the company began as a small shipping line operating routes primarily
between Denmark and the United States. In the ensuing decades, Maersk
Line steadily expanded its fleet and global presence, weathering
economic challenges and geopolitical shifts along the way.
• A significant milestone in Maersk Line's history came in the 1960s with
the advent of containerization. Recognizing the potential of container
shipping to revolutionize global trade, Maersk Line embraced this
innovative technology, becoming one of the early adopters of container
vessels. This strategic decision propelled the company to new heights,
enabling it to transport goods more efficiently and cost-effectively than
ever before.
• Throughout the latter half of the 20th century and into the 21st century,
Maersk Line continued to grow and diversify its operations. The
acquisition of strategic assets, such as shipping routes, terminals, and
logistics companies, bolstered its position as a global leader in container
shipping and logistics. Notably, the company played a pivotal role in the
consolidation of the shipping industry, participating in mergers and
alliances to strengthen its market position and optimize its network.
• Amidst the challenges posed by economic recessions, fluctuating freight
rates, and evolving regulatory landscapes, Maersk Line demonstrated
resilience and adaptability. The company invested in modernizing its
fleet, implementing cutting-edge technologies, and expanding its service
offerings to meet the evolving needs of customers in an increasingly
interconnected world.
• In recent years, Maersk Line has embarked on a transformative journey
toward sustainability and digitalization. Recognizing the imperative to
reduce its environmental footprint and embrace digital innovation, the
company has launched ambitious initiatives to promote energy efficiency,

ocean cargo transportation. They play a vital role in moving goods around the
world, making them a significant contributor to international trade. Here's a
closer look at Maersk Line’s Ocean cargo operations:
The Power of Containers:
Maersk primarily utilizes containers for ocean freight. These standardized metal
boxes allow for efficient and secure transportation of a wide variety of goods.
Maersk boasts a massive fleet of containers, shipping an impressive 12 million
containers globally each year.

Their containerized approach offers several advantages:

• Efficiency: Containers allow for rapid loading and unloading at ports,

3|Page
• Full Container Load (FCL): This is ideal for large shipments that fill an
entire container.
• Less Than Container Load (LCL): This option is cost-effective for
smaller shipments that share space in a container with other cargo.

Advanced Tracking:
Maersk offers sophisticated tracking tools that allow you to monitor your
shipment's progress in real-time. This transparency provides peace of mind,
knowing exactly where your cargo is located throughout its journey.

Additional Services:
Beyond basic transportation, Maersk Line may also provide additional ocean
freight services such as:

• Customs clearance: Ensuring your cargo complies with import and

export regulations.
• Insurance: Protecting your shipment against potential risks.
• Inland transportation: Connecting your cargo from origin to final
destination, even if it's located far from a port.
By leveraging their vast experience, global network, and advanced technology,
Maersk Line offers a comprehensive solution for all your ocean cargo needs.

2. INLAND SERVICE

Maersk Line offers inland mode transport solutions as part of its comprehensive
logistics services. Inland mode transport refers to the movement of cargo
between ports and inland destinations via various modes such as rail, road, and
inland waterways. Maersk Line leverages its extensive network and partnerships
with inland transportation providers to offer seamless door-to-door delivery
solutions for its customers.
This includes arranging for the pickup and delivery of containers from ports to
inland destinations or vice versa, utilizing a combination of rail and trucking
services. By integrating inland mode transport into its logistics offerings,
Maersk Line enhances the efficiency and flexibility of its supply chain
solutions, enabling customers to access a wider range of markets and optimize
their distribution networks.
Additionally, Maersk Line ensures end-to-end visibility and control over the
transportation process, leveraging digital technologies and real-time tracking
systems to monitor cargo movements and provide timely updates to customers.
Overall, Maersk Line's inland mode transport services complement its core
maritime shipping operations, facilitating the smooth flow of goods from origin
to destination.

5|Page
While Maersk Line's core business is ocean freight, they understand the
importance of seamless logistics across the entire supply chain. That's why they
offer a robust network for inland transportation in India, and likely in other
regions around the world, to move your containerized cargo beyond the ports.
Here's a breakdown of their inland transportation options:

Road Freight:

Trucks are the most common mode for inland transportation, offering flexibility
for point-to-point deliveries over short or long distances. Maersk likely has
partnerships with trucking companies to ensure reliable and efficient movement
of your cargo.

Train Freight:

Trains provide a cost-effective option for large cargo volumes, particularly over
longer distances. Maersk might have established relationships with rail
companies to offer competitive rates and scheduled train services for your cargo
needs.

Barge Transportation (in some regions):

In specific locations with suitable waterways, Maersk might leverage barges for
inland transportation. This can be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly
option for certain types of cargo on navigable rivers and canals.

Benefits of Booking Inland Transport with Maersk Line:

Single Point of Contact: By integrating inland transportation with your ocean

freight booking, you'll have a single point of contact at Maersk, streamlining
communication and simplifying logistics management.
End-to-End Visibility: Maersk's tracking systems might extend to inland
transportation, providing visibility over your cargo's journey from origin to final
destination.

1. DRY CONTAINERS

Dry containers (DC) are called “dry” because they don't have any temperature
controls — they are basic containers for cargo such as toys and clothes. They
are the most common type of container in the world, with 90% of sea freight
loaded into them, and they come in different shipping container dimensions and
variants:

20-foot Container or 1 TEU: The standard 20-foot shipping container or “dry

van” is one of the most commonly used containers for shipment of goods as
ocean freight. They are designed to carry more weight than voluminous cargo.
This is suitable for heavy cargo such as minerals, metal, machinery, sugar,
paper, cement, and steel coils. You can use a cubic meter calculator for the
dimension of a 20ft shipping container.

40-foot Container or 1 FFE: Another very common size, the 40-foot dry
container is designed to carry and store more voluminous cargo rather than
heavy cargo. For example, furniture, steel pipes, paper scrap or cotton.

40 High Cube Container (40HC): These shipping containers are made for
even lighter cargo. 40HC shipping containers have taller dimensions, so you can
fit in more cargo. However, due to weight limitations per container, you cannot
use them for heavier goods

2. REEFER CONTAINER

Maersk is a Danish carrier that has the largest reefer container fleet in the world,
moving a quarter of the world's reefer containers. Maersk built its first
specialized reefer container, the DRAGØR MÆRSK, in 1961, and placed a
record order for 500 in 1975, entering the containerized reefer trade. As of 2022,
Maersk has 504,000 reefer plugs on its 735 vessels, while MSC has 443,000.
Maersk's latest innovation is the Remote Container Management (RCM) system,
which allows customers to monitor temperature, humidity, and CO2. In 2022,
Maersk upgraded more than 80% of its reefer fleet to deliver hourly data to
Captain Peter, reducing the risk of damaged goods and food waste. By the end
of 2023, 90% of the Maersk reefer fleet will support hourly dialog transmission.
Maersk's reefer containers have different temperature ranges depending on
the type of container:

• 20' Standard Reefer: -30C to +30C

• 40' High Cube Standard Reefer: -30C to +30C
• 40' High Cube Magnum Reefer: -35C to +30C
• 40' High Cube Starc are™: -30C to +30C

expensive to use. A 40' high-cube reefer container is 11.58 meters long, has a
height of 2.50 meters, and an inside width of 2.28 meters. It also has a tare
weight of 3,900 kilos.

3. HIGH CUBE CONTAINER

High-cube containers represent a vital innovation in the realm of shipping,

offering increased vertical space compared to standard containers. This surplus
vertical clearance proves invaluable for accommodating voluminous or
lightweight goods that would otherwise exceed the confines of traditional
containers. High-cube containers find extensive application across diverse
industries, ranging from retail and manufacturing to automotive and
construction. They are particularly advantageous for transporting items such as
furniture, appliances, machinery, textiles, and other bulky commodities. Their
versatility enables businesses to optimize shipping efficiency and maximize
cargo volume, contributing to cost-effectiveness and streamlined logistics
operations. Additionally, high-cube containers integrate seamlessly into existing
supply chain networks, leveraging standardized dimensions and compatibility
with container handling equipment worldwide. As a result, they play a pivotal
role in facilitating global trade and commerce, offering a practical solution for
the transportation of goods across continents and oceans

High-cube containers, also known as high-cube dry containers, have dimensions

Maersk Line:

1. Booking and Documentation: The process begins when a customer

initiates a booking for shipping their cargo with Maersk Line. This involves
providing details such as cargo type, volume, destination, and desired shipping
schedule. Once the booking is confirmed, Maersk Line generates the necessary
documentation, including bills of lading, shipping instructions, and customs
paperwork.

18 | P a g e
2. Cargo Handling and Loading: Upon receipt of the cargo at the designated

authorities, stevedores, and terminal operators to ensure efficient loading
procedures while adhering to safety and security protocols.

3. Voyage Execution: Once the cargo is loaded onto the vessel, Maersk Line's
crew and operations team manage the voyage execution process. This includes
navigating the vessel along the designated shipping route, optimizing speed and
fuel consumption, and adhering to international maritime regulations and safety
standards.

4. Transshipment and Intermodal Transport: In cases where cargo needs to

be transshipped or transported via intermodal means (e.g., rail, truck), Maersk
Line facilitates the transfer of containers between vessels or between different
modes of transport at designated transshipment hubs or inland terminals. This
ensures the seamless continuity of the shipping process and minimizes transit
times.

5. Customs Clearance and Compliance: Throughout the shipping process,

Maersk Line ensures compliance with customs regulations and procedures at

submitting required documentation, and liaising with customs authorities to
expedite cargo release and mitigate any potential delays or issues.

diverse needs of businesses and industries worldwide.

Essential transportation costs

These costs are fundamental expenses, comprising direct charges associated

with shipping.

1. Mode of transportation (air, sea, or land)

The speed and budget implications of your chosen transportation mode are
crucial. Air freight wins on time but burns more fuel, while sea freight is a
costeffective alternative but is slower and more suited for large-volume
shipments. Land freight (road and rail) offers flexible options, each with its own
priceperformance sweet spot. Choose the best option as per your needs.

2. Type of freight (spot or contract)

Contract shipping offers predictable costs with long-term agreements — ideal
for regular freight transporting and shielding you from fluctuating factors and
market volatility. However, if your requirements are sporadic or flexible, spot
shipping can offer agility and cost savings. Weigh your options and choose the
option that aligns with your volume and predictability.

3. Tariffs and fuel surcharges

Global trade comes with numerous taxes and surcharges, adding layers to your
cost. Before shipping, understand international trade policies and potential
duties based on your destination and goods to avoid surprises. Consider volatile
prices and other factors in your budget and opt for fuel-efficient shipping or eco-
delivery models when possible.

4. Freight weight and distance

The greater the distance and weight of your shipment, the more resources it
demands — including increased fuel consumption, extended transit times, and
the complexity of managing logistics networks. Consider whether you need to
ship a full container load or less-than-container load.

20 | P a g e
The Journey of a container: At the terminal. Maasvlakte II terminal in
Rotterdam

Additional fees and charges

These expenses are for supplementary but vital factors beyond the basic freight
shipping costs.

5. Terminal handling charges (THC)

Freight handling within ports and terminals incurs added fees for services like
loading/unloading goods, storage, and processing. Understanding THC
components and negotiating efficient freight movement times with your
provider can potentially reduce these charges. Note that THC depends and
varies as per specific terminal/port.

6. Customs clearance fee

International shipping involves regular interactions with customs officials. Duty
fees, clearance inspections, and documentation costs can vary depending on
your route and the HS code of your goods. Diligent preparation of customs
documentation, understanding applicable rates, and staying informed about
trade regulations can help prevent unexpected costs as well as delays.

7. Demurrage and detention charges

Delays can be costly. Demurrage charges kick in if your container overstays
inside the port, while detention fees arise for container overstays outside the
port. To avoid costly demurrage and detention charges, have realistic transit
time expectations, proactive communication with your logistics provider, and
contingency planning for emergencies.

8. Accessorial charges
Special handling, security measures, and insurance add value to your shipment’s
journey but also come with a price tag. These costs provide optional services
beyond standard shipping for specialised, tailored demands. So, evaluate your
specific needs based on your cargo value and risk profile. Prioritise necessary
add-ons to avoid inflating your budget unnecessarily.

Warehousing and distribution supply chain overview

Consolidation centres

27 | P a g e
A warehouse perfectly placed and connected to your sourcing areas can combine
materials and goods pre-export, helping you optimise your landside movements
and container loads.

Our portfolio comprises bonded and non-bonded warehouses, facilities located

within free trade zones, and others near/within ports for easy transfer to ship.

We offer domestic and regional/international consolidation, including

multicountry consolidation. Offered at several international hubs, including our
major East-West transshipment hub at Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia, these
facilities offer multi-country consolidation and a host of product value-added
services, within the free trade zone.

Deconsolidation centres
When your cargo arrives at its destination market, keep your goods flowing
through the supply chain without missing a beat. Many of our facilities are
ideally situated close to key ocean ports for major shipping routes, allowing
faster throughput of your cargo.

Our deconsolidation solutions have multiple service offerings depending on

where your cargo needs to go – straight transload, or building consignments
direct to distribution centres or final destinations.

Our facilities also offer pit-stop solutions: late localisation with a wide range of
value-added services, all supported by industry-leading Warehouse Management
Systems. When flexibility to minimise go-to-market efforts matters, our services
can offer you a competitive advantage (e.g., quality controls, re-packing, returns
management or product disposal).
