INTRODUCTION OF PROJECT
 Name of the Project: Proposed Multi-storeys Classrooms and Laboratories buildings
Financier: United Republic of Tanzania and African Development Fund
Client: Ministry of Education Science and Technology
Architect: Sky Architect Consultancy
Turnkey Architect Limited
Structural Engineer: R.H. Engineering Consultant Limited

 Area of the Building
The building covered an area of about 54 m x 28.5 m (1512m2)
 Purpose of the project
The purpose of this project is to provide service for both students and teachers after its
completion
 Project duration
The project duration is eleven (11) months arranged from 19/04/2018 to 19/03/2019
 Project cost
The cost of the project is 6.8 billion

2. PROJECT ACTIVITIES OVERVIEW

 Type of structure
The type of structure is framed structure
A Frame structure is a structure having the combination of beam, column and slab to resist the
lateral and gravity loads. Therefore, with framed structure its weight is carried by a skeleton or
framework, as opposed to being supported by walls. The essential factor in a framed building is
the frame’s strength.

 Type of foundation
Two types of foundation exist, both Pad foundation (Isolated and Combined foundation) and
Strip foundation
Pad foundation
Foundations which carry and spread concentrated loads to the soil from superstructures are
called pad foundation. The pads are usually placed at a shallow depth, but they can also be used
as deep foundation depending on the loads to be transferred and condition of the subsoil.
For the visited site, pad foundation of size 2700mm x 2700mm with overall depth of 3m was
constructed. And also where the two pad are spaced closely they provided combine footing.
Strip foundations (or strip footings)
These are the type of foundation which are used to provide a continuous, level (or sometimes
stepped) strip of support to a linear structure such as a wall or closely-spaced rows of columns
built centrally above them. A strip footing is also known as continuous footing.
 Services available
Building services are the systems installed in buildings to make them comfortable, functional,
efficient and safe

Electrical service.
Electricity has been part of our lives. Electricity powers our light, heating, electronic appliances
such as computers and television, and a host of essential services that we take for granted.

Plumbing.
Plumbing refers to any system that allows the movement of fluids, typically involving pipes,
valves, plumbing fixtures, tanks and other apparatus. It is a system of pipes and fixtures installed
in a building for the distribution and use of potable (drinkable) water and the removal of
waterborne wastes. The building after its completion is assured of this service.

Lift.
A lift (or elevator) is a form of vertical transportation between building floors, levels or decks,
commonly used in offices, public buildings and other types of multi-storey building.
The lift at the building under consideration is designed to be able to carry the people not more
than eleven (11) in number whose total weight is approximated not to exceed 825kg. Its concrete
grade is 25 with mixing ratio of 1:1.5:3

 Methods of Project planning

The method of project planning used is the Program of work.
Program of work describes the sequence in tasks must be carried out so that project (or part of
the project) can be completed on time. Programmes will often identify: dates and durations
allocated to tasks

 Site layout
 Schedule of materials
The inquiry of materials from the suppliers depends on the activity on progress.
 Procurement of materials without delay
The procurement of materials depends on the activity on progress.

3. SAFETY MEASURES
 Protective gears are gum boots, safety boots, helmets, reflectors, First Aid Kit and safety belts.
 Warning tapes
 Fence
4. ACTIVITIES ON PROGRESS
The activities that were on progress are:
 Steel fixing for ground ring beam
 Concrete mixing and column casting
 Form working
 Construction of foundation wall (plinth wall)

5. CHALLENGES
The following were challenges observed and notified at the site:
 Rainfall: It led to delay of activities because in some days activities had to stop due to continuous
raining and ponding of water in the excavated trenches.
 Extra cost: Due to delay of activities the number of working days increase which lead to extra
cost in terms of funds and time.
 Delaying of materials supply due to adverse weather condition like rainfall eg. supply of sand
 Small (limited) area of the site which hinders the Contractor to store all construction materials at
the site, instead inquiry of materials is done on activities on progress.
 Reinforcement steels are imported from other countries while steel industries are available in
Tanzania as the result the cost of construction tends to be high.

6. RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSION

CONCLUSION
All in all, the above is the report which briefly describes the study visit conducted on 31 st May
2018 at the Proposed Multi-storeys Classrooms and Laboratories buildings project for Arusha
Technical College. The trip made has enabled us to transform the knowledge and skills learnt in
classrooms during class sessions, thus improving the capabilities of understanding. After
completion of this project both students and Lecturers will be in a better position of getting the
services intended for the building.

RECOMMENDATION
The following are the recommendations:
 Reinforcement steels should not be imported from other countries instead home
reinforcement steels should be used in construction. This will reduce the cost of
construction.
 The college must provide the Contractor with extra area within the college for storage of
construction materials
