Impact of Politics on the Workplace

Workplace politics can have a big impact on both individuals and the company as a whole. It's commonly
understood to be the complex and occasionally clandestine scheming for benefit within an organizational
context. These impacts, which include staff turnover, stress levels, creativity, competition, and productivity,
can be both beneficial and detrimental. Gaining an understanding of these dynamics is essential to
promoting a positive workplace culture and maximizing organizational performance.

Benefits
1. Originality
When handled skillfully, workplace politics can promote greater creativity. Workers may act politically in
order to forward their causes and beliefs. As a result of this campaigning, fresh and original approaches to
business issues may be introduced. For example, when workers are driven to surpass their peers, they could
work more to create novel goods or procedures that are advantageous to the company as a whole.

2. Rivalry
Politics in the workplace can encourage healthy competition, which can motivate workers to give their best
effort. Employees are more likely to exert extra effort when they are aware that their efforts are being
closely monitored and that excellence is rewarded. As people try to surpass expectations and get recognition,
a competitive spirit can result in increased productivity and better quality work.

3. Development of Leadership
Managing politics at work can aid in the development of crucial interpersonal and leadership abilities in
employees. Staff members can position themselves for greater leadership positions by developing their
ability to influence people, form alliances, and resolve disagreements. The corporation may benefit from this
skill development since it produces a group of future leaders capable of managing difficult interpersonal
situations and advancing the business.

Adverse Repercussions
1. Anxiety and Stress
An important side consequence of workplace politics is that it makes employees more stressed and anxious.
A stressful work environment might result from the necessity for constant movement and vigilance.
Employees may experience psychological weariness and a decline in job satisfaction if they feel compelled
to join particular factions or play political games.

2. Diminished Efficiency
Politics at work might cause workers to lose focus on their primary duties. Political scheming takes up time
that may be used for constructive activity. This diversion may result in missed deadlines, subpar work, and
overall worse productivity. Furthermore, employees' incentive to put in a lot of effort can drastically
decrease if they believe that rewards and promotions are determined more by political ties than by merit.

3. Elevated Attrition
High levels of workplace politics are frequently associated with greater turnover rates in organizations.
Skilled workers who experience marginalization or undervaluation may decide to quit the company in quest
of a more positive work atmosphere. Excessive employee turnover can be expensive, both in terms of
wasted potential and the costs related to hiring and onboarding new staff.

Effects on Organizational Performance and Employee Morale

1. Morale among employees
Employee morale can be significantly impacted by workplace politics. When political manipulation is
commonplace in an environment, staff members may experience mistrust and demotivation. This may result
in a poisonous workplace environment where people prioritize survival over creativity and teamwork.
However, when handled skillfully, a politically conscious and competitive work atmosphere can boost
morale by rewarding excellence and creating a sense of accomplishment.

2. Performance of the Organization

The management of workplace politics has a direct impact on the overall functioning of the firm. Positive
outcomes, such heightened competitiveness and innovation, can propel the company ahead and improve its
standing in the market and financial performance. On the other hand, unfavorable outcomes including low
morale, increased employee turnover, and decreased productivity can impede organizational performance. If
workplace politics are not addressed, an organization may experience problems with inefficiencies, lack of a
clear vision, and difficulty keeping top people.

3. Customs and Standing

The nature of workplace politics has a substantial impact on an organization's culture. A culture where
politics is all about power and money can harm an organization's reputation and make it harder to draw in
and keep talented workers. On the other hand, an organization can attract top talent and cultivate a positive
public image by enhancing its reputation as a desirable place to work through the implementation of a
culture that prioritizes fair play, transparency, and merit-based promotion.
