MYP 5 Personal Project Report - Creating An Art History Book

- Criterion A - Planning

Identifying Learning and Product Goal

Learning Goal

On the 6th of September, the beginning of the year, in ISM we were presented with the personal
project. In the theatre, the teachers gathered all of the 11th graders to inform us about the personal project.
Even though I’m a new student I already knew about the personal project as I’m not new to the IB system.
I’ve talked to several 12th graders about the personal project, as well as attended exhibitions, helped in
the exhibitions, and talked to personal project coordinators in my old school. I’ve noticed that the hardest
part of the personal project is keeping track of your process. I learned that doesn’t matter how hard the
project is, if it’s properly organized what matters is a grade. Luckily I have ideas in mind.

Firstly I wanted to come up with a mind map, something to help me collect all of my ideas from
personal interests to make my personal project. I wanted to have as many ideas as possible and then use
the elimination process to narrow down my answer to one. While making the mind map I was thinking of
what I’m good at, my passions, my talents, my interests, things that I’ve always been curious to study
about, and what I want to continue doing in my future.

While making this mind map I did some research on personal projects, primary and secondary.
For example, there have been many instances where a
student makes a comic book or and cookbook. Last year in
my old school a student made a watch catalog, so I thought I
could also make a catalog of something I’m interested in,
like art and movies. Online, the art portfolio option stood up
to me as I’ve always been interested in art and it is my
backup subject for university, so knowing how to make a
portfolio would be helpful in applying. Art is my backup
option, but medicine is my first option. I’ve always been
interested in the human body, and have a passion for helping
people. I would love to know more about medicine so I
wanted to make a medicine helping with anxiety and/or
headaches. One of my biggest passions is volleyball, and I
always try to find a way to research more about it and improve it, and I incorporate it everywhere. A
friend of mine gave me an idea of how to include volleyball in a personal project. He had made a tutorial
video to teach people how to dunk in basketball, so one of my ideas was to teach how to attack in
volleyball. Even though I have a big passion for volleyball and medicine, I decided to go another way.
Lastly, I narrowed it down to 2 ideas; an art portfolio and a secret of art magazine/catalogue.

1
I have always been interested in art. I constantly draw, everywhere, every day I have a new
drawing on my hand, for each notebook I have I always have drawings on
the few last pages, I have a sketchbook that I take with me almost
everywhere; and in my old room, back home in Albania, I have two whole
walls covered only in drawings. I also had a lot of experience with art in
my old school. I also have artists in my family, such as my aunt, who is a
painter, a cosmographer, and an art teacher at the Academy of Arts in
Tirana. She has always pushed me, and given me projects where I get to
help with her costume designs. I’ve been to one of her university classes
and will go again soon enough, she always helps me and gives me advice
on my art. She taught me how to paint, and always got me started, she
found any material I needed, and I always consulted her for my projects
and ideas.

Recently, I got interested in learning about the art style of the Renaissance, the painting
techniques, the colors, the proportions, and so on. I have been to many museums and churches relating to
the Renaissance, such as the Vatican. I studied the Renaissance in my old school; for example, once I had
a unit where my summative was based on the artist Raffaello. Except for that I’ve always loved the
mystery, especially in art, the meaning behind them, the secrets they hold, and so on, I’ve even seen a
documentary on Netflix some time ago exploring this topic.

Having these details and ideas in mind, I decided to consult one of the art teachers in ISM, Ms.
Ravenhall. I went to her class during the break, and she said to do both. To make a book or magazine
where I explore different art and try to emulate their art style. To achieve this learning goal I will have to
use my research skills, my thinking skills, and my communication skills (atl skills)1. My goal is to use as
many primary sources as I can and analyze and evaluate them. on my own and applying that in my
personal project, and also communicating with whomever I need to so I can learn.

Therefore, by the end of this year, I should know about the art during the Renaissance, mainly in Italy, the
history and mystery of it, and be able to replicate it myself.

Product Goal

To guide me through this personal project process I’m going to use the global concept of Personal
& Cultural Expression. How can I express the artistic culture of the Renaissance through my knowledge
and my own art skills? By creating a “Renaissance Book”.2 Each chapter would talk about an artist in the
Renaissance, a brief history of the artist, the mystery of one of their paintings, and try to replicate and
analyze one of their iconic paintings of hands. I want to make at least three chapters, so a minimum of 3

artists, but of course, I’ll try my best to make more. To reach the goal of finishing this book with as many
artists as I can, I will need to focus on my research skills, self-management skills, and analyzing skills
(thinking skills). 3

So far I have thought of four iconic artists of the Renaissance period; Leonardo da Vinci,
Michelangelo, Raffaelo, and Donatello. This is how I plan to structure this “book”. Firstly, I will have a
short prologue where I talk about my personal connections to this book, the process, and how I came up
with it. After the prologue, I will have an opening page talking about the Renaissance period and general
information to transition to the main part. Then start the chapters. Depending on how much time I have,
that’s how many chapters will be there. The structure of each chapter will follow this example:
1. I will write a brief history of Michelangelo.
2. Afterward, I will take the “Last Judgment” art piece and analyze close-up details, hidden
meanings, Easter eggs, and possibly conspiracy theories.
3. Lastly, I will try to recreate the hands of “Creation of Adam”, using most of the same materials,
and later on annotation on sketches. (I will take note of the process, observations, and analysis)
And lastly, there will be a short epilogue explaining how I feel about the results and process.

To showcase my knowledge of the art during the Renaissance period, my book will have
information on every detail of the individual artist, starting from their history and art style, and ending
with their thoughts and ideas

- To reach my personal goals I must create a SMART goal table to state what I want to achieve by the end of the personal
project.
- To reach my goal properly and as stress-free as possible, I will make a schedule or plan to properly execute my process
and not go in blindly.

Academic - I still need to keep up my grades for my other classes, so I need to come up with a schedule to fit in both my other work
Goals and personal projects. (1 hour pp, 1 hour other work). I of course need to make time for my corriculars and have a bit of
free time.
- In order to have some free time in the end, I will use the most common strategy which is to work first then have fun.

SMART Goal 4

To make this kind of book will require a lot of time and concentration. It is a hard task and I need
to have a clear idea of what I’m doing with a clear plan and set of goals. Therefore I have created a
SMART goal. Making this SMART goal helps me to realize what is realistic and what is not, helps me set
a specific goal with realistic achievements, and helps me to plan my process.

more cultured and expand my knowledge of art. Except for that, I wanted to keep things interesting by adding the
conspiracy theory/mystery section. I hope that through this book others interested in this topic can use my book
to learn from it and I hope it can help students learn more about the art culture of the past that changed
everything. I dream of targeting art enthusiasts, or renaissance enthusiasts, as well as growing artists, and students
in general. The obstacles that I will face will be having to use media that I have never used before to create this
book as well as challenging myself to use as many primary resources.

Research

Identifying Prior Knowledge and Skills

As I have mentioned before I have a lot of prior knowledge on the matter. I have been to many
museums and churches in different regions that showcase the art of the Renaissance and also information
on it. I have studied it many times in school for I&S (past years) and also visual arts. I have made a
summative of Michelangelo on Leda and the Swan, a summative for Raffaelo, and other summatives that
don’t really concern the art culture.

The museums and churches I’ve visited are:

- Vatican Museum
- Uffizi Gallery Florence
- Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
- Palazzo Ducale Venezia
- Onufri National Iconographic Museum, Berat (Muzeu Kombëtar Ikonografik Onufri)
- Doria Pamphilij (Van Dyck)
What I need to research

To create a good product, I need to first learn the history of each artist more deeply. I need to find
out about more artists to make my product as multi-diverse as possible. I want to research more on
orthodox art during the Renaissance period, learn more about the golden age of Dutch art, and see if I can
include even more countries.

I need to research and learn more about the use of different media, such as oil, carbon, fresco,
tempera, pencil, and more. I need to learn how to use these materials in different techniques to fit the art
style that that specific artist uses. I need to learn which specific artwork, or part of the artwork, would
help me understand that artist’s style. For example, to learn the painting technique, anatomy, and the
process of Michelangelo I would paint the hands in the fresco painting “The Creation of Adam”.

For each artist, I also need to choose 1 artwork known to have mysteries. Usually, the iconic
paintings have the most mysteries, that’s why they are famous. There have been many different studies on
different paintings, and thanks to technology we can discover a lot. The mystery is a famous topic of the
Renaissance as many things have been lost as it was a long time ago, the 15th until the 16th century, and it
being a rebirth of the Middle Ages, many people are curious to discover how that rebirth came to be.

- Criterion B - Applying Skills

Achieving my Learning Goal - ATL Skill

For my learning goal, I wrote in Criterion A that I will be developing and applying my research
skills, communication skills, and thinking skills. My research skills were mainly improved when
searching about my artists. I used some of my old works as a base and built on it. I used many websites
and had so much help when I was on a run or needed more explanation on a specific detail. I would also
research before going into a new art technique just to have some basic knowledge so I wouldn’t have to
go in completely blind. To develop my research skills I used the OPVL technique, based on that I was
supposed to define the origin of the source, the purpose, the value, and the limitation. In the meantime, I
was supposed to organize my research, such as using citations, keeping detailed notes, avoiding
plagiarism, and facilitating proper referencing. Also, I developed the ability to synthesize information
from multiple sources into coherent and meaningful insights. (Evidence: sources above). Research skills
are a valuable ability that enables me to gain knowledge, cultivate critical thinking, and make
well-informed judgments. Their adaptability, promotion of good communication, and improvement of
problem-solving skills are their strengths.

These abilities do have limitations though, such as the time-consuming nature of in-depth study, the
possibility of biases and assumptions, difficulties locating reliable materials, and the constantly changing
ethical landscape. Notwithstanding these constraints, skillful researchers manage these intricacies,
capitalizing on their advantages to make a significant contribution to scholarly, vocational, and individual
endeavors. The ongoing acquisition and utilization of research skills enable me to interact with
information efficiently and make wise decisions in a constantly changing and dynamic environment

When I went to Rome I got a better idea of these artists' intentions. Visiting many different
churches helped me see some common patterns that the artists had. We had an excellent tour guide who
would point out important easter eggs and explain the history behind paintings which helped me a lot to
get a better idea of the purposes the artists had and a bit of their personality, this is an improvement of my
communication skills. Knowing the mindset of these artists helps me make the artwork better, just like in
acting where the actor will become the character to know better their responses and improvisation making
them a better actor, it’s the same psychology or philosophy for visual art. My experience of interacting
with people and the way how I communicate with them has contributed to positive relationships. The
example that I mentioned is one of the best examples of how you can resolve challenges through effective
communication. When creating art you need to be in the same mood and atmosphere as when you got the
idea of that piece so you can have a consistent style and message, especially when recreating someone
else’s work it’s better to think like them so when faced with a problem you can face it like them.
However, certain limitations may occur, such as misunderstandings brought on by different
communication styles, difficulties communicating complex ideas or subtle emotions, and
misinterpretations. Furthermore, variables such as individual communication preferences and cultural
disparities might affect how effective a conversation is. Despite these obstacles, people with strong
communication skills can effectively negotiate this complexity, improving their capacity to interact,
persuade

9
And lastly, my thinking skills were developed while creating my artwork. I’ve started to develop
my critical thinking skills through analyzing the history, easter eggs, mindsets, and techniques, by
challenging my own and others’ assumptions about information, ideas, situations, or techniques. During
this time I was engaged actively in written material that I found, by annotating, highlighting, or taking
notes. Regularly I reflected on my thinking process and I was trying to identify any cognitive biases or
assumptions that might influence my judgments. The best way to learn is to do. Having almost no
experience in all of these techniques I had to think of the most logical answers for a solution and
eventually, I got the hang of it. There are times when I develop my critical thinking skills by applying the
feedback that I got from my supervisor. This skill will allow me to reach my learning goal as I mentioned
before. Without using my critical thinking skills my product wouldn’t be possible.

However, limitations may arise due to cognitive biases, emotional influences, or limited
perspectives. Additionally, the process of critical thinking can be time-consuming, and I was facing
challenges in overcoming deeply ingrained beliefs. Despite these limitations, honing critical thinking
skills enhances my capacity to navigate uncertainties, make sound judgments, and contribute thoughtfully
to various academic, professional, and personal domains.

Achieving my Product Goal - ATL Skill

In Criteria A I state that to make my product and complete my product goal I will have to use my
research skills, analyzing skills, and time management skills. I develop these skills very well during the
process. My research skills were mixed with the learning goal. I had to research many techniques such as
charcoal, silverpoint, oil paint on wood, and the hardest fresco or alfresco. When researching about these
skills I would first go to my secondary recourses, the internet. I used various resources, such as videos,
websites, and reports, to get a basic idea of what I would be working with. Later I would go to my
primary sources, teachers, artists, museums, and so on, to get a better idea of what I should use and do.
Evidence Nr 1 Vatican Museum, School of Athens by Raffaello. I would ask my
aunt for advice on whatever she had experience with and would spam question her
when I ran into a problem or needed some help as most of these techniques were new
to me. Developing a series of artworks with a common theme allowed me to explore a
concept in depth and refine specific techniques, being more familiar with art history to
understand different art movements and art styles. Because these techniques were new
to me I also had to go to the art store in Brera, to buy new materials. There they would
inform me briefly about the history, simple steps to follow, and things to be aware of
when using certain material, these tips gave me a good head start. And lastly, most of
the time when creating these art pieces I would do it with my art teacher who is also
my supervisor, Ms. Ravenhall. She would guide me through the process and let me
learn on my own, giving me some freedom and pushing me to figure things out
myself. I also had to apply my research skills when doing the research for the first two
sections of each chapter, so I learned about the life and achievements of the chosen
artist.

10
I used my analyzing skills a lot. Research using resources is not enough. Each artist has his
adaptation of a technique and their approach to it that makes things easier for them. Also, no website can
analyze and conceptualize art the same way an artist does, because in the end art is conceptual there is no
right or wrong, depending on which point of view we will analyze the concept. Analyzing the art myself
through my own eyes, I gained a deeper understanding of the techniques employed, this
helped me to refine a perfect way for my replication. When going to the museums I
would analyze everything in sight, even take pictures of important details to remember or
practice them to help with replication. When I went to the Vatican Museum, except for
having a very good tour guide who explained a lot of things to us, I would also take an
infinite amount of pictures. I would get as close up to paintings so I could analyze the
technique and look at the competition. The faces and anatomy, the colors, the shading
and lighting, the textures and media, all contribute to the intricate elements of artistic
expression. As I said earlier, my belief in the effectiveness of learning through hands-on
experience was reaffirmed when I visited the Sistine Chapel. Equipped with my
sketchbook, I hostility drew two different figures with a limited time of 20 minutes to
stay. Despite the rough sketches, this practical exercise significantly enhanced my
understanding of Michelangelo Renaissant era anatomy, posing, and shading techniques.
This serves as a second piece of evidence supporting the idea that actively engaging in
the artistic process contributes to deeper comprehension. Evidence Nr 2

Lastly, for time management I followed my Gantt chart as best I could and tried to organize my
work. During lunch time and after school I would use the art room to work on my pieces, and I would
have sessions of working on my personal project. Unfortunately, I couldn’t reach my deadlines for each
criterion, but I am following my own pace which will have promising results. I always remembered to
take pictures of my process, and I took advice from my supervisor and other teachers as well, I have
visited the PP clinic two to three times.

- Criterion C - Reflecting

My Final Product - Summary

My final product is a booklet. The booklet talks about the 14th-15th century, mainly the
Renaissance, but also includes artists from the golden period in the Netherlands, and a Byzantine artist.
Therefore I decided to name the book “Century Old Artists (XIV - XVI)”. As this is a booklet about art,
obviously it has many visual elements. I tried to make the book as simple, and straightforward, as I could
so it could be very understandable, but yet the descriptions are detailed so you can learn something. The
chapters are divided based on each artist. Every artist has 3 pages (6 including the images). The first page
has a biography of the chosen artist, talking about their accomplishments, education, skills, masterpieces,
relations, and general history. The second page is a painting analysis involving mysteries, easter eggs,
hidden details, and maybe some conspiracy theories, as well as the history behind it. Lastly, on the third
page, I have recreated a piece of the artist showing hands. I decided to draw hands for each artist to
compare and contrast with the other ones. Hands are a great way to do this, and the anatomy of hands is
drawn differently from every artist, but it’s easier to compare hands as they have supposably the same
features, unlike the face. The booklet also contains a prologue and an epilogue, has clear chapters, and the
cover, I designed myself. In the end, I did have to edit and remove 2 artists, but it was necessary for the
time crunch.

Impact of Personal Project

This Personal Project has impacted me a lot. I developed more interest in art, I also got to
improve my art technique. I learned different media such as affresco, and got to experiment in different
ways. The best part was the research. As I chose to mainly gather information through primary recourses I
got introduced to so many new experiences. For example, going to the Vatican Museum, or Rome in
general, also sketching until finding the right technique, asking artists, and shopping for supplies in Brera,
each part was amazing and so much fun and eye-opening. Most importantly, I managed to get a job offer
for my product. It was unplanned, I was working with an archaeologist from Albania for the ONufri part
of the book, and an Albanian artist from the Bizantin area. I wasn’t aware but that archaeologist was also
the head of the UNESCO university, and she recommended me, using my product, for a job in repairing
and touching up Byzantine churches in Albania during the summer.

Aesthetic 9 My Booklet is as aesthetically pleasing as I wanted it to be. The layout is very clear and the same for each chapter, it has many visual
aspects and clearly divided for each chapter. I decided not to annotate the main piece that I recreated on an iPad as I didn’t want it to
distract from my work, but I either annotated the original work or the pencil sketch version I made. The only bad thing that might need
some improvement is that the writing might be a bit too small.

Cost This book I would like to sell for 10 euro a copy. (prediction)

Making the book won't cost me too much I assume. I am going to make it online, but what will cost me are the materials I will need to buy
to make the different artworks; red chalk, oil paint fresca, tempra, etc. As well as scanning the artwork (45 euros), printing, a hard copy (2
euro), and probably making a pdf.

Some of these materials I have easy access to or I can find them at cheaper prices depending on where I buy them.

Customer 10 As i expected I reached my target audience, and exceeded. I managed to get a job from UNICEF by sparking an itntrest of an archeologist,
an historian. My product also seems to attract more towards artists and historians than others. Nonetheless, my art skills also managed to
impress and peak interes to others outside this field, and I hope it can help students for studies related to this topic.

Function 8.5 The booklet is be able to inform people whilst also being aesthetically pleasing. People are interested in the book, and can interact with it
by copying and learning from the drawings by following the process. The information is clear, and simple, but still has some artistic
vocabulary. Lastly, the booklet is reliable and trustworthy.

The chapters for each artist are very organized, for example, the western-European artists, the eastern-European artists, and the golden age
artists. This way the customer can work on whichever section they want with ease.

Lastly, the book itself is medium to small size so it’s practical. There is an online version for practicality as well that has zoom-in settings.

Material 9.5 Finding the online supplies and the paper to print was quit easy and not a challenge at all, on the other hand finding the materials to make
the artwork is a different story on its own. I mainly went to an art store in Brera, or used the supplies I had in the art room, but I had
difficulty with some, for example the golden flakes. In the end I had all the supplies, tried my best to replicate the older techniques, and
managed to creat an accurate product.

Overall I got a pretty high score of 37/40, which is very

good in my opinion. The only way I would improve on my
overall product is by adding more to it, making it a book
instead of a booklet, but considering the time crunch I had
to improvise. I would have to improve more on the process,
my time management mainly, I didn’t reach all my goals
concerning time management, but in the end, I made it with
flying colors, or so I believe.

To analyse or critisize on my success criteria and goal

achievements I used a SWOT analysis. A SWOT analysis is
a unique method of determining the strengths and
weaknesses of your product to then be able to outline
possible improvements that could be applied. Then to finish
you look at possible threats that could have made the
process of building the product more difficult.
