GEP 3150 Assignment 1 - Compare & Contrast
GEP 3150 Assignment 1 - Compare & Contrast
Assignment 1. Analytical comparing and contrasting exercise of two images from the Photography
Centre, V&A
Assignment Weighting 40%
How do we read Images? In what ways do we make sense of the images we see? How do we use
what we see to re-interpret our cultural environment – Adverts, fashion, buildings, monuments,
billboards, digital media, vehicles, and works of art? How can our own interpretation contribute to
wider cultural activity that continuously rethinks our environment and re-shapes it? We must begin
by looking, and by looking more effectively.
For this assignment you are asked to select two images from the Victoria and Albert Museum’s
Photography Centre and write a Visual Analysis. Your submission should be 1000 words +/- 10 %.
Purpose: The assignment serves three core purposes:
To expand your knowledge on the history, theory and practice of creativity in the arts.
To develop your competence as a commentator on the creative arts.
To research and build an in-depth understanding of other artists’ images to inform your own
responsive set of 10 Images (in Assignment 2).
Procedure: You will visit the Photography Centre, V&A with your instructor. From this collection,
you will select two interrelated images that have been produced in the last 50 years (1974 - 2024).
You will research your chosen images and their makers in depth, drawing on a range of published
and web-based sources. Through your observations you will give an account of how the curators
have incorporated your chosen images within the display: are they thematically ordered? Do they
follow a geographical placement in addition to a historical one? How do they fit in the section they
have been placed? These reflections will help you think about how you will be placing the images
you produce for your second assignment.
Through your research you will initially look at and describe the works. Then, through their museum
labels you will identify the works, establishing who made them, when and where. You will next
analyze the works, comparing and contrasting them to each other. In your analysis, you should use
visual analysis and semiotics theory to consider any cultural references in your chosen images.
Following this, you will interpret your two works. This is the stage at which you take time to reflect
on why your photos may differ from other similar works and comment on the factors that may have
contributed to them being different, - such as new technologies, economic constraints, the authors’
intentions and the politics of the time. Finally, you will evaluate your works by looking into what
people have said about the contribution these works have made to the discipline to which they
belong, as well as why they are important to society more widely. In your account you will explore
these people’s ideas and combine their insights with your own. Be sure to make clear which ideas
are yours and which ideas come instead from the people whose writings you have read.
Sources: You are required to find your own sources for this assignment. The essay must contain five
references of which at least three from academic sources (chapters in books, essays, articles,
reviews). To score well you will need to ensure that your sources are authoritative and that you cite
them using the citation method required by your instructor (Harvard style).
Submission: See the course schedule for the submission dates.
