Certificate in Building Information

Modelling (BIM)
ISO 19650
Slide 03
ISO 19650 is an international standard defining the concepts and principles of
information management using building information modelling. There are two parts
to the standard; part 1 Concepts and principles, part 2 Delivery phase of assets.

Slide 04
ISO 19650 is a development of the British suite of PAS 1192 and BS 1192
standards. As with any ISO standard development this standard has been a joint
piece of work with multiple countries.

Slide 05
The construction industry has seen the adoption of BIM generally utilising the
recognised British standards. This has placed Britain at the forefront of BIM
adoption. As BIM has been taken up by more countries it was recognised that the
British standards are not always applicable for the country they are being used. The
development of ISO 19650 has brought together many countries to create the
standard. The use of this standard will promote a consistent delivery of BIM enabled
projects and open up opportunities for project engagement which previously didn’t
exist.

Slide 06
ISO 19650 standards and associated transition guidance can be purchased via the
links provided. The British standards that ISO 19650 replaces were free to access.
The reason for this was that the British Government sponsored the development of
the standards to promote adoption. This objective has been achieved and the
provision of the ISO 19650 standard now follows the purchasing process of other
ISO standards. When purchasing part 1 or part 2 the transition guidance is provided.
The transition guidance can also be purchased separately.

Slide 07
As quite often happens as ISO standards are developed the relevant British
standards that influenced ISO 19650 have now been removed from publication.

Slide 08
There are a number of other British standards which contribute to defining BIM.
These existing standards are still applicable and should continue to be referenced in
documents such as the Exchange Information Requirements document. For clarity
the Exchange Information Requirements document was previously called the
Employers Information Requirements.

Slide 09
This document is primarily intended for use by:

Those involved in the procurement, design, construction and/or commissioning of

built assets; and those involved in delivering asset management activities, including
operations and maintenance. ISO 19650 Part 1 is applicable to built assets and
construction projects of all sizes and all levels of complexity.

Slide 10
Collaboration between the participants involved in construction projects and in asset
management is pivotal to the efficient delivery and operation of assets.
Organizations are increasingly working in new collaborative environments to achieve
higher levels of quality and greater re-use of existing knowledge and experience. A
significant outcome of these collaborative environments is the potential to
communicate, re-use and share information efficiently, and to reduce the risk of loss,
contradiction or misinterpretation.

Slide 11
This document is designed to enable an appointing party to establish their
requirements for information during the delivery phase of assets and to provide the
right commercial and collaborative environment in which multiple appointed parties
can produce information in an effective and efficient manner.

Slide 12
ISO 19650 can be applied to assets of all types and sizes of organizations,
regardless of the chosen procurement strategy. This includes large estates,
infrastructure networks, individual buildings and pieces of infrastructure, and the
projects or programmes that deliver them.

Slide 13
Where people are familiar with BS 1192 and PAS 1192 part 2 there has been a
transition guidance developed to ease the use of the new standard.

Slide 14
An area where the international use of the British standards raised concerns where
specific terms. Through international negotiation key terminology utilised in the
British standards has been updated to internationally acceptable terms.

A National Annex has been developed by the UK. The purpose of the annex is to
clarify the implementation of ISO 19650 within the country of origin. An example
from the UK National Annex is the application of the unique ID for information
containers. ISO 19650 discusses the requirement of information containers where
the unique ID comprises of fields which are separated by a delimiter. The UK
National Annex provides the detail required to define the information container ID.
Where a country has not developed a National Annex agreement at a project level
could implement the use of another countries Annex. Currently only the UK has
developed a National Annex.

Slide 16
With the publication of ISO 19650 we are now in a time of transition. There will be
existing projects which are utilising the withdrawn British standards as well as new
projects utilising the British standards. For those projects progressing based upon
the withdrawn British standards it is acceptable to continue with these projects
without any update to the BIM documents. Where a project has started and is in the
early stages an update to the documentation may be applicable. The update could
be quite light touch simply adding a terminology mapping table as previously
demonstrated in these slides. This mapping table will clarify terminology used in the
BIM documents map to ISO 19650.

There are a number of articles emerging relating to ISO 19650. The links provided
are a selection of these articles.
