J.F. Kennedy and democracy
Democratic Nomination
Kennedy, a Massachusetts senator, announced his
presidential bid in 1960 after finishing second in the
1956 Democratic vice-presidential ballot.
He faced challenges from Hubert Humphrey and
others but secured the Democratic nomination and
chose Lyndon B. Johnson as his running mate.
-Kennedy narrowly won the election, becoming the youngest and first Roman Catholic
president, while the Democrats maintained majorities in Congress.
The Watergate
affair
The Watergate scandal involved the Nixon administration's attempt to cover up its involvement in the
break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in 1972. Investigations revealed Nixon's
approval of the cover-up and the existence of a taping system in the Oval Office.
Despite resistance from the administration, televised Senate hearings gained public attention.
Nixon's efforts to obstruct the investigation led to impeachment proceedings, and the Supreme Court
compelled him to surrender tapes implicating him in the cover-up.
Facing impeachment, Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974, becoming the only U.S. president to do so.
The scandal resulted in numerous indictments and convictions, and the term "Watergate" has become
synonymous with political scandals.
