This study determines the difference between the two major operating

system brands which is the IOS and Android. The respondents of the study is

composed of 200 random students of Cainta Catholic College. The primary

purpose of the study is to differentiate which operating system is much useful

especially for academic purposes.

This research is non-experimental study therefore it will utilize a research

instrument specifically survey questionnaires in order to answer the research

questions. This study would aim to answer 1.) What is the profile of the

respondents in terms of sex, monthly family income, smart phone owned, and

duration of ownership..2.) What factors contribute to the smartphone currently

owned in terms of Functionality, Convenience, and Societal Influence; and is

there a significant difference between the profile and the factors that contributes

to smart phone that is used. Given the problems the researchers came up with a
null hypothesis that there is no actual difference between IOS and Android

operating system brands.

After interpreting and analyzing the results on the survey questionnaire the

researchers used frequency and percentage and tables to record the data

gathered and the weighted mean in terms of the significant difference between

the operating brands.

The result of the research shows that majority of the students that take part

of the study is male. The researchers were able to know that they mostly have

below P15, 000 – P19,999 monthly family income and the commonly use Android

as an operating system, greater number of students owned their cell phones for

over a year. The strand that participate the most is the Humanities and Social

Science strand.

The Social Influences is the most important factor that students considered

in choosing an operating system. This encompasses other people's perception,

culture, recommendations, social media apps and social trends.

Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter includes the introduction and background of the study. It will

also discuss the scope and limitations, statement of the problem, hypothesis, and

present the theoretical framework, conceptual framework, and definition of terms.

Introduction

Google’s Android and Apple's Iphone are the two operating systems that is

used primarily nowadays specifically in the country both have its differences and

similarities that every mobile users look out in choosing which operating system is

best (Hill, 2019). Researching this topic could be helpful not only to the

researchers but also to everyone who are using these operating systems for

through this research findings on what operating system is best to use will be

revealed and to test the hypothesis in which leads to answer if there is really a

difference between two operating systems.

Many people used their phones all the time, that’s why the government

formulated a law that will tackle about their safety. As stated by the Congress of

the Philippines, there is a legal basis for localization to this issue is under

RA10173 “An Act Protecting Individual Personal Information in Information and

Communication System in the Government and the Private Sector, Creating for

this Purpose a National Privacy Commission, and for other Purpose”, people

whose personal information is collected, stored, and processed are called data

subjects. Organizations who deal with one’s personal details, whereabouts and

preferences are duty bound to observe and respect one’s data privacy rights.

There are cases where companies that sell smart phones are obtaining their

user’s data to sell to advertisers. Knowing this can change the preference in

choosing the right operating system.

The operating system of apple and android both stores and collect

information from its users but does not share data to other companies (Graham,

2018 and Hildenbrand, 2018). The objectives of this study are to differentiate,

determine, distinguish and examine. The researcher’s aims to find the best

operating system for Senior High School Student that can be beneficial to their

academic performance.

Background of the Study

This study will discuss the relationship between Android and Apple

operating systems based on how well the students of CCC are literate when it

comes to their operating system to specifically know what are to comparisons

between apple and android iOS and to know which operating system is best to

use that help students with their studies.

According to Rouse (2017) AppleiOS is the operating system that runs on

the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch they are The 2nd most popular mobile OS

behind Google Android with a market share of 12.5% worldwide as of November

2016 according to IDC. First launched on June 29, 2007, and came up with their

very first iPhone created by the late Steve Jobs and His former team at apple.

iPhone OS 1 was a major hit because it was more user-friendly and less

complicated to use with a basic “Springboard” design which displays apps in a

grid form it responds to user gestures such as pinching, tapping and swiping. The

idea of creating the iPhone 1 is that the iPod, camera, phone, and the internet can

be packed in a single device which makes it portable and more convenient. Every

year Apple continues to innovate its software with updates like “Siri” which serves

as your assistant that responds to your voice, Maps that gives directions. Apple’s

security prohibits the installation of apps coming from the internet because the

device only allows Apple licensed products to avoid security breaches and viruses

that can steal information.

As stated by Khamlichi (2015) Android Inc was founded by Rick Miner,

Nick Sears, Chris White, and Andy Rubin in October 2003 in Palo Alto, California.
Android is a more open system compared to iOS, It allows the installation of

foreign software from the internet but there is a risk with it because not all

software from the internet is licensed and secured making the device vulnerable

to viruses. It also offers Google’s services such as Gmail, Google Reader,

Hangouts, and Google Docs for personal use.

Scope and Limitations

In this study, there are factors that would be considered in order to attain the

intended outcome. The study will only focus on the perception of Cainta Catholic

College senior high school students on the comparison of IOS and Android operating

system. The data that would be driven out would be convenient in terms of finding out

what operating system is best especially to the students in the school. Specifically, it

would be beneficial for the students and the researchers. The study would take place

within the school vicinity only.

As it is time-bound, the study would be conducted within the present

academic year and students would come from grade 11, and to eliminate

subjectivity the study involves random sampling.

The following limitations are mandatory process to further develop the

study. The operating system is limited by its latest version of IOS and Android

(2019) operating system as a part of the study to a majority of similarities among

students using IOS and Android operating systems, thus other non-latest version

are not included in order to prevent misconceptions.

Statement of the Problem

This study entitled “The Difference Between The Operating System of

Android and Iphone of Senior High School Students at Cainta Catholic College.”

Pursues to solve the problem of grade eleven senior high school students in

terms of the disparity in choosing which operating system brand is best and

helpful to use in regards with one’s studies.Specifically, it aims to answer the

following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Sex

1.2 Monthly family income

1.3 Smart phone owned

1.4 Duration of ownership

2. What factors contribute to the smart phone currently owned?

2.1 Functionality

2.2 Convenience

2.3 Societal Influence

3. Is there a significant difference between the profile and the factors that

contributes to smart phone that is used

Hypothesis

The hypothesis suggests that the study would be significant to senior high

school students to perceive that both IOS and Android are beneficial to their

studies. Particularly, the researchers believe that:

There is no actual difference between IOS and Android operating system

brands.

Theoretical Framework

According to Bill Siwicki (2014) Apple users prefer Ipads and Iphone more than

Android gadgets since they do not want to waste their time in customizing and

exploring their phones for a better service and functionality even if it costs them

more, for unlike the IOS that has a uniformed apps, widgets, and controls Android

can be manipulated in terms of these things unlike IOS. One’s preference in

choosing an operating system also varies in terms of prices for IOS is much more

expensive than any other operating system unlike its main competitor which is

Android brand.

Chapter 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter discusses all the different related literature and studies that is

significant to the study. The collection of studies below serves as basis of

statements for the claims of the researchers.

Operating System

In choosing the good phone you need to consider its screen, operating

system, camera, etc. But people nowadays are always looking for operating

system, Operating system is software that enables a mobile phones, smart

phones, etc. to work, this will establish how the phone will function and what

features it can possibly have like email and keyboard (Beal, 2018).

The operating system is considered to be the backbone of the application

and programs of the phone because it is above of everything. Though it is not as

visible as other components os the phone yet it is one of the most important

because it make the cellphone runs (Hendricks, n.d.). People do consider

operating system before purchasing phones to assure that it will fit the

preferences of the users. There are two operating systems in smart phone. The

android and Ios, some of the people are choosing android because it is easier to

operate than the Ios.

One can use Google services and apps like, Google maps, Gmail, and

Google docs. And it has released a new feature similar to ios, the Google

assistant (Chen,2019). While on the other hand the Ios is more complex than the

android, it has app store. It is more secured than android phones, you can

download something from your browser in your android phone but in Ios you can’t

because it has security features that prevent viruses from entering your phone.

Most Common Operating System

Moreover, the literature relevant to smartphone forensics focuses on the

architecture of smart phone operating systems, anti-forensic methods, and

smartphone applications. Mobile application development usually falls into two

classifications: device-neutral and supplied via a smartphone browser, and

indigenous apps created for a particular mobile platform like Ios or Android, which

is the most common and popular operating systems nowadays (Costello, 2019).

Thus for going in either direction, a fairly defensible technical argument can

be created, which is why an extra point of perspective is required. The intention

here is not to speak as better than the other either. Everyone has their own

merits. Rather, the intention is to define regions where the required functionality

could be better enabled.

Android Operating System

Particularly, Android operating system was first created by Android, Inc., a

Silicon Valley software company, before it was purchased by Google in 2005.

Since that takeover, investors and analysts in the electronics industry have

challenged Google's real intent to enter the mobile business room. Later on,

Google release the fist android phone in the year of 2007 and the product hits the

marketplace in 2008.

Android is an operating system that is developed by Google, It is created to

build and support a touch screen, cell phones and tablets. The model lets the

users to operate mobile devices with the use of fingers movements such as,

tapping, swiping, and pinching. Since then, software and application designers

have been able to use Android technology to create mobile apps that are

marketed through app stores such as Google Play. And since it is created as a

Google product, Android consumers have the chance to connect their mobile

phone to other Google resources, such as cloud storage, email platforms, and

video services.

Android provides consumers with a feasible option to other mobile

operating systems, there are still several constraints. On the developer hand,
designing complicated customer experiences and interfaces is an often

challenging job that requires more dependence on Java than Objective-C. The

Android Market applications tend to have reduced expectations for customers

than similar app stores (Chen, 2019).

Iphone Operating System

Not only android is the most commonly used operating system nowadays

but also Ios, According Steve Jobs Apple's portable working system Ios operates

touch phones for iPhone, iPad, and iPod. The name was changed with the

introduction of the iPad, originally known as the iPhone OS, It utilizes a multi-

touch interface that operates the machine with easy movements, such as pushing

your finger across the display to advance to the next section or pinching your

thumbs to zoom out (Nations, 2019).

There's over 2 million Ios, mobile working schemes such as Ios are

different from most other operating systems because they bring each device in

their own safety shell, which prevents other applications from manipulating them.

This design makes contaminating apps on a mobile operating system impossible

for a virus, although there are other forms of malware. There are also barriers to

the protective shell around applications because it prevents applications from

interacting instantly with each other.

Operating System in the Philippines

Furthermore, Android operating system is much more used on our country,

the Philippines, because of its lower and affordable prices compared to other

operating system especially to its number one competitor the Ios, in fact

according to a survey research made by GfK out of one hundred percent buyers,

ninety one percent purchases Android instead because some Filipinos are very

much practical in buying things and most likely supports their own local gadget

companies in which results to a conclusion that Filipinos embraces still and

supports IOS more than Android (Pinaroc, 2013). It is mainly because of the

monthly family income that they have coming from their wedges and pensions,

this will establish what kind of living will a family has and what things they could

buy, it will also reflect on what type of phones they could afford with that money

(Shuani,n.d)

Nonetheless, many Filipinos supports IOS too because of its trendy

features and specifications (Lowe, 2013). One of the reasons why Filipinos

choose IOS operating system is because of its high quality camera feature. Apart

from this nowadays people are very much aware that we have a large variety of

operating systems and brands of gadgets to choose from and suit and satisfy

one’s own preference and taste according this matter Android (Pinaroc, 2013). As

stated by Newman (2018) sex can be a factor that can affect the preference of a

person because male and female were looking different features that they
wanted, mostly males wanted a phone that can use in gaming while girls wanted

a HD camera.

How regularly do people upgrade their smartphones?

Device atlas release a graph about people that are changing their cellphones

yearly. on 2015 iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, the Motorola Moto G, Samsung Galaxy

S6, Xiaomi Redmi 2 are the most popular cellphones at that time and users are

buying a new phone to upgrade. And as time passes by the number of users that

are buying a new phone are increasing. And some of them are not upgrading

because it cost too much and their cellphones are currently good.
CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter exhibits the research design the researchers will use through

the whole study. It will also disclose the setting of the study, subject of the study,

sources of data, sampling procedure, data gathering procedure, and the statistical

treatment of data.

Research Design

Research design is characterized as a system of methods and techniques

chosen by a researcher to combine different research components in a fairly

logical manner to effectively manage the research question.

Descriptive research is defined as a method of research describing the

characteristics of the population or phenomenon being studied. This methodology

focuses on the research topic's "what" rather than the research topic's "why”

(Bhat, A. (n.d.).

Furthermore, the research design will be non-experimental design. As

stated by Patidar, J (2013). The variables cannot be manipulated or control that’s

why the researchers will only base on the observations and interpretation of the

data according to the surveys. Manipulation of these may affect the subjects in

harmful way. There are also no scientific experiments required in order to get the

result of the research. This research will require large sample size that can be

randomly selected.

Nonetheless, the researcher method will be surveys, the researchers aims

to collect data from a large number of correspondents and using this type of

method will make it more convenient and quick (Cruz, 2016). The researchers will

be giving out written survey questionnaire that are related to the study in order to

know their idea about the study. It will be given to the randomly selected

respondents/ participants. Later on, their answers will interrelate. Where in n =

no. of samples, N = total population, e = error margin / margin of error

(Research Assignments, n.d.).

Slovin’s Formula Figure 3.

Setting of the Study

The research will took place at Cainta Catholic College, located at A.

Bonifacio Ave, Poblacion, Cainta, Rizal. The research will also be a survey

research and this type of research is conducted and formulated with the use of

survey questionnaires and giving them out to respondents (Rouse, 2017).

The respondents would consist of senior high school students from grade

eleven. The randomly selected two sections per strands would be the one to

participate in the study. Only two sections would participate so that it would not be

time consuming for the researchers given the limited time, through this the

researchers would be able to acquire all the information they need to test

hypothesis which is to know if there is really a difference between Ios and Android

operating system.
Satellite Image Map of Cainta Catholic CollegeFigure 4.

Subject of the Study

The study would only include one section per strand (ABM, STEM,

HUMMS, HELE, ICT, and GAS) consisting of two hundred random

respondents from Grade eleven senior high school that uses either iOS

or Android as their operating system. They will answer the questionnaires

presented by the researchers and will be monitored by doing so. The

numbers of iOS users per strand will be compared to the number of Android

users through a graphical presentation below, and it is a visual

representation of data that consists of numbers (Matthew, 2015).

Source of Data

The Researchers will be using primary data in this study. It provides

firsthand information that can be gathered through experiments, statistical data,

interviews, etc (Sindhu, 2011). This is the original data where other studies can

be based on. In this way, the researchers will be able to get relevant answers that

will be precise and reliable.

The data will be collected through the response of the students on the

questionnaires. This will provide direct answers that will be beneficial to the study.

The researchers will also use secondary data from the internet like articles and

books.

Sampling Procedure

There are two types of sampling procedures. The probability sampling and

non- probability sampling. This study will use simple random sampling and it is

defined that one is a subpart of a population and choosing the respondents is

completely unbiased (Hayes, 2019). It is also under probability sampling in which

respondents from large population is selected based on a method and is

randomly selected (Bhat, 2019). Which in the study’s case will be the done

through wheel decide application which is a customize roulette.

The researchers chose this sampling procedure because the study can be

answered by asking questions from different students, moreover every section

per strands will have an equal chance to be selected. This procedure is not bias

because one is not selecting purposively but randomly.

These participants will be selected deliberately using the following criteria:

1. A senior highschool student using android/ iphone

2. A student from cainta catholic college

Data Gathering Procedure

The first step before going to the proper test is to submit a letter of request.

The researchers will obtain the letter of the request upon approval. The Principal

was chosen in the administration as well as the class adviser and other faculty

members. The researchers used the time allotted to the vacant time in conducting

the questionnaire to avoid distractions from class discussions, the students are

given sufficient time to fill up the questionnaire. The researcher will afterwards

use the data collected to calculate the scores and apply the proper numerical

analysis to be used in the study.

Statistical Treatment

To interpret the gathered data, the researchers used the following.

The correlation coefficient of Pearson is the research statistics that

calculate the statistical association between two continuous variables.

CHAPTER 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the complete analysis and interpretation of results

from the data gathered. Data was presented in tables and is further justified by

the related literature.

Table 1

Frequency and Percentage Distribution of the Respondents

TOTAL 200 100

The Table 1 reveals the frequency and percentage distribution on the

profile of the respondents in terms of sex, it has two indicators which are male

and female. It gathered an average of 100%

It shows that 57.5 of the respondents are male, which made it rank 1. On

the other hand, 41.5 were female. The researchers used random sampling in

selecting the respondents in the study. The total number of male students that

participated are 115 while the females are 83.

As stated by Newman (2018) sex is defined as the different biological

aspects of a human being in terms of the genitalia and genetic factors, which

means that it will only be classified as either male or female, it is assigned at birth.

On the other side sex differs from gender because gender is more on the social

role, it is not assigned at birth and it is developed by the society

(Celemente,2018). “Gender refers to the socially constructed characteristics of

women and men, such as norms and roles.

TOTAL 200 100

The Table 2 shows the frequency and percentage distribution on the

profile of the respondents in terms of monthly family income respondents.

Mostly of the students have P15, 000-19,999 with a proportion of 31.5%

from the overall population. Next is 28% of below P15, 000 range, 18% of P20,

000-24,999 range, 15.5% of above P30, 000. Lastly, encompassing 7% the

respondents that have P25,000- 29,999 family income.

As mentioned by Shuani (N.A), monthly family income refers to the total

money received by a family that comes from their wedge, pensions, etc. They
used it to buy their necessities in order to survive, quote mention in the same

article saying that “We cannot eat money, but we cannot eat without money.”

meaning it really affects the way home families live their lives and the things that

can afford.

The Table 3 presented the frequency and percentage distribution on the

profile of the respondents in terms of smart phone owned by the respondents. It

has two indicators the android and apple operating system.

Majority of the students used cellphones with an android operating system

having 58.5% while cell phones with apple operating system landed on the

bottom or the ranking with only 37%.

According to the related literature, operating system is the software that

allows smart phones to function. This will determine how the phone will work as a

whole and what features it can give have like the quality of camera, messaging,

and email (Beal, 2018). It is considered to be the frame that supports the

application and programs that is present in the phone because it is the most

important, it enables the phone to run (Hendricks, n.d.). People do consider

operating system before purchasing phones to assure that it will fit the

preferences of the users.

the F for question number 1. In order to get the p all you need to do is to divide

the F to the total number of the respondents. This method is used in the other

questions. They ranked based on how many answered a question.

The rank 1 is over a year because the total number of answer on this

question is 81 while the rank 4 is less than a month. So that most of the students

in Cainta Catholic College are using their phone over a year.

In accordance to Jkeilty (july 2019) some of the users are not upgrading

their phone into a new one because they are already satisfy in the performance of

their current phone.

used on our country, the Philippines, because of its lower and affordable

prices because many Filipinos are in average way of living and it's not their

priority to buy expensive smart phones. Compared to other operating system

especially to its number one competitor the Ios. Many Filipinos supports IOS
too because of its trendy features and specifications because here in the

Philippines, when they have Iphone or IOS people think that they are in luxury

according to a survey research made by GfK out of one hundred percent buyers,

ninety one percent purchases Android instead because some Filipinos are very

much practical in buying things and most likely supports their own local gadget

companies in which results to a conclusion that Filipinos embraces still and

supports Ios more than Android (Pinaroc, 2013).

Nonetheless, many Filipinos supportsIos too because of its trendy features

and specifications (Lowe, 2013). One of the reasons why Filipinos choose Ios

operating system is because of its high quality camera feature. Apart from this
nowadays people are very much aware that we have a large variety of operating

systems and brands of gadgets to choose from and suit and satisfy one’s own

preference and taste according this matter Android (Pinaroc, 2013).

Referring from the results shown in the table, the null hypothesis was

accepted hence, there is no significant difference found between the two

variables. It indicates that since there is no difference, the two variables are

directly proportional to each other.

As stated by Pinaroc (2013) the main reason why a person sticks with the

cell phone they already owned and they refuse to change because the operating

In selecting a phone students consider its specifications like screen,

operating system, camera, etc. Operating system is software that enables a

mobile phones, smart phones, etc. to work; this will establish how the phone will
function and what features it can possibly have like email and keyboard (Beal,

2018). Students coming from different strands can use their phones for academic

purposes depending on their needs, that's why good operating system is

beneficial.
