under the
proclamation of His soon coming, answered to the going forth of the virgins*. In this parable, as
in that of Matthew 24, two classes are represented. All had taken their lamps, the Bible, and by its
light had gone forth to meet the Bridegroom. But while "they that were foolish took their lamps, and
took no oil with them," "the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps." The latter class had
received the grace of God, the regenerating, enlightening power of the Holy Spirit, which renders His
word a lamp to the feet and a light to the path. In the fear of God they had studied the Scriptures to
learn the truth, and had earnestly sought for purity of heart and life. These… {GC88, 393.3}

2. THE TARRYING OF THE BRIDEGROOM

“Those, whose hearts burned with a longing, intense desire to see Jesus, *were forbidden by their
professed brethren to speak of his coming*. Angels viewed the whole scene, and sympathized
with the remnant, who loved the appearing of Jesus. Another mighty angel was commissioned to
descend to earth. Jesus placed in his hand a writing, and as he came to earth, *he cried, Babylon
is fallen! is fallen!* Then I saw *the disappointed ones* again look cheerful, and raise their
eyes to heaven, looking with faith and hope for their Lord’s appearing. But many seemed to
remain in a stupid state, as if asleep; yet I could see the trace of deep sorrow upon their
countenances. *The disappointed ones saw from the Bible that they were in the tarrying
time*, and that they must patiently wait the fulfillment of the vision. *The same evidence which
led them to look for their Lord in 1843, led them to expect him in 1844*. I saw that the *majority
did not possess that energy which marked their faith in 1843*.Their disappointment had
dampened their faith. But as the disappointed ones united in the cry of the second angel, the
heavenly host looked with the deepest interest, and marked the effect of the message. They saw
those who bore the name of Christians turn with derision and scorn upon those who had been
disappointed. As the words fell from the mocker’s lips, You have not gone up yet! an angel wrote
them. Said the angel, They mock God.” – {Spiritual Gifts, vol. 1, pg.153.1}
3. THE MIDNIGHT

"While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made,
Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed
their lamps." Matthew 25:5-7. In the summer of 1844, midway between the time when it had been
first thought that the 2300 days would end, and the autumn of the same year, to which it was
afterward found that they extended, the message was proclaimed in the very words of Scripture:
"Behold, the Bridegroom cometh!" {GC 398.3}
4. MIDNIGHT CRY
As the churches refused to receive the first angel's message, they rejected the light from heaven and
fell from the favor of God. They trusted to their own strength, and by opposing the first message
placed themselves where they could not see the light of the second angel's message. But the beloved
of God, who were oppressed, accepted the message, "Babylon is fallen," and left the churches.
{EW 237.2}
Near the close of the second angel's message, I saw a great light from heaven shining upon the
people of God. The rays of this light seemed bright as the sun. And I heard the voices of angels
crying, "Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet Him!" {EW 238.1}

THE MIDNIGHT CRY EMPOWERED THE SECOND ANGEL’S MESSAGE

This was the midnight cry, which was to give power to the second angel's message. Angels
were sent from heaven to arouse the discouraged saints and prepare them for the great work before
them. The most talented men were not the first to receive this message. Angels were sent to the
humble, devoted ones, and constrained them to raise the cry, "Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye
out to meet Him!" Those entrusted with the cry made haste, and in the power of the Holy Spirit
sounded the message, and aroused their discouraged brethren. This work did not stand in the wisdom
and learning of men, but in the power of God, and His saints who heard the cry could not resist it.
The most spiritual received this message first, and those who had formerly led in the work were the
last to receive and help swell the cry, "Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet Him!"
{EW 238.2}
At the call, “The Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him,” the waiting ones “arose and
trimmed their lamps;” they studied the Word of God with an intensity of interest before unknown.
Angels were sent from Heaven to arouse those who had become discouraged, and prepare them to
receive the message. The work did not stand in the wisdom and learning of men, but in the power of
God. It was not the most talented, but the most humble and devoted, who were the first to hear and
obey the call. Farmers left their crops standing in the fields, mechanics laid down their tools, and with
tears and rejoicing went out to give the warning. Those who had formerly led in the cause were
among the last to join in this movement. The churches in general closed their doors against this
message, and a large company of those who received it withdrew from their connection. In the

providence of God, this proclamation united with the second angel's message, and gave power
to that work. {GC88 401.2}
The message, “Behold, the Bridegroom cometh!” was not so much a matter of argument,
though the Scripture proof was clear and conclusive. There went with it an impelling power that
moved the soul. There was no doubt, no questioning. Upon the occasion of Christ's triumphal entry
into Jerusalem, the people who were assembled from all parts of the land to keep the feast, flocked to
the Mount of Olives, and as they joined the throng that were escorting Jesus, they caught the
inspiration of the hour and helped to swell the shout, “Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the
Lord!” [Matthew 21:9.] In like manner did unbelievers who flocked to the Adventist meetings—
some from curiosity, some merely to ridicule—feel the convincing power attending the message,
“Behold, the Bridegroom cometh!” {GC88 402.1}
5. THE SHUT DOOR
“There was a shut door in Noah’s day. There was at that time a withdrawal of the Spirit of God
from the sinful race that perished in the waters of the Flood. God Himself gave the shut door
message to Noah: “My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his
days shall be an hundred and twenty years” (Genesis 6:3). There was a shut door in the days of
Abraham. Mercy ceased to plead with the inhabitants of Sodom, and all but Lot, with his wife
and two daughters were consumed by the fire sent down from heaven. There was a shut door in
Christ’s day. The Son of God declared to the unbelieving Jews of that generation, “Your house is
left unto you desolate” (Matthew 23:38). Looking down the stream of time to the last days, the
same infinite power proclaimed through John: “These things saith he that is holy, he that is true,
he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man
openeth” (Revelation 3:7).* I was shown in vision, and I still believe, that there was a shut
door in 1844*. All who saw the light of the *first and second angels’ messages and rejected
that light, were left in darkness*. And those who accepted it and received the Holy Spirit which
attended the proclamation of the message from heaven, and *who afterward renounced their
faith and pronounced their experience a delusion, thereby rejected the Spirit of God, and it
no longer pleaded with them*.” – {Selected Messages, book 1, pg.63.3-9}

THE THIRD ANGEL’S MESSAGE AND THE PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS REPEATED TO
THE VERLY LATTER.

When the third angel's message is preached as it should be, power attends its proclamation, and it
becomes an abiding influence. It must be attended with divine power, or it will accomplish nothing. I
am often referred to the parable of the ten virgins, five of whom were wise, and five foolish. This
parable has been and will be fulfilled to the very letter, for it has a special application to this
time, and, like the third angel's message, has been fulfilled and will continue to be present truth
till the close of time. In the parable, the ten virgins had lamps, but only five of them had the saving
oil with which to keep their lamps burning. This represents the condition of the Church. The wise
and the foolish have their Bibles, and are provided with all the means of grace; but many do not
appreciate the fact that they must have the heavenly unction. They do not heed the invitation, "Come
unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and

learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is
easy, and my burden is light." {RH, August 19, 1890 par. 3}
WHEN WILL THE PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS REPEATED

Many who heard the first and second angels' messages thought they would live to see Christ coming
in the clouds of heaven. Had all who claimed to believe the truth acted their part as wise virgins, the
message would ere this have been proclaimed to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. But five
were wise and five were foolish. The truth should have been proclaimed by the ten virgins, but only
five had made the provision essential to join that company who walked in the light that had come to
them. The third angel's message was needed. This proclamation was to be made. Many who went
forth to meet the Bridegroom under the messages of the first and second angels, refused the
third angel's message, the last testing message to be given to the world. {16MR 269.3}
A similar work will be accomplished when that other angel, represented in Revelation 18,
gives his message. The first, second, and third angels' messages will need to be repeated. The
call will be given to the church, "Come out of her, My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins."
"Babylon, the great, is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every
foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the
wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the
merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. . . . Come out of her,
My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues: for her sins
have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities" [Revelation 18:2-5]. {16MR
270.1}

THE INCREASE OF KNOWLEDGE ON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE PAPACY

“In the first angel's message men are called upon to worship God, our Creator, who made the world
and all things that are therein. They have paid homage to an institution of the Papacy, making of no
effect the law of Jehovah, but there is to be an increase of knowledge on this subject. {2SM 106.1}

THE THIRD ANGEL’S MESSAGE AND THE ACTIVITIES OF THE PAPACY

“The scenes connected with the working of the man of sin are the last features plainly revealed
in this earth’s history. The people now have a special message to give to the world, the third
angel’s message*.” – {Selected Messages, book 2, pg.102.1}
“We have no time to lose. Troublous times are before us. The world is stirred with the spirit of war.
Soon the scenes of trouble spoken of in the prophecies will take place. The prophecy in the eleventh
of Daniel has nearly reached its complete fulfillment. Much of the history that has taken place in
fulfillment of this prophecy will be repeated. In the thirtieth verse a power is spoken of that "shall
be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even
return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.

And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away
the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate. And such as do
wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God
shall be strong, and do exploits. And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet
they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days. Now when they
shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries. And
some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to
the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed. And the king shall do according to his will;
and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvelous things
against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is
determined shall be done.” {13MR 394.1}

“Scenes similar to those described in these words will take place. We see evidence that Satan is
fast obtaining the control of human minds who have not the fear of God before them. Let all read and
understand the prophecies of this book, for we are now entering upon the time of trouble spoken of:
And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy
people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that
same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the
book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and
some to shame and everlasting contempt. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the
firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. But thou, O
Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro,
and knowledge shall be increased. {13MR 394.2}

WILL THE PEOPLE OF GOD HAVE A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THESE

IMPORTANT TRUTHS?

“Before His crucifixion the Saviour explained to His disciples that He was to be put to death and to
rise again from the tomb, and angels were present to impress His words on minds and hearts. But the
disciples were looking for temporal deliverance from the Roman yoke, and they could not tolerate the
thought that He in whom all their hopes centered should suffer an ignominious death. The words
which they needed to remember were banished from their minds; and when the time of trial came, it
found them unprepared. The death of Jesus as fully destroyed their hopes as if He had not forewarned
them. So in the prophecies the future is opened before us as plainly as it was opened to the
disciples by the words of Christ. The events connected with the close of probation and the work
of preparation for the time of trouble, are clearly presented. But multitudes have no more
understanding of these important truths than if they had never been revealed. Satan watches to
catch away every impression that would make them wise unto salvation, and the time of trouble will
find them unready. {GC 594.1}

The disciples had asked the question: "What shall be the sign of Thy coming, and of the end of the
world?" Jesus gave them signs, and said: "When ye shall see all these things, know that it is near,
even at the doors." Verses 3, 33. One saying of the Saviour must not be made to destroy another.
Though no man knoweth the day nor the hour of His coming, we are instructed and required to
know when it is near. We are further taught that to disregard His warning, and refuse or neglect to
know when His advent is near, will be as fatal for us as it was for those who lived in the days of Noah
not to know when the flood was coming. GC 370.2

“The woman (Babylon) of Revelation 17 is described as "arrayed in purple and scarlet color, and
decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of
abominations and filthiness:...and upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon the
Great, the mother of harlots." Says the prophet: "I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints,
and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus." Babylon is further declared to be "that great city, which
reigneth over the kings of the earth." Revelation 17:4-6, 18. The power that for so many centuries
maintained despotic sway over the monarchs of Christendom is Rome. The purple and scarlet
color, the gold and precious stones and pearls, vividly picture the magnificence and more than kingly
pomp affected by the haughty see of Rome. And no other power could be so truly declared "drunken
with the blood of the saints" as that church which has so cruelly persecuted the followers of Christ.
Babylon is also charged with the sin of unlawful connection with "the kings of the earth." It was by
departure from the Lord, and alliance with the heathen, that the Jewish church became a harlot; and
Rome, corrupting herself in like manner by seeking the support of worldly powers, receives a like
condemnation.” {GC 382.2}

WHO IS THE LITERAL KING OF THE SOUTH IN THE BIBLE?

Genesis 12: 9-10. And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south. 10 And there was a famine
in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the
land.

WHO IS THE SPIRITUAL KING OF THE SOUTH IN 1798?

Revelation 11:7-8. And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of
the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. 8 And their
dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt,
where also our Lord was crucified.

“The great city" in whose streets the witnesses are slain, and where their dead bodies lie, is
"spiritually" Egypt. Of all nations presented in Bible history, Egypt most boldly denied the
existence of the living God and resisted His commands. No monarch ever ventured upon more
open and highhanded rebellion against the authority of Heaven than did the king of Egypt. When the
message was brought him by Moses, in the name of the Lord, Pharaoh proudly answered: "Who is
Jehovah, that I should hearken unto His voice to let Israel go? I know not Jehovah, and moreover I
will not let Israel go." Exodus 5:2, A.R.V. This is atheism, and the nation represented by Egypt
would give voice to a similar denial of the claims of the living God and would manifest a like
spirit of unbelief and defiance. "The great city" is also compared, "spiritually," to Sodom. The
corruption of Sodom in breaking the law of God was especially manifested in licentiousness. And this
sin was also to be a pre-eminent characteristic of the nation that should fulfill the specifications of
this scripture. According to the words of the prophet, then, a little before the year 1798 some power
of satanic origin and character would rise to make war upon the Bible. And in the land where the
testimony of God's two witnesses should thus be silenced, there would be manifest the atheism of the
Pharaoh and the licentiousness of Sodom.
“This prophecy has received a most exact and striking fulfillment in the history of France.
During the Revolution, in 1793, "the world for the first time heard an assembly of men, born and
educated in civilization, and assuming the right to govern one of the finest of the European nations,
uplift their united voice to deny the most solemn truth which man's soul receives, and renounce
unanimously the belief and worship of a Deity."--Sir Walter Scott, Life of Napoleon, vol. 1, ch. 17.
"France is the only nation in the world concerning which the authentic record survives, that as a
nation she lifted her hand in open rebellion against the Author of the universe. Plenty of blasphemers,
plenty of infidels, there have been, and still continue to be, in England, Germany, Spain, and
elsewhere; but France stands apart in the world's history as the single state which, by the decree of her
Legislative Assembly, pronounced that there was no God, and of which the entire population of the
capital, and a vast majority elsewhere, women as well as men, danced and sang with joy in accepting
the announcement."--Blackwood's Magazine, November, 1870. {GC 269-270}

Jude 1:7. Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving
themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example,
suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

“France presented also the characteristics which especially distinguished Sodom. During the
Revolution there was manifest a state of moral debasement and corruption similar to that which
brought destruction upon the cities of the plain. And the historian presents together the atheism and

the licentiousness of France, as given in the prophecy: "Intimately connected with these laws
affecting religion, was that which reduced the union of marriage--the most sacred engagement
which human beings can form, and the permanence of which leads most strongly to the consolidation
of society--to the state of a mere civil contract of a transitory character, which any two persons might
engage in and cast loose at pleasure. . . . If fiends had set themselves to work to discover a mode of
most effectually destroying whatever is venerable, graceful, or permanent in domestic life, and of
obtaining at the same time an assurance that the mischief which it was their object to create should be
perpetuated from one generation to another, they could not have invented a more effectual plan that
the degradation of marriage. . . . “ {GC 270}

"Where also our Lord was crucified." This specification of the prophecy was also fulfilled by
France. In no land had the spirit of enmity against Christ been more strikingly displayed. In no
country had the truth encountered more bitter and cruel opposition. In the persecution which France
had visited upon the confessors of the gospel, she had crucified Christ in the person of His
disciples.
“Century after century the blood of the saints had been shed. While the Waldenses laid down their
lives upon the mountains of Piedmont "for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ,"
similar witness to the truth had been borne by their brethren, the Albigenses of France. In the days of
the Reformation its disciples had been put to death with horrible tortures. King and nobles, highborn
women and delicate maidens, the pride and chivalry of the nation, had feasted their eyes upon the
agonies of the martyrs of Jesus. The brave Huguenots, battling for those rights which the human heart
holds most sacred, had poured out their blood on many a hard-fought field. The Protestants were
counted as outlaws, a price was set upon their heads, and they were hunted down like wild beasts.

WHEN AND HOW WAS THIS PROPHECY FULFILLED?

“Did the papacy possess dominion that length of time/ The answer again is, Yes. The edict of the
emperor Justinian, dated A.D.533, made the bishop of Rome the head of all the churches. But this
edict could not go into effect until the Arian Ostrogoths, the last of the three horns that were plucked
up to make room for the papacy, were driven from Rome; and this was not accomplished, as already
shown, till A.D.538. The edict would have been of no effect had this latter event not been
accomplished; hence from this latter year we are to reckon, as this was the earliest point where the
saints were in reality in the hand of this power. From this point did the papacy hold supremacy for
twelve hundred and sixty years? - Exactly. For 538 + 1260 = 1798; and in the year 1798, Berthier,
with a French army, entered Rome, proclaimed a republic, took the pope prisoner, and for a
time abolished the papacy. It has never since enjoyed the privileges and immunities which it
possessed before. Thus again this power fulfils to the very letter the specifications of the prophecy,

“Power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.” And, says the prophet, “I saw one of
his heads as it were wounded to death.” And again, “He that leadeth into captivity shall go into
captivity; he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword.” The forty and two months are
the same as the “time and times and the dividing of time,” three years and a half, or 1260 days, of
Daniel 7,—the time during which the papal power was to oppress God's people. This period, as stated
in preceding chapters, began with the establishment of the papacy, A. D. 538, and terminated in 1798.
At that time, when the papacy was abolished and the pope made captive by the French army,
the papal power received its deadly wound, and the prediction was fulfilled, “He that leadeth into
captivity shall go into captivity.” {GC88 439.2}

The influence of Rome in the countries that once acknowledged her dominion is still far from being
destroyed. And prophecy foretells a restoration of her power. "I saw one of his heads as it were
wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast ."
Verse 3. The infliction of the deadly wound points to the downfall of the papacy in 1798. After
this, says the prophet, "his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast."
Paul states plainly that the "man of sin" will continue until the second advent. 2 Thessalonians
2:3-8. To the very close of time he will carry forward the work of deception. And the revelator
declares, also referring to the papacy: "All that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names
are not written in the book of life." Revelation 13:8. In both the Old and the New World, the papacy
will receive homage in the honor paid to the Sunday institution, that rests solely upon the authority of
the Roman Church. {DD 27.1}

1. Also Daniel 11:40B takes place at the time of the end.
2. France wore the crown of king of the south in 1798. Yet after the French Revolution the
philosophy of atheism continued to grow, while the government of France moved away from
atheism as a fundamental principle of its government.
3. France become the king of the south from 1793 during the French revolution which ended in
1799 and within this period of one year (1798-1799) we did not see the papacy revenging
against France.
4. When the papacy comes against the king of the south, he enters into the countries and
overflows and pass over. France is not made of countries.
WHO IS THE SPIRITUAL KING OF THE SOUTH IN DANIEL 11:40B, AND HOW DID
THE TRANSITION TAKE PLACE?

Beginning with the French Revolution, atheism placed the palace of the “king of the south” in France;
however, by 1917, atheism moved the palace of the southern king to Russia in the wake of the
Bolshevik Revolution (communism revolutions).
After World War II Russia expanded into the Soviet Union. All the countries which were eventually
brought under the umbrella of the Soviet Union had previously been Catholic dominated nations. One
by one, Catholicism was losing its power base. As communism’s revolutions spread throughout the
world, the Papacy was provided with a tool to identify the Soviet Union as a common enemy
On November 7, 1917, the Soviet Government came into power. Its advent was characterised by an
immediate and radical alteration of the whole social structure of the State achieved by publication
within a short time of a number of Decrees affecting most fundamentally various spheres of social
and economic life.

The first Soviet laws affecting marriage and divorce were two Decrees, one published on
December 19, 1917, on divorce, and the other published on December 20, 1917, on civil marriage In
complete reversal of the principle of religious marriages the first words of the new Decree on
marriage are: “The Russian Republic in future will recognise only civil marriages. . . .’ Children born
out of wedlock were granted in every respect the same rights as legitimate children.
Not less radical was the change in the divorce laws. It was the local civil courts who were now
entrusted with divorce jurisdiction and a marriage could be dissolved by mutual consent of the

2. The papacy had three obstacles to conquer at his first rise, how did he conquer them?. This
was possible through making alliances with state powers that grant him both the military and

HAS THIS EVER HAPPENED IN OUR DAY AGE WHERE THE PAPACY UNITED WITH
STATE POWER INORDER TO ATTACK RUSSIA?

Monday, June 7, 1982. It was the first time the two had met, and they talked for 50 minutes. . . . In
that meeting, Reagan and the pope agreed to undertake a clandestine campaign to hasten the

Advisor: “This was one of the great secret alliances of all time.”. . . . “Reagan came with very simple

fathers. 19 But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a
goodly heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt not turn

Deuteronomy 3:25. I pray thee, let me go over, and see the good land that is beyond Jordan, that

WHY DID GOD GIVE THE ISREALITES THIS PLEASANT LAND?

Psalm 105:42-45. For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham his servant. 43 And he brought
forth his people with joy, and his chosen with gladness: 44 And gave them the lands of the heathen:
and they inherited the labour of the people; 45 That they might observe his statutes, and keep his

state, in order that they might enjoy the simple fruits that were given to Adam and Eve in Eden. He
was about to establish them in a second Eden, a goodly land, where they might enjoy the fruits and

WHAT IS THE SPIRTUAL GLORIOUS LAND BEYOND 1798 THAT GOD GAVE TO
SPIRTUAL ISREAL?

“The Lord has done more for the United States than for any other country upon which the sun shines.
Here He provided an asylum for His people, where they could worship Him according to the
dictates of conscience. Here Christianity has progressed in its purity. The life giving doctrine of the
one Mediator between God and man has been freely taught. God designed that this country should
ever remain free for all people to worship Him in accordance with the dictates of conscience. He
designed that its civil institutions, in their expansive productions, should represent the freedom of
gospel privileges. {Mar 193}

“The greatest and most favored nation upon the earth is the United States. A gracious Providence has
shielded this country, and poured upon her the choicest of Heaven's blessings. Here the persecuted
and oppressed have found refuge. Here the Christian faith in its purity has been taught. This people
have been the recipients of great light and unrivaled mercies. But these gifts have been repaid by
ingratitude and forgetfulness of God. The Infinite One keeps a reckoning with the nations, and their
guilt is proportioned to the light rejected. A fearful record now stands in the register of Heaven
against our land; but the crime which shall fill up the measure of her iniquity is that of making void
the law of God. {4SP 398.1}

“The mystery of iniquity, which had already begun to work in Paul's day, will continue its work until
it be taken out of the way at our Lord's second coming. The climax of the working of iniquity will
soon be reached. When the land which the Lord provided as an asylum for his people, that they
might worship him according to the dictates of their own consciences , the land over which for long
years the shield of Omnipotence has been spread, the land which God has favored by making it the
depository of the pure religion of Christ,--when that land shall, through its legislators, abjure the
principles of Protestantism, and give countenance to Romish apostasy in tampering with God's law,--
it is then that the final work of the man of sin will be revealed. Protestants will throw their whole
influence and strength on the side of the Papacy; by a national act enforcing the false Sabbath, they
will give life and vigor to the corrupt faith of Rome, reviving her tyranny and oppression of

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ENTER INTO THE USA?

NB.
1. In the quotes above USA is identified as Glorious land/nation which provided an asylum for His
people, where they could worship Him according to the dictates of conscience. This fulfilled the
prophecy of Rev 13:11 where it’s identified as a lamb like beast.
2. It’s should be noted that later this lamb like beast speaks like a dragon and begin to behave and
work on the principles of the first beast (papacy) as it is brought to view in verse below.

Rev 13:12-15.And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth
and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13And
he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of
men, 14And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by [the means of] those miracles which he had
power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make
an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. 15And he had power to give
life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as
many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

3. This means that time will come were USA will repudiate its constitution which supports the
freedom of worship and adopt the principles of Papacy to the extent that it cause the earth to
worship the Papacy in terms of enforcing Sunday worship which an institution of the Papacy.
Thus the papacy will have entered into the USA.

“By the decree enforcing the institution of the papacy in violation of the law of God, our nation will
disconnect herself fully from righteousness. When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf
to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with
spiritualism, when, under the influence of this threefold union, our country shall repudiate every
principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and republican government, and shall make
provision for the propagation of papal falsehoods and delusions, then we may know that the time
has come for the marvelous working of Satan and that the end is near.” {Mar 216}

“When the leading churches of the United States, uniting upon such points of doctrine as are held
by them in common, shall influence the state to enforce their decrees and to sustain their
institutions, then Protestant America will have formed an image of the Roman hierarchy, and
the infliction of civil penalties upon dissenters will inevitably result.

“The beast with two horns "causeth [commands] all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and
bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: and that no man might buy or sell,
save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name." Revelation 13:16, 17.
The third angel's warning is: "If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his
forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God." "The beast"
mentioned in this message, whose worship is enforced by the two-horned beast, is the first, or
leopardlike beast of Revelation 13 -- the papacy. The "image to the beast" represents that form
of apostate Protestantism which will be developed when the Protestant churches shall seek the
aid of the civil power for the enforcement of their dogmas. The "mark of the beast" still remains to
be defined.
“As the sign of the authority of the Catholic Church, papist writers cite "the very act of changing
the Sabbath into Sunday, which Protestants allow of; . . . because by keeping Sunday, they
acknowledge the church's power to ordain feasts, and to command them under sin."—Henry
Tuberville, An Abridgment of the Christian Doctrine, page 58. What then is the change of the
Sabbath, but the sign, or mark, of the authority of the Roman Church--"the mark of the
beast"? {GC 445, 448}

“There are many, even of those engaged in this movement for Sunday enforcement, who are blinded
to the results which will follow this action. They do not see that they are striking directly against
religious liberty. There are many who have never understood the claims of the Bible Sabbath and the
false foundation upon which the Sunday institution rests. Any movement in favor of religious
legislation is really an act of concession to the papacy, which for so many ages has steadily warred
against liberty of conscience. Sunday observance owes its existence as a so-called Christian
institution to "the mystery of iniquity;" and its enforcement will be a virtual recognition of the
principles which are the very cornerstone of Romanism. When our nation shall so abjure the
principles of its government as to enact a Sunday law, Protestantism will in this act join hands with
popery; it will be nothing else than giving life to the tyranny which has long been eagerly watching
its opportunity to spring again into active despotism. {5T,711.4}

WHAT SHALL HAPPEN TO THE USA WHEN IT SHALL PASS SUNDAY LAW?

“The people of the United States have been a favored people; but when they restrict religious liberty,
surrender Protestantism, and give countenance to popery, the measure of their guilt will be full, and
"national apostasy" will be registered in the books of heaven. The result of this apostasy will be
national ruin.

“With rapid steps we are approaching this period. When Protestant churches shall unite with the
secular power to sustain a false religion, for opposing which their ancestors endured the fiercest
persecution, then will the papal Sabbath be enforced by the combined authority of church and state.
There will be a national apostasy, which will end only in national ruin. {Bible Training School,
February 1, 1913 par.6}

WHO ARE MANY THAT ARE OVERTHROWN?

Proverbs 12:7.The wicked are overthrown, and [are] not: but the house of the righteous shall stand.

Proverbs 14:11.The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tabernacle of the upright shall
flourish.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE OVERTHROWN?

Jeremiah. 18:23. Yet, LORD, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay [me]: forgive not
their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee;
deal [thus] with them in the time of thine anger.

Amos 4:11.I have overthrown [some] of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye
were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

NB. In verse 41 there is class people that is destroyed/judged (closes its probation) but we know the
judgment of all the human race end when Jesus stands up in Daniel 12:1. Therefore this should raise
question below.

WHICH CLASS OF PEOPLE IS OVERTHROWN WHEN THE PAPACY ENTERS THE

GLORIOUS LAND?

Ezekiel 9:6. Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not
near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient
men which were before the house.

1 Peter 4:17. For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin
at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

“We are to be ready and waiting for the orders of God. Nations will be stirred to their very center.
Support will be withdrawn from those who proclaim God's only standard of righteousness, the only

3. The word “escape” here in the Hebrew means that these countries that constitute Egypt at the end
of the world shall not find deliverance. They shall not escape out of the papacy’s hand in like manner

Never did this message apply with greater force than it applies today. More and more the world is
setting at naught the claims of God. Men have become bold in transgression. The wickedness of the
inhabitants of the world has almost filled up the measure of their iniquity. This earth has almost
reached the place where God will permit the destroyer to work his will upon it. The substitution of the
laws of men for the law of God, the exaltation, by merely human authority, of Sunday in place of the
Bible Sabbath, is the last act in the drama. When this substitution becomes universal, God will
reveal Himself. He will arise in His majesty to shake terribly the earth. He will come out of His
place to punish the inhabitants of the world for their iniquity, and the earth shall disclose her
blood, and shall no more cover her slain.--Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 141.

THE STANDING UP OF MICHAEL:

STANDING UP OF MICHAEL = TIME OF TROUBLE/CLOSE OF PROBATION:

time thy people shall be delivered, everyone that shall be found written in the book." When this time of trouble

powers of earth that are marshaled by the dragon host, make God their defense. The decree has been passed by
the highest earthly authority that they shall worship the beast and receive his mark under pain of persecution
and death. May God help His people now, for what can they then do in such a fearful conflict without His

CLOSING REMARKS

I was shown that if God's people make no efforts on their part, but wait for the refreshing to come
upon them and remove their wrongs and correct their errors; if they depend upon that to cleanse them
from filthiness of the flesh and spirit, and fit them to engage in the loud cry of the third angel, they
will be found wanting.--1T 619 (1867). {LDE 195.1}

in the church who are not converted, and who will not unite in earnest, prevailing prayer. We must

THE SEVEN THUNDERS AND THE MILLERITE HISTORY

The special light given to John which was expressed in the seven thunders was a delineation of
events which would transpire under the first and second angels' messages. It was not best for
the people to know these things, for their faith must necessarily be tested. In the order of God
most wonderful and advanced truths would be proclaimed. The first and second angels' messages
were to be proclaimed, but no further light was to be revealed before these messages had done their
specific work. This is represented by the Angel standing with one foot on the sea, proclaiming with a
most solemn oath that time should be no longer. {19MR 320.3}
WHAT IS NUMBER SEVEN A SYMBOL OF IN PROPHECY?
The names of the seven churches are symbolic of the church in different periods of the Christian Era.
The number 7 indicates completeness, and is symbolic of the fact that the messages extend to the
end of time, while the symbols used reveal the condition of the church at different periods in the
history of the world. {AA 585.3}

THE FIRST AND THE SECON ANGEL’S MESSAGE AND THE MILLERITE HISTORY

PERIOD OF DARKNESS 1260-DARK AGES

Today the church of God is free to carry forward to completion the divine plan for the salvation
of a lost race. For many centuries God's people suffered a restriction of their liberties. The
preaching of the gospel in its purity was prohibited, and the severest of penalties were visited
upon those who dared disobey the mandates of men. As a consequence, the Lord's great moral
vineyard was almost wholly unoccupied. The people were deprived of the light of God's word.
The darkness of error and superstition threatened to blot out a knowledge of true religion.
God's church on earth was as verily in captivity during this long period of relentless
persecution as were the children of Israel held captive in Babylon during the period of the
exile. {PK 714.1}

The accession of the Roman Church to power marked the beginning of the Dark Ages. As her
power increased, the darkness deepened. Faith was transferred from Christ, the true foundation,
to the pope of Rome. Instead of trusting in the Son of God for forgiveness of sins and for eternal
salvation, the people looked to the pope, and to the priests and prelates to whom he delegated
authority. GC 55.1

“The “man of sin,” which is also styled “the mystery of iniquity,” “the son of perdition,”
and “that wicked,” represents the papacy, which, as foretold in prophecy, was to maintain its
supremacy *for 1260 years*. This period ended in *1798*. The coming of Christ could not take
place before that time. Paul covers with his caution the whole of the Christian dispensation down

to the year 1798. It is this side of that time that the message of Christ’s second coming is to be
proclaimed.” – {Great Controversy, pg.356.1}

1798 THE PAPACY RECEIVED A DEADLY WOUND. Daniel 11:40a.

Daniel 11:40. And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king
of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with
many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.

1798 [TIME OF THE END]-FIRST ANGEL’S ARRIVES

Daniel 12:4. But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and *seal the book, [even] to the time of the
end*: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

“No such message has ever been given in past ages. Paul, as we have seen, did not preach it; he
pointed his brethren into the then far-distant future for the coming of the Lord. The Reformers did
not proclaim it. Martin Luther placed the judgment about three hundred years in the future from
his day. But since *1798 the book of Daniel has been unsealed*, knowledge of the prophecies
has increased, and many have proclaimed the solemn message of the judgment near. {GC88
356.2}

INCREASE OF KNOWLEDGE. 1816-1818

Daniel 8:14. “And he said unto me, unto *two thousand and three hundred days*; then shall
the sanctuary be cleansed”.

In 1816 he set about to give careful study to the word of God, and his study led him to the great
time prophecies and the prophecies relating to the Second Advent. He concluded that the
second coming of Christ was near. After reviewing his positions over a period of years and
assuring himself as to their certainty, *he responded in early August, 1831, to an invitation to
publicly present his views on the prophecies*. From then on his time was devoted largely to
the heralding of the Advent message. In due time he was joined by hundreds of other Protestant
ministers who participated in the great Advent Awakening of the 1840’s. EW 303.1

FORMALISATION OF THE MESSAGE 1831-1833

*“In 1833 Miller received a license to preach, from the Baptist Church, of which he was a
member*. A large number of the ministers of his denomination also approved his work, and *it
was with their formal sanction that he continued his labors*. He traveled and preached
unceasingly, though his personal labors were confined principally to the New England and
Middle States. In 1833, two years after Miller began to present in public the evidences of Christ’s
soon coming, the last of the signs appeared which were promised by the Saviour as tokens of His
second advent. Said Jesus: “*The stars shall fall from heaven*.” Matthew 24:29. And John in
the Revelation declared, as he beheld in vision the scenes that should herald the day of God:

“*The stars of heaven fell unto the earth*, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when
she is shaken of a mighty wind.” Revelation 6:13. This prophecy received a striking and
impressive fulfillment in the great meteoric shower of November 13, 1833. That was the most
extensive and wonderful display of falling stars which has ever been recorded; “the whole
firmament, over all the United States, being then, for hours, in fiery commotion!” {GC, pg.332.1,
333.1}.

“As early as 1826 the advent message began to be preached in England. The movement here did
not take so definite a form as in America; the exact time of the advent was not so generally
taught, but the great truth of Christ’s soon coming in power and glory was extensively
proclaimed…*To William Miller and his colaborers it was given to preach the warning in
America*. This country became the center of the great advent movement. *It was here that the
prophecy of the first angel’s message had its most direct fulfillment*. The writings of Miller
and his associates were carried to distant lands. Wherever missionaries had penetrated in all the
world, were sent the glad tidings of Christ’s speedy return. *Far and wide spread the message
of the everlasting gospel: “Fear God and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is
come.*”” – {Great Controversy, pg.362.2, 368.1}

THE MESSAGE RESISTED.

*“The proclamation of a definite time for Christ’s coming called forth great opposition
from many of all classes*, from the minister in the pulpit down to the most reckless, Heaven-
daring sinner. The words of prophecy were fulfilled: “There shall come in the last days scoffers,
walking after their own lusts, and saying, where is the promise of His coming? for since the
fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” 2 Peter
3:3, 4. Many who professed to love the Saviour declared that they had no opposition to the
doctrine of the Second Advent; *they merely objected to the definite time*. But God’s all
Seeing Eye read their hearts. They did not wish to hear of Christ’s coming to judge the world in
righteousness…….. {GC, pg.370.1}

“Some ministers laid aside their sectarian views and feelings, left their salaries and their
churches, and united in proclaiming the coming of Jesus. There were comparatively few
ministers, however, who would accept this message; *therefore it was largely committed to
humble laymen*. Farmers left their fields, mechanics their tools, traders their merchandise,
professional men their positions; and yet the number of workers was small in comparison with
the work to be accomplished. *The condition of an ungodly church and a world lying in
wickedness, burdened the souls of the true watchmen* and they willingly endured toil,
privation, and suffering, that they might call men to repentance unto salvation. Though opposed
by Satan, the work went steadily forward, and the advent truth was accepted by many thousands.”
– {Great Controversy, pg.368.2}

THE FIRST ANGEL’S MESSAGE EMPOWERED

*“In the year 1840 another remarkable fulfillment of prophecy excited widespread
interest*. Two years before, Josiah Litch, one of the leading ministers preaching the Second

Advent, published an exposition of Revelation 9, predicting the fall of the Ottoman Empire.
According to his calculations, this power was to be overthrown “in A.D. 1840, sometime in the
month of August;” and only a few days previous to its accomplishment he wrote: “Allowing the
first period, 150 years, to have been exactly fulfilled before Deacozes ascended the throne by
permission of the Turks, and that the 391 years, fifteen days, commenced at the close of the first
period, it will end on the 11th of August, 1840, when the Ottoman power in Constantinople may
be expected to be broken. And this, I believe, will be found to be the case.”—Josiah Litch, in
Signs of the Times, and Expositor of Prophecy, August 1, 1840.

At the very time specified, Turkey, through her ambassadors, accepted the protection of the allied
powers of Europe, and thus placed her under the control of Christian nations. The event exactly
fulfilled the prediction. (See Appendix.) *When it became known, multitudes were convinced
of the correctness of the principles of prophetic interpretation adopted by Miller and his
associates, and a wonderful impetus was given to the advent movement*. Men of learning
and position united with Miller, both in preaching and in publishing his views, and from 1840 to
1844 the work rapidly extended.”” – {GC 335.1}

DESCENDING OF THE ANGEL OF REV 10 ON 11THOF AUGUST 1840?

“The message of Revelation 14, proclaiming that the hour of God’s judgment is come, is given in
the time of the end. *The angel of Revelation 10* is represented as having one foot on the sea
and one foot on the land, *showing that the message will be carried to distant lands*, the
ocean will be crossed, and the islands of the sea will hear the proclamation of the last message of
warning to our world....*“That there should be time no longer.” This message announces the
end of the prophetic periods.* The disappointment of those who expected to see our Lord in 1844
was indeed bitter to those who had so ardently looked for His appearing.* It was in the Lord’s
order that this disappointment should come, and that hearts should be revealed*.” – {Christ
Triumphant, pg.340.2, 3}

The mighty angel who instructed John was no less a personage than Jesus Christ. Setting His
right foot on the sea, and His left upon the dry land, shows the part which He is acting in the
closing scenes of the great controversy with Satan. This position denotes His supreme power
and authority over the whole earth. The controversy had waxed stronger and more determined
from age to age, and will continue to do so, to the concluding scenes when the masterly working
of the powers of darkness shall reach their height. Satan, united with evil men, will deceive the
whole world and the churches who receive not the love of the truth. But the mighty angel
demands attention. He cries with a loud voice. He is to show the power and authority of His voice
to those who have united with Satan to oppose the truth. {7BC 971.3}

“*The advent movement of 1840-44*was a glorious manifestation of the power of God; *the
first angel’s message was carried to every missionary station in the world*, and in some
countries there was the greatest religious interest which has been witnessed in any land since the
Reformation of the sixteenth century;…”– {Great Controversy, pg.611.1}

1842 MAY FOUNDATIONS WERE LAID-1843 CHART.

*“As early as 1842, the Spirit of God had moved upon Charles Fitch to devise the prophetic
chart*, which was generally regarded by Adventists as a fulfillment of the command given by
the prophet Habakkuk, “to write the vision and make it plain upon tables.” No one, however, then
saw the tarrying time, which was brought to view in the same prophecy. After the
disappointment, the full meaning of this scripture became apparent. Thus speaks the prophet:
“Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is
yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it;
because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” [Habakkuk 2:2, 3.]” – {Spirit of Prophecy,
pg.241.2}

*“I have seen that the 1843 chart was directed by the hand of the Lord*, and that it should
*not be altered; that the figures were as He wanted them*; that His hand was over and hid a
mistake in some of the figures, so that none could see it, until His hand was removed.” – {Early
Writings, pg.74.1}

The jewels on the 1843, is the truth the millerites received in 1840-1844 and inspiration identifies
them the foundations of the seventhday Adventists.

“The warning has come: Nothing is to be allowed to come in that will disturb the *foundation of
the faith upon which we have been building ever since the message came in 1842, 1843, and
1844*. I was in this message, and ever since I have been standing before the world, true to the
light that God has given us. We do not propose to take our feet off the platform on which they
were placed as day by day we sought the Lord with earnest prayer, seeking for light. Do you
think that I could give up the light that God has given me? *It is to be as the Rock of Ages*. It
has been guiding me ever since it was given. …… {Review and Herald, April 14, 1903 Par. 35}

THE ENEMIES FAUGHT AGAINST THE FOUNDATIONS

*“In June, 1842*, Mr. Miller gave his second course of lectures in Portland. I felt it a great
privilege to attend these lectures, for I had fallen under discouragements and did not feel prepared
to meet my Saviour. This second course created much more excitement in the city than the first.
*With few exceptions the different denominations closed the doors of their churches against
Mr. Miller. Many discourses from the various pulpits sought to expose the alleged fanatical
errors of the lecturer*; but crowds of anxious listeners attended his meetings, while many were
unable to enter the house.” – {Testimonies for the Church, vol.1, pg.21.1}

“I had never been positive as to any particular day for the Lord's appearing, believing that no
man could know the day and hour. In all my published lectures will be seen, on the title page,
'about the year 1843.' In all my oral lectures I invariably told my audiences that the periods would
terminate in 1843* if there were no mistakes in my calculation*; but that I could not say the
end might not come even before that time, and they should be continually prepared. In 1842,
some of my brethren *preached, with great positiveness, the exact year, and censured me for
putting in an IF*. The public press had also published that I had fixed upon a definite day, the

23rd of April, for the Lord's advent. Therefore, in December of that year, as I could see no error
in my reckoning, I “published my belief, that, sometime between March 21, 1843, and March 21,
1844, the Lord would come. Some had their minds fixed on particular days; but I could see no
evidence for such, unless the types of the Mosaic law pointed to the Feast of Tabernacles.
"*During the year 1843, the most violent denunciations were heaped upon me, and those
associated with me, by the press and some pulpits. Our motives were assailed, our
principles misrepresented, and our characters traduced.”* – {Sylvester Bliss, Memoirs of
William Miller, pg.329.2, 3}

19TH /04/1844 THE FIRST DISAPPOINTMENT AND THE ARRIVAL OF THE SECOND
ANGEL’S MESSAGE.

I saw the people of God joyful in expectation, looking for their Lord. But God designed to prove
them. His hand covered a mistake in the reckoning of the prophetic periods. Those who were
looking for their Lord did not discover this mistake, and the most learned men who opposed the
time also failed to see it. God designed that His people should meet with a disappointment.
The time passed, and those who had looked with joyful expectation for their Saviour were
sad and disheartened, while those who had not loved the appearing of Jesus, but embraced the
message through fear, were pleased that He did not come at the time of expectation. Their
profession had not affected the heart and purified the life. The passing of the time was well
calculated to reveal such hearts. They were the first to turn and ridicule the sorrowful,
disappointed ones who really loved the appearing of their Saviour. I saw the wisdom of God in
proving His people and giving them a searching test to discover those who would shrink and turn
back in the hour of trial. {EW 235.3}

God tested and proved His people by the passing of the time in 1843. The mistake made in
reckoning the prophetic periods was not at once discovered, even by learned men who opposed
the views of those who were looking for Christ’s coming. *Scholars declared that Mr. Miller
was right in his calculation of the time*, though they disputed him in regard to the event that
would crown that period. But they, and the waiting people of God, were in a common error on the
question of time. *Those who had been disappointed were not long left in darkness; for in
searching the prophetic periods with earnest prayer the error was discovered, and the tracing
of the prophetic pencil down through the tarrying time*. In the joyful expectation of the coming
of Christ, *the apparent tarrying of the vision had not been taken into account*, and was a
sad and unlooked-for surprise.*Yet this very trial was necessary to develop and strengthen
the sincere believers in the truth*. Our hopes now centered on the coming of the Lord in 1844.
This was also the time for the message of the second angel, who, *flying through the midst of
heaven, cried, “Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city.” Revelation 14:8.”* – {Christian
Experiences and Teachings, pg.50.2-4}

“Those, whose hearts burned with a longing, intense desire to see Jesus, *were forbidden by
their professed brethren to speak of his coming*. Angels viewed the whole scene, and
sympathized with the remnant, who loved the appearing of Jesus. Another mighty angel was

commissioned to descend to earth. Jesus placed in his hand a writing, and as he came to earth,
*he cried, Babylon is fallen! is fallen!* Then I saw *the disappointed ones* again look
cheerful, and raise their eyes to heaven, looking with faith and hope for their Lord’s appearing.
But many seemed to remain in a stupid state, as if asleep; yet I could see the trace of deep sorrow
upon their countenances. *The disappointed ones saw from the Bible that they were in the
tarrying time*, and that they must patiently wait the fulfillment of the vision. *The same
evidence which led them to look for their Lord in 1843, led them to expect him in 1844*. I
saw that the *majority did not possess that energy which marked their faith in 1843*.Their
disappointment had dampened their faith. But as the disappointed ones united in the cry of the
second angel, the heavenly host looked with the deepest interest, and marked the effect of the
message. They saw those who bore the name of Christians turn with derision and scorn upon
those who had been disappointed. As the words fell from the mocker’s lips, You have not gone
up yet! an angel wrote them. Said the angel, They mock God.” – {Spiritual Gifts, vol. 1,
pg.153.1}

FORMALISATION OF THE MESSAGE [MIDNIGHT-21/JULY/1844]

“While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry
made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and
trimmed their lamps.” Matthew 25:5-7. *In the summer of 1844, midway between the time
when it had been first thought that the 2300 days would end, and the autumn of the same
year, to which it was afterward found that they extended, the message was proclaimed in
the very words of Scripture: “Behold, the Bridegroom cometh!* ” That which led to this
movement was the *discovery that the decree of Artaxerxes for the restoration of
Jerusalem*, which formed the starting point for the period of the 2300 days, went into effect in
the autumn of the year 457 B.C., and not at the beginning of the year, as had been formerly
believed. Reckoning from the autumn of 457, the 2300 years terminate in the autumn of 1844.
(See Appendix note for page 329.)” – {Great Controversy, pg.398.3, 4}

-EMPOWERMENT OF THE SECOND ANGEL’S MESSAGE [MIDNIGHT CRY

15-17/AUGUST /1844]

Near the close of the second angel's message, [SEE APPENDIX.] I saw a great light from
heaven shining upon the people of God. The rays of this light seemed bright as the sun. And I
heard the voices of angels crying, "Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet Him!"
{EW 238.1}
This was the midnight cry, which was to give power to the second angel's message.
Angels were sent from heaven to arouse the discouraged saints and prepare them for the great
work before them. The most talented men were not the first to receive this message. Angels were
sent to the humble, devoted ones, and constrained them to raise the cry, "Behold, the Bridegroom
cometh; go ye out to meet Him!" Those entrusted with the cry made haste, and in the power of
the Holy Spirit sounded the message, and aroused their discouraged brethren. This work did not
stand in the wisdom and learning of men, but in the power of God, and His saints who heard the

cry could not resist it. The most spiritual received this message first, and those who had formerly
led in the work were the last to receive and help swell the cry, "Behold, the Bridegroom cometh;
go ye out to meet Him!" {EW 238.2}

“In the parable of Matthew 25 the *time of waiting and slumber is followed by the coming of
the bridegroom*. This was in accordance with the arguments just presented, both from prophecy
and from the types. *They carried strong conviction of their truthfulness; and the “midnight
cry” was heralded by thousands of believers*. Like *a tidal wave the movement swept over
the land. From city to city, from village to village, and into remote country places it went*,
until the waiting people of God were fully aroused. Fanaticism disappeared before this
proclamation like early frost before the rising sun. *Believers saw their doubt and perplexity
removed, and hope and courage animated their hearts*. The work was free from those
extremes which are ever manifested when there is human excitement without the controlling
influence of the word and Spirit of God. It was similar in character to those seasons of
humiliation and returning unto the Lord which among ancient Israel followed messages of
reproof from His servants. It bore the characteristics that mark the work of God in every age.
*There was little ecstatic joy, but rather deep searching of heart, confession of sin, and
forsaking of the world*. A preparation to meet the Lord was the burden of agonizing spirits.
*There was persevering prayer and unreserved consecration to God*.” – {Great
Controversy, pg.400.2}

“The midnight cry was not so much carried by argument, though the Scripture proof was clear
and conclusive. *There went with it an impelling power that moved the soul*. There was no
doubt, no questioning. *Upon the occasion of Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem*, the
people who were assembled from all parts of the land to keep the feast, flocked to the Mount of
Olives, and as they joined the throng that were escorting Jesus, they caught the inspiration of the
hour, and helped to swell the shout, “Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord!”
[Matthew 21:9.] In like manner did unbelievers who flocked to the Adventist meetings—some
from curiosity, some merely to ridicule—*feel the convincing power attending the message*,
“Behold, the Bridegroom cometh!”” – {Spirit of Prophecy, vol.4, pg.250.3}

“In every part of the land, light was given upon the second angel’s message, and the cry melted
the hearts of thousands. It went from city to city, and from village to village, until the waiting
people of God were fully aroused. *In many churches the message was not permitted to be
given, and a large company who had the living testimony left these fallen churches*. A
*mighty work was accomplished by the midnight cry*. The message was heart-searching,
leading the believers to seek a living experience for themselves. They knew that they could not
lean upon one another.” – {Early Writings, pg.238.3}

THE GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT AND ARRIVAL OF THE THIRD ANGEL’S

MESSAGE. 22/oct/1844

Jesus did not come to the earth as the waiting, joyful company expected, to cleanse the
sanctuary by purifying the earth by fire. I saw that they were correct in their reckoning of the

prophetic periods; prophetic time closed in 1844, and Jesus entered the most holy place to cleanse
the sanctuary at the ending of the days. Their mistake consisted in not understanding what the
sanctuary was and the nature of its cleansing. As I looked again at the waiting, disappointed
company, they appeared sad. They carefully examined the evidences of their faith and
followed down through the reckoning of the prophetic periods, but could discover no
mistake. The time had been fulfilled, but where was their Saviour? They had lost Him. {EW
243.2}
I was shown the disappointment of the disciples as they came to the sepulcher and found not the
body of Jesus. Mary said, "They have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid
Him." Angels told the sorrowing disciples that their Lord had risen, and would go before them into
Galilee. {EW 244.1}
In like manner I saw that Jesus regarded with the deepest compassion the disappointed ones who
had waited for His coming; and He sent His angels to direct their minds that they might follow
Him where He was. He showed them that this earth is not the sanctuary, but that He must enter the
most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary to make an atonement for His people and to receive the
kingdom from His Father, and that He would then return to the earth and take them to dwell with Him
forever. The disappointment of the first disciples well represents the disappointment of those who
expected their Lord in 1844. {EW 244.2}
22/OCT 1844 THIRD ANGEL’S MESSAGE ARRIVED..

*“As the ministration of Jesus closed in the holy place, and He passed into the holiest*, and
stood before the ark containing the law of God, *He sent another mighty angel with a third
message to the world*. A parchment was placed in the angel’s hand, and as he descended to the
earth in power and majesty, he proclaimed a fearful warning, with the most terrible threatening
ever borne to man. This message was designed to put the children of God upon their guard, by
showing them the hour of temptation and anguish that was before them. Said the angel, “*they
will be brought into close combat with the beast and his image*. {EW 251.2}

THIRD ANGEL’S MESSAGE AND SHUT DOOR

There was a shut door/ close of probation to the foolish millerites and this is also testified by the
Matthew 25 the parable of the ten virgins. Only 50 faithful millerites out of 50000 managed to
enter by faith into the Most holy place with Jesus and the door was shut/closed to the 49950
millerites.

“There was a shut door in Noah’s day. There was at that time a withdrawal of the Spirit of God
from the sinful race that perished in the waters of the Flood. God Himself gave the shut door
message to Noah: “My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his
days shall be an hundred and twenty years” (Genesis 6:3). There was a shut door in the days of
Abraham. Mercy ceased to plead with the inhabitants of Sodom, and all but Lot, with his wife
and two daughters were consumed by the fire sent down from heaven. There was a shut door in
Christ’s day. The Son of God declared to the unbelieving Jews of that generation, “Your house is
left unto you desolate” (Matthew 23:38). Looking down the stream of time to the last days, the

same infinite power proclaimed through John: “These things saith he that is holy, he that is true,
he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man
openeth” (Revelation 3:7).* I was shown in vision, and I still believe, that there was a shut
door in 1844*. All who saw the light of the *first and second angels’ messages and rejected
that light, were left in darkness*. And those who accepted it and received the Holy Spirit which
attended the proclamation of the message from heaven, and *who afterward renounced their
faith and pronounced their experience a delusion, thereby rejected the Spirit of God, and it
no longer pleaded with them*.” – {Selected Messages, book 1, pg.63.3-9}

THE ADVENT MOVEMENT ILLUSTRATED

I saw a number of companies that seemed to be bound together by cords. Many
in these companies were in total darkness; their eyes were directed downward to
the earth, and there seemed to be no connection between them and Jesus. But
scattered through these different companies were persons whose countenances
looked light, and whose eyes were raised to heaven. Beams of light from Jesus, like
rays from the sun, were imparted to them. An angel bade me look carefully, and I
saw an angel watching over every one of those who had a ray of light, while evil
angels surrounded those who were in darkness. I heard the voice of an angel cry,
"Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come." {EW
240.1}
A glorious light then rested down upon these companies, to enlighten all who
would receive it. Some of those who were in darkness received the light and
rejoiced. Others resisted the light from heaven, saying that it was sent to lead them
astray. The light passed away from them, and they were left in darkness. Those
who had received the light from Jesus joyfully cherished the increase of precious
light which was shed upon them. Their faces beamed with holy joy, while their gaze
was directed upward to Jesus with intense interest, and their voices were heard in
harmony with the voice of the angel, "Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour
of His judgment is come." As they raised this cry, I saw those who were in darkness
thrusting them with side and with shoulder. Then many who cherished the sacred
light, broke the cords which confined them and stood out separated from those
companies. As they were doing this, men belonging to the different companies and
revered by them passed through, some with pleasing words, and others with
wrathful looks and threatening gestures, and fastened the cords which were
weakening. These men were constantly saying, "God is with us. We stand in the
light. We have the truth." I inquired who these men were, and was told that they
were ministers and leading men who had rejected the light themselves, and were
unwilling that others should receive it. {EW 240.2}
I saw those who cherished the light looking upward with ardent desire,
expecting Jesus to come and take them to Himself. Soon a cloud passed over them,
and their faces were sorrowful. I inquired the cause of this cloud and was shown

that it was their disappointment. The time when they expected their Saviour had
passed, and Jesus had not come. As discouragement settled upon the waiting
ones, the ministers and leading men whom I had before noticed, rejoiced, and all
those who had rejected the light triumphed greatly, while Satan and his evil angels
also exulted. {EW 241.1}
Then I heard the voice of another angel saying, "Babylon is fallen, is fallen!" A
light shone upon those desponding ones, and with ardent desires for His
appearing, they again fixed their eyes upon Jesus. I saw a number of angels
conversing with the one who had cried, "Babylon is fallen," and these united with
him in the cry, "Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet Him." The
musical voices of these angels seemed to reach everywhere. An exceedingly bright
and glorious light shone around those who had cherished the light which had been
imparted to them. Their faces shone with excellent glory, and they united with the
angels in the cry, "Behold, the Bridegroom cometh." As they harmoniously raised
the cry among the different companies, those who rejected the light pushed them
and with angry looks scorned and derided them. But angels of God wafted their
wings over the persecuted ones, while Satan and his angels were seeking to press
their darkness around them, to lead them to reject the light from heaven. {EW
241.2}
Then I heard a voice saying to those who had been pushed and derided, "Come
out from among them, and touch not the unclean." In obedience to this voice, a
large number broke the cords which bound them, and leaving the companies that
were in darkness, joined those who had previously gained their freedom, and
joyfully united their voices with them. I heard the voice of earnest, agonizing prayer
from a few who still remained with the companies that were in darkness. The
ministers and leading men were passing around in these different companies,
fastening the cords more firmly; but still I heard this voice of earnest prayer. Then I
saw those who had been praying reach out their hands for help toward the united
company who were free, rejoicing in God. The answer from them, as they earnestly
looked to heaven, and pointed upward, was, "Come out from among them, and be
separate." I saw individuals struggling for freedom, and at last they broke the cords
that bound them. They resisted the efforts which were made to fasten the cords
tighter and refused to heed the repeated assertions: "God is with us." "We have the
truth with us." {EW 242.1}
Persons were continually leaving the companies that were in darkness and
joining the free company, who appeared to be in an open field raised above the
earth. Their gaze was directed upward, the glory of God rested upon them, and
they joyfully shouted His praise. They were closely united and seemed to be
wrapped in the light of heaven. Around this company were some who came under
the influence of the light, but who were not particularly united to the company. All
who cherished the light shed upon them were gazing upward with intense interest,

and Jesus looked upon them with sweet approbation. They expected Him to come
and longed for His appearing. They did not cast one lingering look to earth. But
again a cloud settled upon the waiting ones, and I saw them turn their weary eyes
downward. I inquired the cause of this change. Said my accompanying angel, "They
are again disappointed in their expectations. Jesus cannot yet come to earth. They
must endure greater trials for His sake. They must give up errors and traditions
received from men and turn wholly to God and His Word. They must be purified,
made white, and tried. Those who endure that bitter trial will obtain an eternal
victory." {EW 243.1}
Jesus did not come to the earth as the waiting, joyful company expected, to
cleanse the sanctuary by purifying the earth by fire. I saw that they were correct in
their reckoning of the prophetic periods; prophetic time closed in 1844, and Jesus
entered the most holy place to cleanse the sanctuary at the ending of the days.
Their mistake consisted in not understanding what the sanctuary was and the
nature of its cleansing. As I looked again at the waiting, disappointed company,
they appeared sad. They carefully examined the evidences of their faith and
followed down through the reckoning of the prophetic periods, but could discover
no mistake. The time had been fulfilled, but where was their Saviour? They had
lost Him. {EW 243.2}
I was shown the disappointment of the disciples as they came to the sepulcher
and found not the body of Jesus. Mary said, "They have taken away my Lord, and I
know not where they have laid Him." Angels told the sorrowing disciples that their
Lord had risen, and would go before them into Galilee. {EW 244.1}
In like manner I saw that Jesus regarded with the deepest compassion the
disappointed ones who had waited for His coming; and He sent His angels to direct
their minds that they might follow Him where He was. He showed them that this
earth is not the sanctuary, but that He must enter the most holy place of the
heavenly sanctuary to make an atonement for His people and to receive the
kingdom from His Father, and that He would then return to the earth and take
them to dwell with Him forever. The disappointment of the first disciples well
represents the disappointment of those who expected their Lord in 1844. {EW
244.2}
I was carried back to the time when Christ rode triumphantly into Jerusalem.
The joyful disciples believed that He was then to take the kingdom and reign a
temporal prince. They followed their King with high hopes. They cut down the
beautiful palm branches, and took off their outer garments, and with enthusiastic
zeal spread them in the way; and some went before, and others followed, crying,
"Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord;
Hosanna in the highest." The excitement disturbed the Pharisees, and they wished
Jesus to rebuke His disciples. But He said unto them, "If these should hold their
peace, the stones would immediately cry out." The prophecy of Zechariah 9:9 must

be fulfilled; yet the disciples were doomed to a bitter disappointment. In a few days
they followed Jesus to Calvary, and beheld Him bleeding and mangled upon the
cruel cross. They witnessed His agonizing death and laid Him in the tomb. Their
hearts sank with grief; their expectations were not realized in a single particular,
and their hopes died with Jesus. But as He arose from the dead and appeared to
His sorrowing disciples, their hopes revived. They had found Him again. {EW
244.3}
I saw that the disappointment of those who believed in the coming of the Lord
in 1844 was not equal to the disappointment of the first disciples. Prophecy was
fulfilled in the first and second angels' messages. They were given at the right time
and accomplished the work which God designed to accomplish by them. {EW
245.1}

ANOTHER ILLUSTRATION
I was shown the interest which all heaven had taken in the work going on upon
the earth. Jesus commissioned a mighty angel to descend and warn the
inhabitants of the earth to prepare for His second appearing. As the angel left the
presence of Jesus in heaven, an exceedingly bright and glorious light went before
him. I was told that his mission was to lighten the earth with his glory and warn
man of the coming wrath of God. Multitudes received the light. Some of these
seemed to be very solemn, while others were joyful and enraptured. All who
received the light turned their faces toward heaven and glorified God. Though it
was shed upon all, some merely came under its influence, but did not heartily
receive it. Many were filled with great wrath. Ministers and people united with the
vile and stoutly resisted the light shed by the mighty angel. But all who received it
withdrew from the world and were closely united with one another. {EW 245.2}
Satan and his angels were busily engaged in seeking to attract the minds of as
many as possible from the light. The company who rejected it were left in darkness.
I saw the angel of God watching with the deepest interest His professed people, to
record the character which they developed as the message of heavenly origin was
presented to them. And as very many who professed love for Jesus turned from the
heavenly message with scorn, derision, and hatred, an angel with a parchment in
his hand made the shameful record. All heaven was filled with indignation that
Jesus should be thus slighted by His professed followers. {EW 246.1}
I saw the disappointment of the trusting ones, as they did not see their Lord at
the expected time. It had been God's purpose to conceal the future and to bring His
people to a point of decision. Without the preaching of definite time for the coming
of Christ, the work designed of God would not have been accomplished. Satan was

leading very many to look far in the future for the great events connected with the
judgment and the end of probation. It was necessary that the people be brought to
seek earnestly for a present preparation. {EW 246.2}
As the time passed, those who had not fully received the light of the angel
united with those who had despised the message, and they turned upon the
disappointed ones with ridicule. Angels marked the situation of Christ's professed
followers. The passing of the definite time had tested and proved them, and very
many were weighed in the balance and found wanting. They loudly claimed to be
Christians, yet in almost every particular failed to follow Christ. Satan exulted at
the state of the professed followers of Jesus.
He had them in his snare. He had led the majority to leave the straight path, and
they were attempting to climb up to heaven some other way. Angels saw the pure
and holy mixed up with sinners in Zion and with world-loving hypocrites. They had
watched over the true disciples of Jesus; but the corrupt were affecting the holy.
Those whose hearts burned with an intense desire to see Jesus were forbidden by
their professed brethren to speak of His coming. Angels viewed the scene and
sympathized with the remnant who loved the appearing of their Lord. {EW 246.3}
Another mighty angel was commissioned to descend to earth. Jesus placed in
his hand a writing, and as he came to the earth, he cried, "Babylon is fallen, is
fallen." Then I saw the disappointed ones again raise their eyes to heaven, looking
with faith and hope for their Lord's appearing. But many seemed to remain in a
stupid state, as if asleep; yet I could see the trace of deep sorrow upon their
countenances. The disappointed ones saw from the Scriptures that they were in
the tarrying time, and that they must patiently wait the fulfillment of the vision.
The same evidence which led them to look for their Lord in 1843, led them to
expect Him in 1844. Yet I saw that the majority did not possess that energy which
marked their faith in 1843. Their disappointment had dampened their faith. {EW
247.1}
As the people of God united in the cry of the second angel, the heavenly host
marked with the deepest interest the effect of the message. They saw many who
bore the name of Christians turn with scorn and derision upon those who had
been disappointed. As the words fell from mocking lips, "You have not gone up yet!"
an angel wrote them. Said the angel, "They mock God." I was pointed back to a
similar sin committed in ancient times. Elijah had been translated to heaven, and
his mantle had fallen upon Elisha. Then wicked youth, who had learned from their
parents to despise the man of God, followed Elisha, and mockingly cried, "Go up,
thou bald head; go up, thou bald head." In thus insulting His servant, they
insulted God and met their punishment then and there. In like manner, those who
have scoffed and mocked at the idea of the saints' going up, will be visited with the
wrath of God, and will be made to feel that it is not a light thing to trifle with their
Maker. {EW 247.2}

 Jesus commissioned other angels to fly quickly to revive and strengthen the
drooping faith of His people and prepare them to understand the message of the
second angel and the important move which was soon to be made in heaven. I saw
these angels receive great power and light from Jesus and fly quickly to earth to
fulfill their commission to aid the second angel in his work. A great light shone
upon the people of God as the angels cried, "Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye
out to meet Him." Then I saw these disappointed ones rise and in harmony with
the second angel proclaim, "Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet
Him." The light from the angels penetrated the darkness everywhere. Satan and his
angels sought to hinder this light from spreading and having its designed effect.
They contended with the angels from heaven, telling them that God had deceived
the people, and that with all their light and power they could not make the world
believe that Christ was coming. But notwithstanding Satan strove to hedge up the
way and draw the minds of the people from the light, the angels of God continued
their work. {EW 248.1}
Those who received the light appeared very happy. They looked steadfastly
toward heaven and longed for the appearing of Jesus. Some were weeping and
praying in great distress. Their eyes seemed to be fixed upon themselves, and they
dared not look upward. A light from heaven parted the darkness from them, and
their eyes, which had been fixed in despair upon themselves, were turned upward,
while gratitude and holy joy were expressed upon every feature. Jesus and all the
angelic host looked with approbation upon the faithful, waiting ones. {EW 248.2}
Those who rejected and opposed the light of the first angel's message, lost the
light of the second, and could not be benefited by the power and glory which
attended the message, "Behold, the Bridegroom cometh." Jesus turned from them
with a frown; for they had slighted and rejected Him. Those who received the
message were wrapped in a cloud of glory. They greatly feared to offend God, and
waited and watched and prayed to know His will. I saw Satan and his angels
seeking to shut this divine light from the people of God; but as long as the waiting
ones cherished the light and kept their eyes raised from earth to Jesus, Satan
could have no power to deprive them of its precious rays. The message given from
heaven enraged Satan and his angels, and led those who professed to love Jesus,
but despised His coming, to scorn and deride the faithful, trusting ones. But an
angel marked every insult, every slight, every wrong, which the children of God
received from their professed brethren. {EW 249.1}
Very many raised their voices to cry, "Behold, the Bridegroom cometh!" and left
their brethren who did not love the appearing of Jesus, and who would not suffer
them to dwell upon His second coming. I saw Jesus turn His face from those who
rejected and despised His coming, and then He bade angels lead His people out
from among the unclean, lest they should be defiled. Those who were obedient to
the message stood out free and united. A holy light shone upon them. They

renounced the world, sacrificed their earthly interests, gave up their earthly
treasures, and directed their anxious gaze to heaven, expecting to see their loved
Deliverer. A holy light beamed upon their countenances, telling of the peace and
joy which reigned within. Jesus bade His angels go and strengthen them, for the
hour of their trial drew on. I saw that these waiting ones were not yet tried as they
must be. They were not free from errors. And I saw the mercy and goodness of God
in sending a warning to the people of the earth, and repeated messages to lead
them to a diligent searching of heart, and study of the Scriptures, that they might
divest themselves of errors which have been handed down from the heathen and
papists. Through these messages God has been bringing out His people where He
can work for them in greater power, and where they can keep all His
commandments. {EW 249.2}

THE SEVEN THUNDERS AND PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS IN OUR HISTOR

REV 10:1And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a
rainbow [was] upon his head, and his face [was] as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire: 2And
he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and [his] left [foot]
on the earth, 3And cried with a loud voice, as [when] a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven
thunders uttered their voices. 4And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to
write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders
uttered, and write them not.
WHAT ARE THE SEVEN THUNDERS
After these seven thunders uttered their voices, the injunction comes to John as to Daniel in regard to
the little book: "Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered." These relate to future
events which will be disclosed in their order. Daniel shall stand in his lot at the end of the days.
John sees the little book unsealed. Then Daniel's prophecies have their proper place in the first,
second, and third angels' messages to be given to the world. The unsealing of the little book was the
message in relation to time. {7BC 971.4}
WILL GOD’S PEOPLE HAVE A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THESE EVENTS?
If Christ is not abiding in the soul, another spirit rules and controls; but Christ, the precious Saviour,
is to be the Christian's all in all. Every holy thought, every pure desire, every godlike purpose is from
him who is the light, the truth, and the way. Christ is to live in his representatives by the spirit of
truth. Jesus said, "Howbeit, when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for
he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you
things to come." The events of the future will be discerned by prophecy, and will be understood.

“Before His crucifixion the Saviour explained to His disciples that He was to be put to death and to
rise again from the tomb, and angels were present to impress His words on minds and hearts. But the
disciples were looking for temporal deliverance from the Roman yoke, and they could not tolerate the

thought that He in whom all their hopes centered should suffer an ignominious death. The words
which they needed to remember were banished from their minds; and when the time of trial came, it
found them unprepared. The death of Jesus as fully destroyed their hopes as if He had not forewarned
them. So in the prophecies the future is opened before us as plainly as it was opened to the disciples
by the words of Christ. The events connected with the close of probation and the work of
preparation for the time of trouble, are clearly presented. But multitudes have no more
understanding of these important truths than if they had never been revealed. Satan watches to
catch away every impression that would make them wise unto salvation, and the time of trouble will
find them unready. {GC 594.1}

WHY:
REASON ONE: God’s dealing With Men Is Ever The Same.
Hebrew 13:8. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
Malachi 3:6. For I [am] the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
The work of God in the earth presents, from age to age, a striking similarity in every great
reformation or religious movement. The principles of God's dealing with men are ever the same.
The important movements of the present have their parallel in those of the past, and the experience of
the church in former ages has lessons of great value for our own time. {GC88 343.1}
REASON TWO: History Repeats Itself
ECC 1:9. The thing that hath been, it [is that] which shall be; and that which is done [is] that which
shall be done: and [there is] no new [thing] under the sun.
Ecc 3:15. That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth
that which is past.
The Old and New Testaments are linked together by the golden clasp of God. We need to become
familiar with the Old-Testament Scriptures. The unchangeableness of God should be clearly seen; the
similarity of his dealings with his people of the past dispensation and of the present, should be
studied. Under the inspiration of the Spirit of God, Solomon wrote, "That which hath been is now:
and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past." In mercy God
repeats his past dealings. He has given us a record of his dealings in the past. This we need to
study carefully; for history is repeating itself. We are more accountable than were those whose
experience is recorded in the Old Testament; for their mistakes, and the results of those mistakes,
have been chronicled for our benefit. {RH, April 20, 1897 par. 14}

the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath

of the new wine, for it is cut off from your mouth.6For a nation is come up upon my land, strong,

THE FOUR STEPS OF SCATTERING MILLER’S JEWELS

The people began to come in, at first few in number, but increasing to a crowd. When they first
looked into the casket, they would wonder and shout for joy. But when the spectators increased,
everyone would begin to trouble the jewels, taking them out of the casket and scattering them on the
table. {EW 82.1}
I began to think that the owner would require the casket and the jewels again at my hand; and if I
suffered them to be scattered, I could never place them in their places in the casket again as before;
and felt I should never be able to meet the accountability, for it would be immense. I then began to
plead with the people not to handle them, nor to take them out of the casket; but the more I pleaded,
the more they scattered; and now they seemed to scatter them all over the room, on the floor and on
every piece of furniture in the room. {EW 82.2}
I then saw that among the genuine jewels and coin they had scattered an innumerable quantity of
spurious jewels and counterfeit coin. I was highly incensed at their base conduct and ingratitude, and
reproved and reproached them for it; but the more I reproved, the more they scattered the spurious
jewels and false coin among the genuine. {EW 82.3}
I then became vexed in my physical soul and began to use physical force to push them out of the
room; but while I was pushing out one, three more would enter and bring in dirt and shavings and

sand and all manner of rubbish, until they covered every one of the true jewels, diamonds, and coins,
which were all excluded from sight. They also tore in pieces my casket and scattered it among the
rubbish. I thought no man regarded my sorrow or my anger. I became wholly discouraged and
disheartened, and sat down and wept. {EW 82.4}
1989 TIME OF THE END PROPHECY FULFILLED- PAPACY CAME AGAINST RUSSIA

JOEL 2:25-26. 25And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and
the caterpillar, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you. 26And ye shall eat in
plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt wondrously with
you: and my people shall never be ashamed.
FORMALIZATION OF THE MESSAGE BY JEFF PIPINGER

The message of the last six verses of Daniel 11 was formalized in the form of a magazine called
the “Time of the End.” It was first published as a magazine in 1996.
This magazine gives a verse by verse explanation of Daniel 11:40-45 with proof-texts, Spirit of
prophecy statements and historical sources as backing evidence.

“The Jews tried to stop the proclamation of the message that had been predicted in the word of God;
but *prophecy must be fulfilled*. The Lord says, “Behold, I send you Elijah the prophet, before the
coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.” *Somebody is to come in the spirit and power
of Elijah*, and when he appears, men may say, *“You are too earnest; you do not interpret the
Scriptures in the proper way. Let me tell you how to teach your message*.”” – {Review and

“How comes the word that I have declared that New York is to be swept away by a tidal wave? This I
have never said. I have said, as I looked at the *great buildings going up there, story after story*,
‘What terrible scenes will take place when the Lord shall arise to shake terribly the earth! *Then the
words of Revelation 18:1-3 will be fulfilled*.’ The whole of the eighteenth chapter of Revelation is
a warning of what is coming on the earth. But I have no light in particular in regard to what is coming
on New York, only that I know that one day the great buildings there will be *thrown down by the
turning and overturning of God’s power*. From the light given me, I know that destruction is in
the world. One word from the Lord, one touch of his mighty power, and these massive structures will
fall. Scenes will take place the fearfulness of which we can not imagine.” – {Review and Herald, July

God has given the messages of Revelation 14 their place in the line of prophecy, and their work
is not to cease till the close of this earth’s history. The first and second angel’s messages are still
truth for this time, and are to run parallel with this which follows. The third angel proclaims his
warning with a loud voice. “After these things,” said John, “I saw another angel come down from
heaven, having great power, and the earth was lightened with his glory.” In this illumination, the

expected this.’ Others were wringing their hands in agony and crying unto God for mercy. ‘You
knew it,’ said they, ‘you knew that this was coming, and never said a word to warn us!’ They
seemed as though they would almost tear them to pieces, to think they had never told them or
given them any warning at all.

“But when *Sunday observance shall be enforced by law*, and the world shall be enlightened
concerning the obligation of the true Sabbath, then whoever shall transgress the command of God, to
obey a precept which has no higher authority than that of Rome, will thereby *honor popery above
God*. He is paying homage to Rome and to the power which enforces the institution ordained by
Rome. *He is worshiping the beast and his image*. As men then reject the institution which God
has declared to be the sign of His authority, and honor in its stead that which Rome has chosen as the
token of her supremacy, *they will thereby accept the sign of allegiance to Rome—“the mark of
the beast*.” And it is not until the issue is thus plainly set before the people, and they are brought to
choose between the commandments of God and the commandments of men, *that those who

“When the leading churches of the United States, uniting upon such points of doctrine as are held by
them in common, *shall influence the state to enforce their decrees and to sustain their
institutions*, then Protestant America will have formed *an image of the Roman hierarchy*, and
the infliction of civil penalties upon dissenters will inevitably result…The “image to the beast”
represents that form of apostate Protestantism which will be developed when the Protestant
churches shall seek the aid of the civil power for the enforcement of their dogmas*. The “mark

“In order for the United States to form an image of the beast, *the religious power must so control
the civil government that the authority of the state will also be employed by the church to

*Protestants will work upon the rulers of the land* to make laws to restore the lost ascendancy of
the man of sin, who sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. *Roman Catholic
principles will be taken under the care and protection of the state*. This national apostasy will
