8. Let U = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15} be the universal set and
the sets A, B and C be given by {x : 2x + 15 = 11 + 3x, x ∈ R},
{x : x ≥ 10, x ∈ U } and {1, 3, 12, 14, 15} respectively.

9. A company which has five regular customers, stocks products r, st, u, v, w, x


and y. Customer A buys products r, s, t and v, customer B buys products
r, t, v, w and x, customer C buys products r, t and x, customer D buys
products r, v and w and finally customer E buys products r, v, w and x.
Represent the products bought by the five customers as sets and specify
the elements of each of the following sets, giving its meaning in words.

(a) A universal set, U , for A, B, C, D and E.

10. There are 100 students in year two accounting class. 75 of them passed
Mathematical Analysis while 40 passed in Communication Skills. If 20
students were repeaters and therefore did not sit for these two courses,
how many students passed in both subjects?

11. A survey was carried out by government through ministry of labor, one of
the aims being to discover to what extent minimum wage was being imple-
mented by firms on the copperbelt. 32 firms had employees getting below
and above the minimum wage, 65 firms had just one of these attributes
and 90 firms paid its employees above the minimum wage. If 22 firms did
not give out full information, how many firms were included in the survey?

12. Some stock items at a production plant may be classified into one or more
of three categories: P , for perishable items; S, for special orders and E,
for export but 24 items are not classified. 6 items were classified only as P ,
8 were E only and 4 were S only.Exactly 7 items were classified into just
two special categories and no items were classified into all three. Given
also that there were 14 export items and 9 spacial order items, find:

(a) how many items were classified as perishable, and


(b) how many different stock items were held.

13. School of Business got 130 applications, after evaluation, seven students
were found unqualified and their applications were rejected. The school
administration admitted students who qualified as follows:-

51 Students registered for BEC
19 Students registered for both BSP and HRM
20 Students registered for both BSP and BEC
11 Students registered for both HRM and BEC
9 Students were not admitted in any of the three stated units
Determine the number of students

(e) not Registered for either HRM or BEC.

14. For small businesses to be funded, they must supply any of the three
substances A, B and C. Ministry of finance surveyed 450 small businesses
in Kitwe and produced the table below.

(a) Draw a Venn diagram to represent this information.

15. A company manufactured 325 cars with automatic transmission, 216 with
power steering, and 89 with both options. How many cars were manufac-
tured if every car has at least one option?

16. Suppose that out of 1500 first-year students at a certain college, 350 are
taking history, 300 are taking mathematics, and 270 are taking both history
and mathematics. How many first-year students are taking history or
mathematics?

17. Of the cars sold during the month of July, 2021, ninety had air conditioning,
one hundred had automatic transmissions, and seventy five had power
steering. Five cars had all three of these extras. Twenty cars had none of
these extras. Twenty cars had only air conditioning, sixty cars had only
automatic transmissions, and thirty cars had only power steering. Ten cars
had both automatic transmission and power steering.

(a) How many cars had both power steering and air conditioning?
