1.4 FOUNDATION DESIGN

A. Size of square footing
Design forces:
The governing combinations is 1.2DL + 1.6LL, thus from the result of the structural analysis:
Dead = 349.73 KN
Live = 35.03 KN
Pservice = 384.76KN (from STAAD)
Assumed unit weight of soil and foundation = 20Kn/m3
Assume soil bearing capacity = 120.19Kpa
Depth of footing = 1.5m
Size of Column = 0.25 x 0.4 (b x d)
Diameter of main reinforcement = 16mm
𝑞𝑛𝑒𝑡=120.19−20(1.5)= 90.19 𝐾𝑝𝑎
90.19 Kpa (𝐵²)=384.76
B² = 384.76 / 90.19
B² = 4.266 m²
B= 2.065 m
Thus, use 2.10 m X 2.10 m square footing.

DESIGN OF SLAB (Roof Deck)

t = 125mm 𝑊𝑢 =9.2548 𝑘𝑃𝑎
Consider 1 – m strip: 𝑊𝑢 =9.2548 (1𝑚)=9.2548𝑘𝑁𝑚
Maximum Moments:
+ M = 𝑊𝑢 (𝑙𝑢²)/14 = 9.2548(2.8)²/14 = 5.18 kN m
- M = 𝑊𝑢 𝑙𝑢²/10 = 9.2548(2.8)²/10 = 7.26 kN m
Steel Areas for flexure:
For negative moments:
𝑀𝑢 = ∅𝐴𝑠𝑓𝑦 (𝑑−0.5𝐴𝑠𝑓𝑦0.85𝑓 𝑐𝑏)
7.26𝑥106 = 0.9𝐴𝑠(276)(99−0.5𝐴𝑠(276)0.85(21)(1000))
Solving for 𝐴𝑠,
𝐴𝑠=302.36 𝑚𝑚2
Check: 𝐴𝑠𝑚𝑖𝑛= 1.4/276(1000)(99)=502.17 𝑚𝑚2
Therefore: Use 𝐴𝑠=502.17 𝑚𝑚2
𝑆/𝜋4(12)²=1000/502.17
S = 225.22 mm, take conservatively as 200mm

For positive moment:

𝑀𝑢 = ∅𝐴𝑠𝑓𝑦 (𝑑−((0.5𝐴𝑠𝑓𝑦)/0.85𝑓 𝑐𝑏)
5.18 𝑥 10^6 = 0.9(𝐴𝑠)(276) (99−0.5𝐴𝑠(276)/((0.85(21)(1000)))
𝐴𝑠=214.22 𝑚𝑚2
Check: 𝐴𝑠𝑚𝑖𝑛= 1.4276(1000)(99)=502.17 𝑚𝑚2
Therefore: Use 𝐴𝑠=502.17 𝑚𝑚2
𝑆𝜋4(12)2=1000/502.17
S = 225.22 mm, take conservatively as 200mm
The code provides temperature bars in the longitudinal directions.
The area of the temperature bars needed is given by 𝜌=0.002 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑓𝑦=276 𝑀𝑃𝑎.
Temperature Bars:
For fy = 276MPa, 𝜌=0.002
Thus,
𝐴𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑝=0.002(2800)(99)=554.4𝑚𝑚2
𝑁10𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑝=554.4/(𝜋4(10)²)=7.05 𝑠𝑎𝑦 8 𝑝𝑐𝑠
These temperature bars shall be provided at the bottom of the slab for positive moments and at the top for negative moments.

Solving for 𝐴𝑠,
𝐴𝑠=302.36 𝑚𝑚2
Check: 𝐴𝑠𝑚𝑖𝑛= 1.4/276(1000)(99)=502.17 𝑚𝑚2
Therefore: Use 𝐴𝑠=502.17 𝑚𝑚2
𝑆/𝜋4(12)²=1000/502.17
S = 225.22 mm, take conservatively as 200mm

For positive moment:

B. Design of footing
I. Design of thickness
𝑃𝑢 = 1.2𝐷 + 1.6𝐿 = 475.73
𝑞𝑢 = 𝑃𝑢 / 𝐵²
𝑞𝑢 = 475.73 / (2.065)²
𝑞𝑢 = 111.56 Kpa

Check for wide beam shear:

𝑉𝑢 = 111.56 ((2.10/2) - (0.25/2) - (d/1000))(2.10)(1000)
𝑉𝑢 =( 0.85 (Sqrt(21))(2100)d)/6
𝑉𝑢 =( 0.85 (Sqrt(21))(2100)d)/6
𝑉𝑢 =(( 8179.89)d)/6
(6) 𝑉𝑢 =(( 8179.89)d)
167045.20 = (8179.89/6) d
Solving for d, we get :
d = 167045.2 / 1363.315
d = 122.53 mm

Check from punching shear:

𝑉𝑢 = 𝑃𝑢 − 𝑞𝑢 (𝑐1 + 𝑑)( 𝑐2 + 𝑑)
475.73 – 111.56(.25 +d/1000) (0.40 + d/1000) = d / 3000 (sqrt(21))(1500+ d)
Solving for d, we get:
d = 167.86 mm
Thus, use d = 145.48 mm, the thickness of the footing is:
t = d + concrete cover + 1.5d = 167.86 + 75 + 1.5(16) = 266.86 mm
▪ Use 𝒕𝒇𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 = 𝟐70 𝒎𝒎
II. Design of Flexure:
Main bar diameter to be used: 16mm
Effective Depth, d = 270 -75 -1.5(16) = 171mm
𝑀𝑢 =𝑞𝑢 (𝐿−𝑐)2(𝐵)(𝐿−𝑐4)
𝑀𝑢 =111.56 (2.10−.25)2(2.10)(2.10−.254)
𝑀𝑢 =79.27𝑘𝑁.𝑚
79.27(1x10^6)=0.9𝐴𝑠 (414)(171−0.5𝐴𝑠 (414)/0.85(21)(2100))
𝐴𝑠 =2667.07𝑚𝑚2
Check:
𝐴𝑠𝑚𝑖𝑛 =(1.4/𝑓𝑦) 𝑏𝑑= (1.4/414)(2100)(171)= 1378.70𝑚𝑚2
Use 𝐴𝑠 =2667.07 𝑚𝑚2
Thus, total number of bars bothways,
𝑁=𝐴𝑠 / 𝐴𝑏𝑎𝑟 =2667.07 / 𝜋4(16)2 = 13.26 pcs
▪ Use 14 pcs. 16-mm diameter bar Grade 60 (fy = 414MPa) bothways
