1.0 INTRODUCTION

Assalammualaikum, salam sejahtera and salam UiTM dihatiku. First of all, I would like
to introduce my name, I am Nur Najwa Syahirah binti Affendi. I’m 19 years old and I was
born in 9 September 2004 at Hospital Besar Ipoh. I live and grow up at Ipoh, Perak too.
I am the eldest sibling in my family and I have one younger brother. During free time, I
love to listen to music, sometimes I would read a novels. During high school, I studied in
the art class and took the art stream.

And now I am officially a diploma student in University Technology Mara (UiTM)


Merbok, Kedah. I’m studying Diploma in Library Informatic (KCDIM144) from Faculty
of Information Management.

And now I am writing this portfolio for the purpose of Study Skills assignment under the
subject UED102 (Study Skills). This subject will help me to gain more study skills and
more knowledge, it also can help improve my quality of doing work and assignment. In
this portfolio, I will includes some notes of what I had learn from Dr. Ida Normaya Mohd
Nasir.

Since the first day I’m in university, I spotted so many differences between university and
high school. As a student, I need to adapt this whole new universe. There is so many
aspect that changed, such as surrounding conditions, way of life and many more.

Tips for auditory learner


 Record lectures and then listen to them
 Repeat material out loud and in your own words
 Discuss materials in your study groups
 Read textbooks aloud
 Listen to wordless background music while studying

Tips for visual learner


 Turn notes into pictures, charts, or maps
 Avoid distractions (windows, doorways, etc.)
 Learn the big picture first and then focus on the details

4.0 TOPIC 3 LIBRARY AND CAMPUS RESOURCES

The Sultan Badlishah Library that located in UiTM Kedah campus Sungai Petani was fully
open and operational in 1998 which was originally located in the Academic Block. The
library moved to a new (permanent) building in mid-July 2001 and in 2002 the library used a
computerized library system, namely ILMU (Integrated Library Management Utilities). A
total of 750 users can be loaded in this library at one time. At the end of 2002, this library was
named as Perpustakaan Sultan Badlishah in conjunction with the name of His Majesty the
Sultan of Kedah. In 2018, the library has used WILS (Web Integrated Library System) to
replace the old ILMU System.

There is so many facilities that have been provided by the library for student to use it for
good. It is such as borrowing book, use or booking of a discussion room, locked lockers, and
computer.

There is a few steps to borrow books :


1. Use Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) to search the book.
2. Go to the shelves based on the numbers listed on the OPAC.
3. After found the book, go to the counter to borrow the book.

T&C of BORROW and RETURN BOOKS :


• Number of books for diploma students – 20 books.
• Duration – 14 days.

Other than that, every UITM have their own WebOPAC that help user to looking for a book,
e-book, articles and etc using it so the student don’t have to walk around to find the book for
their assignment.

5.0 TOPIC 4 TIME MANAGEMENT

Time management is define as the process of planning and exercising conscious control of
time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency, and
productivity. Get it right, and you'll end up working smarter, not harder. Time management
also known as the ability to we once time effectively of productivity especially work.

6.0 TOPIC 5 MEMORY, LEARNING AND IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

What is memory?
Memory is the personal record of past experiences. It is the brain's ability to store
information to use later. The ability of someone to remember about a few things in their daily
life like what they are doing now or what they are doing before or to remain any information
in their brain.

TYPES OF MEMORY

Tips to improve memory :

1. Massed practice (not good) vs space practice (good, recommended)


 Massed practice: Means you memorize and studying all the materials at one time.
 Space practice: Involve space time over some period of time.

2. Make time for exercise. Increased concentration is one of the benefits of regular
exercise. Exercise benefits everyone. A 2018 studylooking at 116 fifth-graders found
evidence and suggest daily physical activity could help to improve both concentration
and attention after just 4 weeks.

3. Take a break and improve sleep.

7.0 TOPIC 6 TAKING LECTURE NOTES

Do you know why is it important to take lecture notes? This because taking notes can help us
to pay more attention in class. Other than that, it is helping us to study for quiz, test or final
exam. Besides, it improving our knowledge and memory and providing accurate information.
Taking notes also help our brain organizing and processing all the data and information that
we learned and gained.

When is the exact time to take lecture notes?


We should take notes before, during and also after each lecture. This means taking notes
whilst you’re doing any preparatory reading, as well as when you are listening in class and
don’t forget to review your lecture notes periodically after the lecture is finished.

The correct way to take lecture notes :


 Put date and label notes
 Spend some space to write note
 Use simple words and symbols
 Use an outline to show :
 Main ideas
 Supports
 Examples
 Use our own language by follow what we can more understand.

More tips :

 Become an active listener during lecture time


 Focus your attention physically and make eye contact with the lecturer
 Listen with an open mind.
 Listen and take notes for the main points and related details
 Ask and answer the question.
 Don’t write down every words.
 Highlight the important keywords.

Strategies to become an active and good listener :

 Read the topics before start the class.


 Do revision about the last class before.
 Be attentive, but relaxed.
 Listen to the words and try to picture what the lecture is saying.
 Don't interrupt and don't impose your "solutions."
 Wait for the lecture to pause to ask clarifying questions.
 Pay attention in the class mentally.

8.0 TOPIC 7 ACADEMIC INTEGRITY AND PERFORMANCE
Academic integrity means acting in a way that is honest, fair, respectful and responsible
in your studies and academic work. It means applying these values in your own work.

What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism is imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization. It
is action of taking ideas, writing or other’s creation and claim that the creation is their own
work. If in our own words, plagiarism is like copy and paste from a source without give them
a credit.

How to avoid plagiarism?


1. We need to think our own idea and created it ourselves.
2. Use the word or ideas with the permission but don’t copy all the words exactly.
3. Put the link of the web that you take the information for the credit purpose.
4. Paraphrase the sentences but be careful because it still can be detect as plagiarism if
not be done properly.
