A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN FOR DEMONSTRATION

TEACHING IN DT311 CONSTRUCTION ESTIMATE AND SCALE

MODELING

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Determine the process on how to estimate concrete hollow blocks
in construction
2. Develop an appreciation towards understanding the estimation of
Concrete hollow blocks.
3. Calculate for the CHB quantity by estimating an actual wall and
room.

1. Motivation

Game Instructions:

Preparation (5 minutes):

Draw a simple outline of a wall on the

poster board or whiteboard. Label it as
"CHB Wall."

Create several sticky notes or small pieces

of paper, each representing a CHB. Write
numbers on the sticky notes to represent
different quantities of CHBs (e.g., 10, 20,
30, etc.).

Introduction (2 minutes):

Gather the students and introduce the

game by explaining that they will be
participating in a CHB Estimation Game
to kickstart their understanding of
estimating CHB quantities for building
walls.

Game Rules (2 minutes):

Divide the students into two teams.

Explain that each team will take turns

estimating the number of CHBs needed to
complete the wall outline on the board.

One member from each team will come

forward to make their estimation.

The team whose estimation is closest to

the actual number of CHBs needed will
earn points.

Gameplay (10 minutes):

Start the timer and invite the first team to

send a representative to make their
estimation.
The representative from the team will
select a sticky note representing their
estimation and place it on the wall outline.

Repeat the process with the second team.

After both teams have made their

estimations, reveal the actual number of
CHBs needed by counting the sticky notes
placed on the wall outline.

Award points to the team whose

estimation is closest to the actual number
of CHBs. If a team's estimation matches
the actual number exactly, award bonus
points.

Rotate representatives from each team for

subsequent rounds until all members have
had a chance to participate.

Discussion (5 minutes):

After several rounds, gather the students

for a brief discussion.

Ask them about their strategies for

making estimations and what factors they
considered.

Reinforce the importance of careful

observation and measurement in
estimation, as well as the need for practice
to improve accuracy.

Estimating Concrete Hollow Block

(CHB) Quantity

Concrete Hollow Blocks are used for a

variety of purposes and are classified as
load-bearing and non-load bearing blocks.
Local hardware stores usually have a
variety of 3 commercially-available CHBs
– 4”, 6”, 8”.

HOW TO ESTIMATE THE

QUANTITY OF CHB FOR YOUR
CONCRETE WALL:

The easiest way to estimate CHB quantity

is by the Area Method. A piece of
standard concrete hollow block (CHB) has
a surface area of 0.08 m2. In accordance
to this, a one square meter area will
require 12.5 pcs of CHB.

1m2 / 0.08m2 = 12.5 pcs of CHB

Determine your initial wall area:

Determine the area of your wall. The

formula for a square wall is Length *
Height.

Square Wall Area = Length * Height

Make sure to take into consideration the

often overlooked information that will
affect the area of your wall – for example,
the depth of your beam or the
underground foundation CHB.

Determine door and window areas:

Determine if there are any openings in

your wall – e.g. windows or doors. If
there are, get the total area of the
openings.

Get your total wall area:

Subtract your total openings with the

initial area of your wall.

Total Wall Area = Initial Wall Area –

Total Wall Opening Area

Multiply your total wall area by 12.5, the

number of pieces needed for a 1m2 wall:

No. of CHB = Total Wall Area * 12.5

SAMPLE PROBLEM 1

Compute for the quantity of 4”

concrete hollow blocks (CHB) needed
for a wall that is 3 meters high and 2
meters long.

SOLUTION

Determine your initial wall area:

Square Wall Area = Length * Height

= 2m * 3m

= 6m2

Determine door and window areas:

There are no specified doors or windows.

Get your total wall area:

Total Wall Area = Initial Wall Area –

Total Wall Opening Area

= 6m2 – 0m2

= 6m2

Multiply your total wall area by 12.5, the

number of pieces needed for a 1m2 wall:

No. of CHB = 6m2 * 12.5

= 75 pcs. of CHB

SAMPLE PROBLEM 2

Compute for the quantity of 8” concrete

hollow blocks (CHB) needed for a wall
that is 3 meters high and 5 meters long
with a door that is 2.1 meter high and 0.6
meter wide and a window that is 0.6 meter
wide and 1 meter high.

SOLUTION

Determine your initial wall area:

Square Wall Area = Length * Height

= 5m * 3m

= 15m2

Determine door and window areas:

Door Area = 2.1m * 0.6m

= 1.26m2

Window Area = 1m * 0.6m

= 0.6m2

Total Opening Area = 1.26m2 + 0.6m2

= 1.86m2

Get your total wall area:

Total Wall Area = Initial Wall Area –

Total Wall Opening Area

= 15m2 – 1.86m2

= 13.14m2

Multiply your total wall area by 12.5, the

number of pieces needed for a 1m2 wall:

No. of CHB = 13.14m2 * 12.5

= 164.25 pcs of CHB

~ 165 pcs. of CHB

3. APPLICATION

Materials Needed:

 Whiteboard or flip chart

 Markers
 Sample wall scenarios (prepared in
advance)
 Construction paper or cardboard
 Rulers or measuring tapes
 Scissors
 Glue
 Decorative materials (optional)

Instructions:

1. Divide the class into small groups

of 3-4 students each.
2. Provide each group with a sample
wall scenario (similar to the
sample problems provided earlier
in the lesson plan) and materials
for creating a scale model.
3. Instruct the groups to work
together to calculate the total wall
area and estimate the quantity of
CHBs required for their assigned
scenario. Remind them to follow
the steps outlined in the lesson
plan for accurate estimation.
4. Once the estimation is complete,
guide the groups to use the
dimensions of their walls to create
a scale model using the provided
materials. Encourage them to be
creative and pay attention to detail
in replicating the structure.
5. Allow time for groups to discuss
and collaborate on their scale
model designs, considering factors
such as wall height, openings for
doors and windows, and the
arrangement of CHBs.
6. After a designated time period,
have each group present their
estimated quantity of CHBs and
showcase their scale model to the
class. Encourage them to explain
their design choices and any
challenges they encountered.
7. As a class, compare the estimated
quantities of CHBs for each
scenario and discuss any variations
or discrepancies. Evaluate the
scale models based on accuracy,
creativity, and attention to detail.
