 Is used to compensate for tubing expansion /
contraction

 Three things to consider : -

- Maximum expansion due to tubing average
temperature (OPEN)
- Maximum contraction due to tubing average
temperature decrease (CLOSE)
- Contraction of the major string when the minor
string is held by the packer

 Internal pressure operated tool

 6 or 12 cycle opening sequence

 Tool can be locked in place while RIH to prevent

inadvertent shifting

 Insensitive to circulating rate

 Capable of spotting fluids or nitrogen

F ( 15K ) is an annulus over pressure operated
reversing valve commonly referred to as the
“SHORT”

6 DST - Client
3/30/2024
 Is operated by applied annulus pressure, once activated
the valve is permanently closed

 Installed directly above the PCT, valve can cut 7/32”

electric line if in-between ball valve

 Can be converted to run as a pump through safety valve

7 DST - Client

 Tool is operated by applied annulus pressure. Once
activated the valve closes but will open whenever
pressure above the valve exceeds annulus pressure

 Tool is usually ran directly above primary test valve

Pipe Tester Valve (PTV)
 Tool is operated by applied annulus pressure. Once
activated the valve stay permanently open.

 Very Useful for pressure test workstring RIH

 Can be use RIH dry and the open to flow the well.

 Tool is operated by applied annulus pressure. Once
activated the valve is permanently locked open and
bypass closed

 Tool is usually installed anywhere in the BHA

 Allows automatic filling of string while RIH

 Allows pressure testing at any time

 Tool is operated by applied annulus pressure, once
activated the valve closes but will open whenever
pressure above the valve exceeds formation pressure

 Designed for underbalance testing operation

 Tool run below primary test valve

 The PORT tool is a single shot device
operated by annulus applied pressure
trapping a reference pressure in the PCT.
When pump pressure is bled-off, the relief
valve bleeds the reference pressure to 350 –
450 psi above the hydrostatic.
 Features : -
- Allows string to be run in tension
- Integral by-pass also FPM can be
added if required

13 DST - Client

 Requires only low level pressure pulses to operate
 Operating mechanism is immune to mud and well
effluent
 No nitrogen in tool
 Large flow area Circulating valve
 All tool operations recorded in memory for post job
evaluation

14 DST - Client

 Allows quick release from a down hole
string whenever the tools below the Safety
Joint gets stuck

 Hydraulic JAR is used whenever the packer or gun
gets stuck, when activated the JAR provides an
upward shock.
 Hydraulic JAR consists of two parts : -
- A spline mandrel attached to the stuck tool
- Housing which is connected to the
free tools
 Types of JAR : - JAR – C & JAR – F

 Generally designed to isolate the perforated interval from the mud column.
The weight set on the packer compresses the rubber elements against the
walls of the casing creating a seal between the annulus and tubing.

 Packer Sections : -
- The drag block and slip assembly
- Packer bypass
- Packer elements

18 DST - Client

Positrieve Packer

 Incorporates an extra section that prevents the packer

from being pumped out of the hole
