Tutorial 5

1. List FIVE standards for WPAN.

a. Bluetooth
b. Zigbee
c. TinyOS
d. nanonet
e. Wi-Fi

2. Discuss key differences between WPAN and WLAN

a. Coverage
i. WLAN technologies (≤ 100m) provide longer range than WPAN technologies (≤
10m)
b. Data Rates
i. WPAN has lower data rates than WLAN. The peak data rate of Bluetooth is 1-2
Mbps vs. 54Mbps for 802.11b
c. Power consumption
i. WPAN technologies look for low-cost, low-power solutions while WLAN looks
for Speed
d. Life Span
i. WPAN networks cannot exist without a master vs. WLAN which exists
independently (can support peer-to-peer)

3. Illustrate and explain the Bluetooth protocol stack.

a. Low Layer Protocols
i. Bluetooth Radio
1. Specifies details of air interface including frequency, frequency hopping,
modulation scheme and transmit power
ii. Baseband
1. Supports the physical RF (Radio Frequency) link between Bluetooth
devices
2. Concerned with connection establishment within a piconet, addressing,
packet format, timing and power control
iii. Link Manager Protocol (LMP)
1. Responsible for link setup between Bluetooth devices and ongoing link
management including security aspects like encryption and
authentication.
2. Control and Negotiation of baseband packet sizes.

iv. Host Controller Interface(HCI)

1. Interface which allows access to physical hardware status and
capabilities

4. Name two information that a master node gives to slave node in order to form a
piconet.
a. Clock ID
b. Device ID

5. Elaborate the addressing for active device, parked device and standby device in a
piconet.
a. Active devices are assigned a 3-bit active member address (AMA)
b. Parked devices are assigned an 8-bit parked member address (PMA)
c. Standby devices do not need an address

6. Summarize the Bluetooth version with their data rate.

7. List FOUR operational states of Bluetooth.

a. Master State
b. Slave State
c. Parked State
d. Standby State
