Midterm 8

This document is a midterm exam for a Calculus II class, consisting of fill-in-the-blank and question sections. The fill-in-the-blank section tests concepts related to series, derivatives, integrals, and geometry. The question section includes problems involving Bessel functions, proving e is irrational, electric dipoles, parametric curves, vectors, and Frenet-Serret formulas.

Questions (65%)

1. (10 points) The Bessel function of order 0 and 1 are defined by

(−1)n x2n
J0 (x) =
n=0
22n (n!)2
∑∞
(−1)n x2n+1
J1 (x) =
n=0
n!(n + 1)! 22n+1

(i) Show that J1 satisfies the differential equation

x2 J1′′ (x) + xJ1′ (x) + (x2 − 1)J1 (x) = 0

(ii) Show that J0′ (x) = −J1 (x).

2. (10 points) Use the following outline to prove that e is an irrational number(無理數):
If e were rational(有理數), then it would be of the form e = p/q, where p and q are positive
integers and q > 2. Use Taylor’s Formula to write
p 1 1 1 ez
= e = 1 + + + ··· + +
q 1! 2! q! (q + 1)!
ez
= sq +
(q + 1)!

where 0 ≤ z ≤ 1.

(a) Show that q!(e − sq ) is an integer.

(b) Show that q!(e − sq ) < 1.

Use part (a) and (b) to deduce that e is irrational.

3. (10 points) An electric dipole(電偶極) consists of two electric charges(電荷) of equal magnitude
and opposite sign. If the charges are q and −q and are located at a distance d from each other,
then the electric field E(電場) at the point P in the figure is
q q
E= 2

D (D + d)2

By expanding this expression for E as a series in powers of d/D, show that E is approximately
proportional to 1/D3 when P is far away from the dipole.

4. (10 points) In the figure the circle of radius a is stationary, and for every θ, the point P is the
midpoint of the segment QR. The curve traced out by P for 0 < θ < π is called the longbow
curve(長弓線). Find parametric equations for this curve.

5. (15 points) Find the vectors T, N and B at the given point.

r(t) =< cos t, sin t, ln cos t >, (1, 0, 0)

6. (10 points) The following formulas, called the Frenet-Serret formulas, are of fundamental
importance in differential geometry:

(a) dT/ds = κN
(b) dN/ds = −κT + τ B
(c) dB/ds = −τ N

Use the fact that N = B × T to deduce Formula (b) from Formulas (a) and (c).
