Module 5.1: Energy Auditing Numerical (10 marks)

Q. A classroom accomodates 10 standard ceiling fans with 75W consumption. Energy

auditor has suggested replacing them each by BLDC fans of 28W. The cost of one unit is
Rs10 and cost of one BLDC fan is Rs. 3000. Find annual energy saving and simple payback.
Assume number of working hours 08/day and 200 days in a year. [10] [23]
Ans. Given, Number of standard ceiling fans: 10
Power consumption of standard ceiling fan: 75W
Power consumption of BLDC fan: 28W
Cost of unit: Rs. 10
Cost of one BLDC fan: Rs. 3000
Number of working hours per day: 8
Number of working days per year: 200

Let's start by calculating the annual energy consumption for both types of fans:
1. For standard ceiling fans:
Energy consumption per standard ceiling fan per day = Power × Time = 75W × 8 hours =
600 Wh
Total energy consumption for all standard ceiling fans per day = 600 Wh/fan × 10 fans =
6000 Wh
Annual energy consumption for all standard ceiling fans = 6000 Wh/day × 200 days/year =
1,200,000 Wh = 1200 kWh

2. For BLDC fans:

Energy consumption per BLDC fan per day = 28W × 8 hours = 224 Wh
Total energy consumption for all BLDC fans per day = 224 Wh/fan × 10 fans = 2240 Wh
Annual energy consumption for all BLDC fans = 2240 Wh/day × 200 days/year = 448,000
Wh = 448 kWh

1
Now, let's calculate the annual energy savings:
Annual energy savings = Energy consumption of standard fans - Energy consumption of BLDC
fans = 1200 kWh - 448 kWh = 752 kWh

Next, let's calculate the cost of replacing the standard fans with BLDC fans:
Total cost of replacing standard fans with BLDC fans = Cost of one BLDC fan × Number of fans
= 3000 Rs × 10 fans = 30,000 Rs

Finally, let's calculate the simple payback period:

Simple payback period = Total cost of replacement / Annual energy savings = 30,000 Rs / 752
kWh ≈ 39.89 Rs/kWh

So, the annual energy savings would be 752 kWh, and the simple payback period for replacing
the standard fans with BLDC fans would be approximately 39.89 years.

Q. An 80HP motor is to operate at full load for 800hr/yr, half load 1800hr/yr, and to
be switched off the rest of the time. The following motors are available.
Energy Efficient Motor Efficiency at full load 0.92
Efficiency at half load 0.90
Standard Motor Efficiency at full load 0.90
Efficiency at half load 0.88
The cost of energy is Rs. 7.5/kWh. Which motor to be selected based on yearly if the cost of
Standard Motor is 200000/- and cost ofsaving in consumption energy efficient motor is
270000/- then in your opinion which motor to be selected for the installation? [10]
