GAUHATI UNIVERSITY 8th SEMESTER B.E.

(Civil) EXAMINATION 2016

Confidential
Symbol :CE- 814
No. of Copies to Print ---------

Full Marks: 100

Pass marks: 35
Time: 4 Hours
Subject: Design of Substructures (ELECTIVE III)
Paper: Theory
Use of Design Aid to IS 456- 1978, IS: 456- 2000, IS:1893-2002 , IS:1893-1984 and IS:13920-1997 allowed

The Figures in the margin indicates full marks for the questions.

Answer any four questions

Question (a) Write the steps for proportioning footings of a building for equal amount 10
No. 1 of settlement.

(b) What precautions are to be taken while placing footings- 5X3=15

(i) Near hill slope in soil and in rock.

(ii) Newly constructed footing adjacent to a previously constructed

footing, but at different levels.

(iii) On expansive soils.

Explain your answers with sketches.

Question Design an isolated footing for a column 300mmX500mm in size, carrying an 25

No. 2. axial load of 500kN and a moment of 45 kN-m about its shorter side. A Plate
Load Test carried out at the proposed founding level at the site indicated a safe
bearing pressure of 135 kN/m2 for the footing. Draw a neat sketch showing the
reinforcement and other details of the footing.

Question Design a combined footing for two columns of size 400mmX400mm each, 25
No. 3. carrying loads of 500 kN and 350 kN and spaced at a C/C distance of 3.0m.
Allowable bearing pressure for the soil for a 2.0m wide footing at the proposed
foundation level is given as 100 kN/m2.

Question A building consists of 12 columns 350mmX350mm each, arranged in 3 rows of 25

No. 4 4 each. The centre-to centre distance between two adjacent columns is 6.0m
each. The vertical load carried by the corner columns is 500 kN each, that
carried by other exterior columns is 600 kN each and all other interior columns

carry a vertical load of 800 kN each. Secondary beams are placed suitably
within the raft to reduce the thickness of the raft slab. Proportion the raft and
design one primary beam in the shorter direction of the raft.

Question A 15 pile group arranged in 3 rows of 5 each for a column 300mm X 600mm in size 25
No. 5. is to be designed. Vertical load on the column is 750 kN with a moment of 80 kN-m
about the shorter side and 55 kN-m about the longer side of the column. The piles
are 400mm diameter and for design purpose their effective length may be assumed
as 7.0m. Find the load in each pile and design the most heavily loaded pile in the
pile group.

Question Design a pile cap for a column subjected to a vertical axial load of 500 kN. The 25
No. 6. safe load capacity of 300mm uniform shaft pile, 8.0m long is given as 170 kN.

Question Design the toe slab of an R.C.C. retaining wall, to retain dry granular material 25
No. 7. up to a height of 5.0m. The backfill material has an angle of internal friction of
40° without any surcharge and a dry unit weight of 16.5 kN/m3. Safe bearing
capacity at the founding of 1.0m is given as 150kN/m2. As a simplification in
the design, assume that the passive and active earth pressure below the
ground level nullifies each other.
